One in five applicants to white supremacist group tied to US military

One in five applicants to the white supremacist group Patriot Front claimed to hold current or former ties to the US military, according to leaked documents published and reviewed by the Southern Poverty Law Center and alternative media collective Unicorn Riot.

Some 18 out of the 87 applicants, or 21%, said they were currently or previously affiliated with the military. One applicant, who claimed to be a former Marine, also said he currently worked for the Department of Homeland Security, according to the SPLC’s Hatewatch, a blog that tracks and exposes activities of American rightwing extremists.

A white supremacist and neo-fascist hate group, Patriot Front emerged as a rebrand of the neo-Nazi organization Vanguard America in the aftermath of the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

According to the SPLC, the Patriot Front “represents one of the most prominent white supremacist groups in the country” and is led by Thomas Rousseau, a 23-year old man based in Dallas, Texas. “A nation within a nation is our goal. Our people face complete annihilation as our culture and heritage are attacked from all sides,” Rousseau once said.

Fire company in Delaware County suspended after racist remarks caught on video call

Briarcliffe Fire Company Station 75 is silent. No firetrucks and no firefighters are moving inside or outside.

It comes after the fire company was temporarily shut down following allegations of racist remarks by firefighters who thought their video call conversation was private.

The original call was to discuss the consolidation of services between the Briarcliffe, Goodwill, and Darby fire companies.

When county and state officials got off the call, members of the Briarcliffe Fire Company allegedly stayed on and engaged in a discussion that included racial slurs and disparaging remarks about African Americans in the area.

"A bunch of f---ing n--- down there," one man can be heard saying while discussing the all-Black Darby Township Fire Company. There were also comments about Darby's chief.

"He's just a piece of s___," one person said.

There were other disparaging comments about Black firefighters being lazy.

"They didn't do s___ there," one person said of Darby firefighters.

There was also a discussion of there being too many Black people in the area.

"That's the f---ing problem," one person said. "Blacks are taking over s---."

Eichelman and his fellow firefighters knew he had to bring the comments to light.

That included sharing comments on the call that made fun of Fanta Bility. She is the 8-year-old girl killed by police gunfire.

"Fanta soda, yeah, orange or Fanta grape," one man said on the call while chuckling, even after being told that the girl was shot to death by police.

Fayetteville native: Attempt to change a tire leads to harrowing confrontation, gun shot

This Saturday was different. I woke up, again.

I had it all planned out. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Drop daughter off at Girl Talk. Meet with men’s group to work on community initiative. Buy supplies for winter storm. Prioritize the honey-do list. Check in with my son who was at a sleepover. A well-set plan.

It all changed with one call from my son.

“Dad, my tire just popped!”

I immediately sprang into action. My son needed me. My son, like many teenagers, has it all figured out, he believes. But we have not had the flat-tire scenario yet. It was time to have a teachable father-son moment.

“I will be right there,” I told him.

When I arrived, the car was leaning on the side of the road, definitely not the place to repair a tire. We needed to get it to flat ground. It was a fairly busy street with houses spread along the road here and there. My son slowly drove it to the first patch of land that was flat. To drive any further would mean much more damage to the car.

I wanted my son to do it all himself. Park on a flat surface. Remove the tools from the trunk. Set up the jack. Use the lug wrench. Put the doughnut tire on the car. He was doing it and I was proud of him. The car started to rise from the turns of the jack.

Then I woke up, again.

We thought we were in a common area of grass along the road, but as it turns out it belonged to someone who did not look like us. Uh oh. I could see the man from the distance come out of his home. I thought he was going to check to see if everything was okay.

Instead he began to shout foul language to get off his property. I quickly responded and apologized and stated that my son had a flat tire and we were fixing as quickly as possible. To this he responded with even more foul language. He seemed to get more agitated and continued to scream as we lowered the car to move it further down the street.

Then it happened. A gun shot. Up in the air.

I guess he wanted us to move faster. I told my son to jump into my car and drive down the street, park and I would call him when I found a different location.

The man, now joined by a lady, continued to yell obscenities and racial slurs from the porch with gun in hand. I continued to say that I was sorry while tossing things in the trunk, hoping not to lose anything including my life. I was both afraid, angry, confused and sad at the same time.

This was supposed to be a lesson in how to change your first flat tire. Instead, it turned into a lesson about being a Black man. This was a reminder that there are some people who are just filled with hate and evil. This man was one of them.

Commentary: Boebert's 'bad hair bill' comment is exactly why the CROWN Act is needed in the first place

Your voice is your power. Your words are powerful. We know this, right?

