Alleged leaker fixated on guns and envisioned ‘race war’

Jack Teixeira, dressed in camouflage fatigues, his finger wrapped around the trigger of a semiautomatic rifle, faced the camera and spoke as though reciting an oath.

“Jews scam, n----rs rape, and I mag dump.”

Teixeira raised his weapon, aimed at an unseen target and fired 10 times in rapid succession, emptying the magazine of bullets.

The six-second video, taken at a gun range near Teixeira’s home in Massachusetts, affords a brief but illuminating glimpse into the offline world of the 21-year-old National Guard member, who stands accused of leaking a trove of classified military intelligence on the group-chat platform Discord.

Previously unpublished videos and chat logs reviewed by The Washington Post, as well as interviews with several of Teixeira’s close friends, suggest that he was readying for what he imagined would be a violent struggle against a legion of perceived adversaries — including Blacks, political liberals, Jews, gay and transgender people — who would make life intolerable for the kind of person Teixeira professed to be: an Orthodox Christian, politically conservative and ready to defend, if not the government of the United States, a set of ideals on which he imagined it was founded.

“He did call himself racist, multiple times,” the friend said in an interview. “I would say he was proud of it.”

Marjorie Taylor Greene Makes Absurd Claim About ‘The N-Word’ Following Spat with Jamaal Bowman

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) claimed she felt “threatened” during her latest exchange with Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) outside of the Capitol on Wednesday and tore into critics who call her a white supremacist with a surprising comparison.

Greene spoke with reporters on Thursday, who asked about Bowman’s interaction with her, which ended with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) telling him that debating Greene “ain’t worth it.”

“What concerns me about Jamaal Bowman,” Greene said, “is he has a history of aggression. Not just towards others, but towards me in particular, and I’m very concerned about it.”

Greene accused Bowman of “leading a mob” against her last month since he was among those who heckled her when she was in New York City to denounce former President Donald Trump’s indictment. “My life was in danger,” Greene declared before complaining that Bowman called her a “white supremacist.” Bowman accused Greene in New York City in early April of “rhetoric that uplifts white supremacy.”

“I take great offense to [that],” she said. “That’s like calling a person of color the N-word, which should never happen. Calling me a white supremacist is equal to that, and that is wrong.”

Greene brought the subject back to her encounter with Bowman outside of the Capitol, saying he approached her and “his physical mannerisms are aggressive.”

“I think there’s a lot of concern about Jamaal Bowman, and I am concerned about it.” She continued. “I feel threatened by him…He’s someone people should watch.”

Bowman’s office released a statement about the incident which put it in historical context:

Quote

“This is why it is so important that we teach and know our history. There is a long tradition—that Marjorie should be well aware of—of Black men who are passionate, outspoken, or who stand their ground, being characterized as ‘threatening’ or ‘intimidating.’ That’s what happened with Emmett Till, with Mike Brown, and with so many more.

“Marjorie’s attack is beyond a dog-whistle. It’s a bull-horn. And it’s reckless and dangerous. She has put a target on my back.

“The truth of the matter is that we had a light back-and-forth on the steps of Capitol Hill, surrounded by reporters and staff. We can roll back the tapes and see her characterization of our conversation is an utter and blatant lie.

“This is, historically, what white supremacists do. They try to dehumanize Black people, Black skin, and Black humanity—so that we can be targeted for harm.”

What Year is this? In Mississippi The Fight For School Desegregation Continues

Over half a century after the landmark Supreme Court decision, Brown v. Board, one would hope that the term school segregation would be a vestige of the past. But in the heart of the deep South, the fight to end school segregation is far from a bygone era.

On Thursday, the Department of Justice told the Associated Press that there are currently 32 school districts in Mississippi under federal desegregation orders out of 144 school districts in total. If you’re not a legal scholar, or frankly, even if you are, you might be wondering what that means.

A desegregation order is a plan that has “that has been ordered or submitted into the federal or state court... that remedies or addresses a school district’s actual or alleged segregation of students or staff on the basis of race or national origin.” A school district remains under that plan until “the court, agency or other competent officials finds that the district has satisfied its obligations.”

So in case anyone was curious, it’s not a good sign to be under a desegregation order, and Mississippi is a pretty bad offender. In 2017, the Cleveland, Mississippi, school district was in the spotlight after years of litigation. The school board agreed to end their practice of having one white and one Black school after nearly 50 years of litigation from the DOJ and outside groups.

Florida woman charged with fatally shooting her neighbor has a history of harassing area children, residents say

A white woman charged with fatally shooting her Black neighbor through a door has a history of harassing area children and using racial slurs against them, neighbors said Wednesday.

