two words...Phillip Fulmer

Recruiting is shaping up nicely with the big guy back running things in Knoxville! We are bringing big boy football back to UT, I cant wait for us to take out WVU in Charlotte in the opener!

Sorry to go OT, but my Volness is an illness I cant fight, I just have to let a little out here & there to keep my ..relative sanity.

we are going to get so many no calls on being held...Kerrigan would be the all-time sack leader if they'd call just a third of the holds against him...

A skins fan knows frustration well & few things are more frustrating than the number of blatant holds let go v Kerrigan. He gets choked & grabbed turning the corner twice a quarter without any reward for his efforts.

I notice Payne being held with regularity while making these gifs, I think they let people get away with more vs Bama; something I would fully support.

Payne with a nice 3rd down pass rush vs Col St. The best part of his game is getting up the field, imo.

Sometimes the still show things a bit better than a gif.

Grown Man just abusing other large humans. Payne put that man in the dirt; this is the quintessential Payne gif imo. Strong low, strong high, quick, violent, overwhelming.

Something Payne always does, he gets his hands up in passing lanes & here he negates a quick easy first down pass.

Thank you very ****ing much!!.I guarantee every game kerrigan gets held and it's BLATANTLY obvious..at least every other game he trys to plead his case to the ump or ref or who ever and they ignore him..

This brings me to I really really hope the skins brought this up to the not for long leauge this off season..

I love Payne's first step, and sometimes those pictures you put show that more clearly than the gifs.

Agreed. I may just use each for each play, the pictures make his disruption & first step more obvious.

Going through the FSU game now.

Get off is special

First off again - Payne pushes the line back giving FSU no cut back which forces a big loss:

Sometimes we need the stills & the gif. Payne first off the ball again & ..well.. you dont see many 300lb men do this -- the Payne cutback at the 12 yardline shows some rare agility.

Thanks so much for posting all those @volsmet. Pretty obvious how much he’s impacting the game even if the stat sheet doesn’t show it. Him Allen and Ioan might have the ability to absolutely dominate up front. That feels so weird to type as a Redskins fan.

You are quite welcome. I have the time ..& I think many who don't have as much time may enjoy seeing why some believe Payne is so special. Knowing the clips are enjoyed by anyone makes the time worthwhile. Thank you.

As far as your considerations about our line, I couldnt agree more. Payne is going to be incredibly uncomfortable to play against, once our staff puts their influence on his game, he's going to help Allen & Matt take their games to another level. Brown is probably the happiest LB in the league, playing behind these guys, & Settle, should make for some decent TFL opportunities.

We should probably make a Dline thread eventually, but I didn’t want to take away from Settle and Payne’s glory for now. Let their “welcome threads” be where we talk Dline for a couple more minutes. :ols:

Anyway, I LOVED reading this (posted by @Wildbunny in BHRBN, emphasis mine).

In the 7-on-7 and 11-on-11s between the starters on O and D, it was Greg Manusky's defense that was controlling things. There were numerous examples of the defensive line getting push up front, with those plays either ending in sacks/coaches blowing the whistle or Alex Smith completing checkdowns or longer passes that wouldn't be possible on Sundays. Whether it was in the red zone or the middle of the field, Smith and Co. just didn't string together a lot and the defense deserves credit for making it difficult on them.

Not going to kill the offense about it just yet, considering the OLine is still unhealthy and Alex needs time to get acclimated, but yeah... anytime I read about our Dline causing problems I’m going to be happy. Fight me. :P

Also thought this was interesting from the same article:

  • Maybe this is nothing, maybe it's something, and in case it's the latter, I'm going to mention it so I can say I mentioned it: While special teams took over the field to work on various special teams things, Jim Tomsula gathered D-linemen to get in a little extra work on the sideline. Also called over to join Tomsula's group: Ryan Anderson. No other linebacker took part, for what it's worth.

@thesubmittedone The signing of Mcphee illustrates a defensive that is open to utilizing an OLB as an interior rusher. Could Anderson utilize his natural strength and leverage to push the interior pocket on a rotational basis? I don't see why they wouldn't try that out and if he needs anyone to look at then Mcphee could be the example.(Ravens) Our OLB depth is interesting as I feel as if Anderson could perhaps develop into a Ryan Kerrigan type. SOLB that wins on technique, effort and strength. The problem is Kerrigan will probably be here for awhile and on the other side we ideally would like to draft a speed edge rusher. What adds to the intrigue is the Preston Smith contract situation. Does the benefit of an consistent interior push and his continued development allow him to hit the +14 sack mark? Does that validate giving him a big pay day or draft his replacement? Given the pending extension of the Scherff I think decision with be Crowder or Smith but not both.

I don't remember seeing Anderson playing inside in his film from Bama. That doesn't mean it never happened...I just don't recall seeing it from what I watched. That also doesn't mean he can't do it. That being said, he was pretty underwhelming last year...decent at setting the edge in the run game but not much of a disruptor. Maybe they think he can be a more effective menace inside on passing downs? Perhaps, but I'd think they'd continue to develop his chops as an OLB before doing that, especially considering that we have some nice youth and talent on the DL right now. Maybe they're experimenting with him as an inside blitzer or as a DL in a zone blitz situation.