All week long, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado has made a point to show that she knows the power of her words as well.

But also this week, when providing a vote on the CROWN Act, a bill that would outlaw discrimination based on hair textures and hairstyles, she referred to it on the House of Representatives floor as "the bad hair bill."

When we reached out to Rep. Boebert’s press team for clarification on what she'd said, they said she meant to say, "It's a bad, hair bill."

They went on to add, "We can’t believe this is news, but here you are."

Yes, you’re right. Here we are.

That less than one-minute statement from Rep. Boebert, using those two words “bad hair” right after one another, opened a deep wound that is still evident in Black culture.

In a conversation of over 400-plus years, Black people keep being told their hair is subpar.

One thing about me: I deeply despise giving someone publicity when their rhetoric was clearly harmful to others, whether they’ll even acknowledge it. What’s sad, and the reason why I am addressing this statement, is that Rep. Boebert is not alone in her mindset.

When we followed up and asked her to explain what she thought was "bad" about the bill, we didn’t hear back.

The fact that she used that language and then walked away from the podium like it's nobody’s business is not OK. It is my business -- and the business of countless other Black men, women and children, whose hair has been used as a weapon against their character.

In fact, Rep. Boebert's comments are exactly the reason why the CROWN Act is needed in the first place. Because people who have a similar mindset may be leading our schools, may be the ones making the hiring or firing decisions at our places of employment or may even be those who determine whether you get a promotion.

Hair is a Black woman's crown and glory, but the history of our hair can be complicated for some to understand.

That history is rooted in racism. When Africans were stolen from their native countries and enslaved, their hair was among the initial things their oppressors targeted.

Travis and Gregory McMichael Fight to Appeal Federal Hate Crime Convictions in Ahmaud Arbery's Killing

A couple of weeks ago, all three of the killers involved in the 2020 death of Ahmaud Abrery were convicted of federal hate crimes. Now two of the killers, Travis McMichael and his father Greg McMichael are looking for an acquittal of their federal hate crimes convictions, according to CNN.

The father and son, who both filed separate motions for judgments of acquittal on all the federal charges, are arguing that the killing of the 25-year-old Black man did not happen on public streets and that the government did not give enough evidence for them to be convicted.

According to CNN, court records show that William R. Bryan, the third man convicted in the killing of Arbery, has not filed a motion since the federal hate crimes trial ended.

SPLC report: Hate groups in decline as views hit mainstream

The number of white nationalist, neo-Nazi and anti-government extremist groups across the U.S. fell for a third straight year in 2021, even as some groups were reinvigorated by the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol last year and by the ongoing culture wars over the pandemic and school curriculums.

In its annual report, released Wednesday, the Southern Poverty Law Center said it identified 733 active hate groups in 2021, down from the 838 counted in 2020 and the 940 counted in 2019. Hate groups had risen to a historic high of 1,021 in 2018, said the law center, which tracks racism, xenophobia and far right militias.

The number of anti-government groups fell to 488 in 2021, down from 566 in 2020 and 576 in 2019. Such groups peaked at 1,360 in 2012, the year former President Barack Obama was elected to a second term.

“Rather than demonstrating a decline in the power of the far right, the dropping numbers of organized hate and anti-government groups suggest that the extremist ideas that mobilize them now operate more openly in the political mainstream,” says the new report, shared with The Associated Press ahead of its release.

So you're saying that hate groups peaked while Trump was the President?  Hmmm....I wonder why that might be...

‘I’m a white civil rights activist’: Former KKK leader running for office in North Georgia

A former leader of the Ku Klux Klan – who also spent time in prison – is running for public office in North Georgia. Chester Doles says he’s a changed man.

In most cases, convicted felons cannot hold office in Georgia. So, how did Doles get on the ballot?

According to Georgia code, felons can hold elected office in Georgia if they get their civil rights restored and if at least 10 years have passed from the time they completed their sentence.

Doles was released from federal prison on firearms charges in 2007 – meaning that he has passed that 10 year threshold. Before that, he was sent to prison for beating a black man in Maryland.

As far as getting his civil rights restored, that’s the question CBS46 Investigates has been asking officials all day. The Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles don’t have a record of Doles getting his rights restored. Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners also don’t have documents related to Doles having his rights restored.

“This sick insane culture of wokeness is destroying America. These people want us gone. We American patriots are the new most endangered species,” 61-year-old Chester Doles said to a small crowd on the campaign trail.

Doles is running as a Republican for a seat on the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners. He carries signs that read “Stop Socialism. Save America.” It’s a slogan borrowed from Georgia’s controversial Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who Doles also supports.