Susan Louise Lorincz, 58, was arrested Tuesday on charges of manslaughter with a firearm, culpable negligence, battery and two counts of assault, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said in a statement. Manslaughter with a firearm is a felony punishable with up to 30 years in prison.

The arrest came a few days after authorities said Lorincz shot Ajike “AJ” Owens, a 35-year-old mother of four, through her front door in Ocala on Friday night. The sheriff's office said Owens had approached Lorincz’s home, knocked on the door multiple times, and demanded that Lorincz come outside to settle a dispute.

Owens’ 10-year-old son was standing beside her when she was shot, according to the sheriff’s office.

10-Year-Old’s Stand on Racism Stuns Oregon City Council Meeting

A child dominated an Oregon council meeting this week when he schooled attendees about the harsh realities of racism after a dead raccoon was dropped at the doorstep of the city’s mayor.

On June 5, Redmond Mayor Ed Fitch, who is white, discovered a harrowing note taped over the corpse of a dead raccoon at the front door of his law office. Fitch did not disclose the full content of the letter, but he told The Washington Post that it contained “intimidating” language concerning him and Redmond’s first and only Black city councilperson, Clifford Evelyn.

“It looked like the raccoon had bled out, right there,” Fitch previously told the Post.

According to the newspaper, Evelyn recognized the dead raccoon for its racial implications.

City council members addressed the incident at Tuesday’s meeting, according to local outlet KTVZ Bend.

In a prepared statement, Evelyn said the “cowardly act” was “something out of the 1950s and ’60s.”

“For those who do not support teaching accurate—and sometimes uncomfortable—American history in our schools, this is why it’s important to do so. Apparently, history repeats itself,” he said.

He said the act represented a “pattern of behavior with specific individuals” in the community, and he claimed racial incidents began to increase once he took office.

“Dog whistles and gestures will not deter me from my duties as city council,” he said.

After Evelyn thanked citizens for their support, other members of the community took to the dais. However, it was 10-year-old Gavin who shook the room into unprecedented applause.

“Why should us Black people suffer from racism when there are other races doing murders and [robberies] when us Black people are showing respect and [are] kind, but we still get treated like crap,” he said. “We should not have to get treated like this.”

Gavin, who is in the fourth grade, detailed his traumatizing racial experiences in school. He said he has repeatedly been called racial slurs and equated to a monkey, a racist caricature of Black people.

Mississippi Closed State Offices For Confederate Holiday, But Not Juneteenth

State offices remained open in Mississippi during the Juneteenth federal holiday, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans, almost two months after officials closed state offices to celebrate the Confederate Memorial Day state holiday on April 24.

Shuwaski Young, a Democratic candidate for secretary of state, criticized the decision in a Juneteenth statement.

“In Mississippi, Confederate Memorial Day and Confederate Heritage Month are recognized by the governor and statewide offices are closed—even though these so-called holidays are not federal holidays,” he said. “But on Juneteenth, a federal holiday, statewide offices remained open today. Not closing all state offices on Juneteenth sends a message that here in Mississippi, we don’t respect Juneteenth, and we do not recognize the importance and sanctity of this day. Furthermore, it speaks volumes to the Republicans’ misguided statewide leadership, lack of respect for Black Mississippians and our country’s history.”

Asked about Young’s criticisms, Gov. Tate Reeves’ office sent the Mississippi Free Press a statement this afternoon in response.

“Juneteenth is not a state holiday in Mississippi. State holidays are set by statute and thus would need to go through the legislative process before being sent to the governor for consideration,” the governor’s office said.

President Joe Biden signed a law making Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021. Efforts to make Juneteenth a state holiday, including eight bills this year alone, have failed. Four bills that would have removed the statutory Confederate Memorial Day holiday from state law also failed this session. Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves publicly acknowledged Juneteenth once in a 2020 tweet.

Trump-Obsessed Trucker Arrested for String of Wildly Racist Attacks

The feds have finally nabbed a Trump-obsessed Confederate sycophant accused of sparking racial terror for well over a year in his North Carolina town.

Marian Hudak, a white man, was arrested by the FBI in Concord Thursday and charged with interfering with federally protected activities and the right to fair housing, according to the criminal complaint filed by the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.

HudakDude_e1i2lx

The agent who led the investigation on Hudak said there was “probable cause” that Hudak committed racial intimidation.

One incident outlined in the criminal complaint occurred in November 2021 when Hudak allegedly egged his Mexican American neighbor’s car and told the family to “go back to” their country and called them “****ing Mexican alcoholics.”

According to the complaint, an argument ensued between Hudak and his neighbor, leading to a physical altercation and Hudak assaulting the neighbor in the stomach, face, and back of the head. The fight also caused damage to the neighbor’s car.