“My main policy would be the guardian of the educational system of Lumpkin County, to keep out Critical Race Theory,” Doles said. “It’s Marxist. It’s trying to put a sense of white guilt into young white children. It needs to be abolished.”

When we asked Doles about his criminal record, he compared himself to civil rights activists.

“If you look at Hosea Williams, he was on the City Council, he was arrested 168 times. Congressman John Lewis, he was arrested 68 times, so that’s not a reason to disqualify someone,” Doles said. “Don’t matter if you’re out there for the civil rights movement, than I’m a white civil rights activist then.”

This is not the first time Doles is front and center. The former leader of the Ku Klux Klan is quoted and pictured in multiple newspaper clippings from the early 1990s. Today, he tells Polansky that he’s a changed man.

“Do you publicly denounce racism?” Polansky asked. “I do publicly denounce racism, yes ma’am,” Doles responded.

“Do you publicly denounce anti-Semitism?” Polansky asked. “Absolutely,” Doles said.

White Student at Louisiana Catholic School Accused of Hate Crime After Allegedly Throwing Cotton Balls at Black Student and Whipping Him With a Belt on Video

A 15-year-old in Louisiana has been charged with a hate crime after a social media video appeared to show him whipping and throwing cotton at a Black fellow student in a cafeteria, a local sheriff’s office has announced.

In the footage, which was shared on social media, the white student can be seen walking up behind the victim–who was sitting down at the time–and throwing a handful of cotton balls at him. The assailant then repeatedly strikes the Black student with his belt, according to New Orleans CBS affiliate WWL-TV. The recipient of the abuse eventually stands up, grabs his attacker, and pushes him away, backwards, and through a nearby door, according to People magazine.

The incident occurred on March 9, 2022 at the Vandebilt Catholic High School cafeteria in Houma, La.

According to the sheriff’s office, the white student, a high school freshman, was arrested on March 15, 2022 and charged with simple battery and a hate crime. He was subsequently booked into the Terrebonne Parish Juvenile Justice Center.

US House passes Crown Act which would end hair discrimination

A ban on race-based hair discrimination in the United States is a step closer after a vote in Congress.

The House of Representatives passed the legislation which seeks to end discrimination against natural hair at work and school.

The Crown (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act must still be approved by the Senate.

President Joe Biden has urged lawmakers to swiftly pass the law.

Black Americans say they are often treated unfairly at work and in schools because of their natural hair textures or protective styles like braids, knots, twists and locs.

If the Crown Act becomes law, natural hair discrimination would be treated as if it were race or national origin discrimination under federal civil rights law.

Until then, advocates say that employers and institutions can discriminate against black Americans based on how they style their natural hair.

Adjoa B Asamoah, legislative strategist for the CROWN Coalition, praised Friday's vote in the House, but acknowledged a potential uphill battle in the Senate.

Red Robin restaurant staff concealed semen in salad after Portland customer alleged racial discrimination, lawsuit claims

A Red Robin restaurant in Clackamas served a disgusting salad dressing to a man who expressed his ire that employees racially discriminated against his family, a new lawsuit claims.

The Portland resident — identified in court papers by only his initials, T.C. — consumed “a decent amount” of the garden salad before realizing human semen had been concealed inside the leafy greens, his attorney said.

The civil suit seeks $1 million in damages from Red Robin for sexual abuse, negligence and racial discrimination against the man, who is Black, according to the lawsuit filed Monday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

New Jersey Town Accused of Paying Off Cop to Bury Mayor’s Racial Slurs

A New Jersey town allegedly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to silence a whistleblower who came forward with secret recordings of local officials, including the mayor and police chief, using racial slurs.

But now, the whistleblower claims the city is holding back his retirement pension in retaliation.

According to NJ.com, Antonio Manata, a former police lieutenant, recorded several Clark Township officials using racial slurs and making derogatory statements, then threatened to file a lawsuit exposing them. But Clark officials ultimately decided to fork over $400,000 to Manata under an agreement that required the ex-cop to turn over his recordings.

In seven recordings obtained and published by NJ.com, Manata captured the mayor and two top police officials referring to Black people as “spooks,” “shines,” and “n—s.”

In one recording from 2019, Clark Township Mayor Sal Bonaccorso, a Republican serving his sixth term, was leaving a meeting at the Clark Recreation Center when an officer pointed out some ropes hanging from above and asked what they were.

“We [expletive] hang the spooks up there,” Bonaccorso responded as laughter filled the audio.

In another recorded conversation from 2019, Clark Police Chief Pedro Matos spoke about reopening a bias crimes investigation into the high school incident.