“I’m going to kill you,” Hudak told the neighbor, according to the complaint.

Prosecutors also said the neighbor told police about multiple attempts Hudak made to drive him off the road and verbal attacks against his sisters, who were just 9 and 13 years old.

Hudak’s terrifying tirades continued into July 2022 when he blared racist rhetoric from his truck’s loudspeaker in a Sam’s Club parking lot, the feds say.

In August 2022, Hudak allegedly called his neighbor’s mother “a ****ing fat ass Mexican ****” while she took out garbage.

“I promise you this is never going to end,” Hudak allegedly told the woman.

In October 2022, Hudak allegedly tried to run a Black driver and his girlfriend off the road in his pickup truck crudely decked out in Confederate flag paraphernalia and Trump stickers, according to the complaint. He allegedly stared down the Black driver and shouted a myriad of derogatory, anti-Black statements, including calling the Black driver the N-word. Hudak allegedly chased the driver and his girlfriend on the road, eventually getting out of his truck during traffic to beat on the Black driver’s window. Then, Hudak followed the man to his apartment complex, pointed a gun at people who were nearby, and allegedly threatened “I will kill you, n-----” to the man he followed, the complaint says.

Hudak was eventually questioned by the police in December. “I can’t take this anymore,” he told them, according to the complaint. “I got banned from Sam’s Club because they said I yell F Black people… It’s my First Amendment, and I will use it because they ask for trouble.”

Mississippi hits the trifecta of stories on this page of the thread:

Mississippi discriminates against Black residents with appointed judges, Justice Department says

A new Mississippi law discriminates against residents of the majority-Black capital city of Jackson by requiring the appointment of some judges in a state where most judges are elected, the U.S. Justice Department said in court papers filed Wednesday.

The department is seeking to join a federal lawsuit the NAACP filed against the state shortly after Republican Gov. Tate Reeves signed the law in April.

Kristen Clarke, the department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, said in a statement that Mississippi lawmakers created “a crude scheme that singles out and discriminates against Black residents” in Jackson and Hinds County, where the city is located. Clarke said the law creates a "two-tiered system of justice" with judges and prosecutors chosen by state officials.

“This thinly-veiled state takeover is intended to strip power, voice and resources away from Hinds County’s predominantly-Black electorate, singling out the majority-Black Hinds County for adverse treatment imposed on no other voters in the State of Mississippi,” Clarke said.

U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate has temporarily blocked the law from taking effect. Wingate would have to approve the Justice Department's request to intervene in the lawsuit.

Decades of DOD Efforts Fail to Stamp Out Bias, Extremism

In February, with the images of the violent insurrection in Washington still fresh in the minds of Americans, newly confirmed Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin took the unprecedented step of signing a memo directing commanding officers across the military to institute a one-day stand-down to address extremism within the nation’s armed forces.

The stand-down came in response to the participation and the subsequent arrests of several veterans and at least one active duty service member, who along with thousands of supporters of former President Donald Trump on Jan. 6, stormed the U.S. Capitol in a melee that sent lawmakers scrambling for safety, left one person fatally shot by Capitol Police and caused millions of dollars in damages to the building largely seen as the symbol of American democracy.

Austin’s order, which also came as America as a whole was grappling with how to address systemic racism, was the latest in a series of decades-long efforts by the military to purge its ranks of extremists and white supremacists. Last week, in response to the order the military issued new rules to deal with extremism that included social media usage policy updates where “liking” and reposting white nationalist and extremist content could result in disciplinary action. The DOD also updated its screening of recruits and is looking at how to prepare troops who are retiring from being targeted by extremist organizations.

But an AP investigation found that despite the new rules, racism and extremism remain an ongoing concern in the military.

The investigation shows the new guidelines do not address ongoing disparities in military justice under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the legal code that governs the U.S. armed forces. Numerous studies, including a report last year from the Government Accountability Office, show Black and Hispanic service members were disproportionately investigated and court-martialed. A recent Naval Postgraduate School study found that Black Marines were convicted and punished at courts-martial at a rate five times higher than other races across the Marine Corps.

The AP investigation also shows the military’s judicial system has no explicit category for hate crimes — something the federal government, 46 states, and the District of Columbia have on the books — making it difficult to quantify crimes motivated by prejudice.

As a result, investigative agencies such as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service or Army Criminal Investigative Division also don’t have a specific hate crime category, which impacts how they investigate cases.

“While it’s possible hate crimes have occurred, our investigations are not titled as such,” the NCIS said in an email. “For example, an assault on a person, regardless of the reason for the assault, would still be categorized as an assault…regardless of what motivated the crime.”

The new National Defense Authorization Act signed into law by President Biden on Monday directs the Secretary of Defense to make a recommendation to Congress within 180 days if a new statute is needed to address violent extremism, but does not address hate crimes or racial disparities in military law.

The military ordered big steps to stop extremism. Two years later, it shows no results

More than two years ago, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin launched a sweeping initiative − triggered by the Jan. 6 insurrection − to root out the threat of extremism across the United States armed forces.

But today, the military has almost nothing to show for its efforts, a USA TODAY investigation has found. Most steps in the process are stalled or inactive, and the reforms experts said were most important haven’t happened.

The proposed policy changes aimed to confront extremism before, during and after military service by:

  • Diverting extremists from the recruiting process with tougher questions and screening for warning signs such as white supremacist tattoos.
  • Creating an investigative unit to weed out potentially dangerous extremists in the ranks.
  • Building an education initiative to teach veterans about the extremist groups that court them and severing the long-known and often deadly veteran-to-extremist pipeline.

Instead, today the military offers almost no answers about what has actually happened. Even a crucial internal study on the scope of the military’s extremism problem has never been released, despite being ordered by Austin himself and completed more than a year ago, USA TODAY has confirmed.

Man arrested for placing white supremacy stickers on N.J. playground equipment, cops say

Police have charged a man with bias intimidation for allegedly placing stickers promoting white supremacy at a playground in Gloucester County.

A concerned citizen contacted the Greenwich Township Police Department on Monday to report that someone was placing stickers “promoting a White Nationalist and White Supremacy ideology” on a bench and playground equipment at Dr. Chester Ulmer Park, police said in a statement.

After the stickers were removed by Greenwich Township employees, new ones were placed over the next few days at the Memorial Avenue park, police said.

On Thursday morning, Detective Kyle Davis saw a man walk up to the playground and place several of the stickers on equipment and a bench, police said.

The stickers included a “white pride” image, a smiley face with an Adolph Hitler mustache, and references to poverty and literacy, police wrote in the summons issued to the man.

Idaho district's dress code discriminates against Latino students, complaint says

The American Civil Liberties Union is requesting a federal investigation into the Nampa School District in Idaho for implementing a "discriminatory dress code" that it alleges targets and discriminates against Latino students.

In an email Thursday, a spokesperson for the Justice Department confirmed that the Civil Rights Division's Educational Opportunities Section has received a complaint from the ACLU against the school district, about 40% of whose students are Latino. The spokesperson would not comment further.

The ACLU alleges the Nampa School District, near Boise, is violating students' freedom of expression, due process and civil rights by informally enforcing a dress code that deems items known to have cultural significance in some Latino communities to be “gang related attire.”

They include clothing resembling the cholo style, which is distinctively Mexican American, as well as Catholic rosaries and the image of a black Aztec eagle, which is known as a symbol that is the logo of the United Farm Workers, founded by labor and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez.

Latino students are also punished for "wearing clothes that all students commonly wear without issue, like red or blue clothing, based only on vague assertions of gang dress prohibitions," the complaint says. Red and blue also happen to be the colors of some of the schools in the district, including Nampa High School.

North Carolina judge investigated for saying racial bias exists files lawsuit

A North Carolina supreme court justice is suing the state’s judicial standards commission for allegedly violating her right to freedom of speech. After Justice Anita Earls made public comments about the lack of diversity in the North Carolina court system, the commission launched an investigation into her statements. According to a federal lawsuit filed by Earls’ lawyers, she has been “subjected to a series of months-long intrusive investigations,” which have led to a “chilling of her first amendment rights”.

In a June article on Law360, Earls pointed out the lack of diversity among North Carolina supreme court law clerks. “If you look at who is hired to serve as clerks to the justices … we have plenty of female clerks, but on racial diversity we’re lacking,” Earls said in the interview, pointing out that there was only one Black clerk and one Latina clerk employed in the court’s latest term.

Earls also said that she had witnessed “implicit bias” in court, telling the publication she witnessed a Black litigator being “attacked unfairly” by Earls’ colleagues. Earls said the court’s racial equity trainings and committees to increase diversity and inclusion had been disbanded.

Earls, North Carolina’s only Black female supreme court justice, alleges that the commission is targeting her ability to critique the court, especially on matters of diversity. “The first amendment provides me and every American the right to free speech, and to bring to light imperfections and unfairness in our political and judicial systems,” Earles said in a statement to the Guardian. “I believe public confidence in the judiciary is best promoted by honestly looking at the facts, not by sweeping the truth under the rug or silencing dissenters.”

On 15 August, the commission told Earls it would be investigating her comments, alleging that the remarks potentially violate ethics rules, specifically a provision that judges act “in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary”.