“I’m going to prove that them [expletive] n—-s did it,” Matos can be heard saying.

In another recording, Internal Affairs Sgt. Joseph Teston allegedly said a Black suspect’s mugshot reminded him of a National Geographic photo and said he had a “big [expletive] monkey head.”

Bonaccorso can be heard in another clip from 2019 asking about a Black man police officers were chasing.

“What spook are you guys chasing around in a red shirt?” he asked, repeatedly using the racial slur.

In a settlement with Manata in early 2020, Clark officials allegedly agreed to keep him on the police department’s payroll for two years—without working—until he could retire as captain. He was also paid a lump sum plus legal fees totaling $400,000. In exchange, Manata handed the recordings over to town officials and agreed not to file his draft lawsuit. The town also signed a document denying the allegations.

Six months after Manata settled with Clark Township, supervision at the police department changed. According to NJ.com, the Union County Prosecutor’s Office took over the department and found “credible allegations of misconduct.” Matos, Teston, and Cpt. Vincent Concina were immediately placed on leave during an investigation. But nearly two years later, all three officers are reportedly still on paid leave, raking in more than $763,000 through March 15.

Virginia GOP official resigns after he called for Pentagon chief to be lynched

The Republican chairman of a Virginia electoral board has stepped down after a racially charged Facebook post he made about Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and others came to light last week.

David Dietrich, the former chairman of the Electoral Board in Hampton, resigned Saturday — two days after his social media posting was discovered and prompted Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) and other GOP lawmakers to call for his removal.

In a post from February 2021, Dietrich targeted Austin and retired Army Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré — both Black men — in a post, using the N-word and calling for “a good public lynching.”

Wilder Man Charged After Pipe Bombs, 'White Power' Rifle Discovered

A man charged with making pipe bombs in his mother's house in Wilder owned Nazi paraphernalia and spoke about killing Black people and Democrats, federal prosecutors allege.

The U.S. Attorney's Office charged William Hillard, 51, on Thursday with illegally possessing an explosive device and a firearm. The federal complaint followed a raid of the house on Wednesday by local, state and federal authorities, during which they found a semiautomatic rifle adorned with "WHITE POWER" and skull stickers.

Hillard cannot legally possess firearms due to a 1997 felony conviction in New Hampshire for possessing an explosive device. Hillard told police that he amassed the weaponry to protect himself from "Antifa" or "other Democrat-affiliated extremist groups," in anticipation of "societal unrest," court papers state.

At a detention hearing on Friday, Magistrate Judge Kevin J. Doyle ordered Hillard held in prison pending trial. Hillard, through assistant federal defender Sara Puls, asked to remain at home with his mother. Puls said Hillard disputed allegations that he had made threats to anyone but was willing to undergo a mental health assessment.

Doyle urged him to do so. "I think at this point, there is a need for you to receive some type of mental health counseling," the judge said.

Earlier this month, according to an affidavit of federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives special agent Scott Murray, an informant provided Hartford police with a homemade explosive device he said he'd received from Hillard. The informant also reported seeing Hillard make larger bombs using explosive powders and shrapnel such as ball bearings and screws.

The informant further told authorities that Hillard was racist and had discussed overthrowing the government and killing his neighbors. The threats were becoming more frequent, the person reportedly said.

So racism doesn't exist if we never talk about it?

Florida Gov. DeSantis signs bill to limit discussion of race

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law new guidelines Friday involving race-based discussions in businesses and schools as part of his campaign against critical race theory, which he called “pernicious” ideology.

Passed by lawmakers earlier this year, the legislation bars instruction that says members of one race are inherently racist, and that they should feel guilt for past actions committed by others of the same race or that a person’s status as privileged or oppressed is necessarily determined by their race. It also bars the notion that meritocracy is racist, or that discrimination is acceptable to achieve diversity.

“We believe in education, not indoctrination,” DeSantis said during Friday's bill signing in South Florida.

DeSantis said Florida students will not have oppressive ideologies imposed on them, as the bill provides “substantive protections” for students in grades K to 12. He said “pernicious ideologies” will not be allowed.

“We will not use your tax dollars to teach our kids to hate this country or hate each other,” DeSantis said.

Opponents say DeSantis doesn’t have an accurate idea of what critical race theory is, and argue that his motives are to suppress an accurate account of Black history.

“It’s just illustrating Gov. DeSantis’ pattern of Black attack policies led by Republican legislators. He has taken a culture war to a classic Republican battleground, which is the public schools. It’s going to hurt our children’s futures,”' said Democratic Rep. Angie Nixon, who is Black. “CRT is not taught in K-12 education here in our public schools."
