I think I agree with you about Paul as well. I say "think" because it's what I would do, but I don't know if the coaches will.

Well ... at least thinking that you agree is good progress.

You must be well on the road to recovery.

Sooners coach calls Redskins rookie Samaje Perine the 'total package'

There’s a lot of talk about his strength. Where did you see it show up?

It shows up on tape all over. For some guys it didn’t translate, but for him it does. First off, he has great instincts. He doesn’t miss many cuts; 95 percent of the time he takes the ball where he needs to go and then he’s so difficult for people to bring down. He has a low center of gravity. It’s not an easy target to tackle at all. He’s one of the best goal-line and short-yardage runners in recent memory. It shows up in pass protection and in the open field. He popped a lot of long runs after running through a tackle or breaking an arm tackle or using a stiff arm. He takes that weight room strength and does a great job carrying over.

How would you describe him as a runner?

He runs with good pad level. There’s not much of a target to tackle when he gets his shoulder down. People try to tackle at his legs and he’s so powerful he runs through stuff. He’s sneaky quick. He has great feet, a great stiff arm. He played against several guys at this level that were bigger than him, but I've never seen anybody just tackle him with ease. He understands blocking schemes and how things hit. The quickness for the size he has and the natural feel for the position are two things you can’t coach.

The stories I've read about him suggest he's a pretty humble kid. What was your experience with him?

He’s a breath of fresh air, incredibly humble and one of the most unselfish players. When we came in, he was coming off breaking the all-time rushing record and we come in and everyone is thinking we’re going to throw a lot more. He bought in from day one. If there was one guy to be upset about the change in offensive philosophy, it could have been him. We helped him branch out and add to his skillset and still be used to his strengths. We had two All-American backs in one backfield [with Mixon] and both were phenomenal how they handled it. He’s not a ‘me guy’. He’ll be all about the Redskins and that team. Guys in the locker room will love him. He's the total package.

I just watched the ultimate highlights video and wow that was impressive! Unlike the McCaffery highlights you see lots of physical contact and bad tacklers getting destroyed. He does not look as slow as some have suggested either. Can't wait to footage of him at rookie minicamp!

Now its apples and oranges ... LOL.

Agree with you on this ... that is why I think Carrier makes 53 and Paul gets pink slip.

Perine could be meh ... or he could be another Zeke ... only the Shadow knows at this stage.

Was that a Lynk Wray reference?

If he can stay on the field for 3rd and long, it allows Jay to run hurry up. Always having to trot CT out, hurts Jay's ambitions for uptempo/hurry up.

Give CT a series, vs every 3rd and long. Its more difficult to game plan for.

Dreaming of heavy jumbo ft Kelly and Perine....

Pre-draft I only watched Cook, McCaffrey, Fournette vids.

Post-draft I watched this kids vids. No idea why he fell to us where he did. Other than 2nd level speed this kid should have been at least a 2nd round prospect. Personally I think he does have decent 2nd level speed but gets knocked on it due to bruiser stereotypes. I like him better than McCaffrey and just as much as I liked Cook and Fournette.

He is exactly what this offense needs for the run game.

This is a guess, but I really think part of the reason that he fell was that hegained so much weight to take on the role of FB to Mixons HB and thats how he was utilized - he thrived in that role. Hopefully he can turn back the clock and focus on streamlining and agility. His passpro is underrated I think, as are hjs hands. He's never going to be a route runner but does this offense really need that out of a 3rd down back?

Guess what? He's already dropped weight. The "tingleing" your have down there, it's not the the porn you have up in the "other browser", it's about thinking what Perine is gonna do on the field. ;)

Was somebody I was screaming for. When that fan read his name at the draft party, I was so damn happy.

Seeing that he is already putting in the work to be in NFL ready shape is awesome. He's going to be our guy going forward

I have to agree. Listen, I love me some Fat Rob, and for a UDFA to come in and do what he did was great. And I love him as depth, if something happens to Perine, he can come in, give you 20+ carries and run hard and get yards that are not there.

But, I think Perine is going to be a beast. If Gruden sticks to the run, he might well put up 1400+ yards and a bunch of TD's. He is the kind of guy that late in the game, after he's been crunching people all day, the D is just gonna GTFO of his way. Or late in the season. Outside, when it's cold. No one is gonna want to try and stop him.

Big, physical running backs wear down a D and can just suck the life out of them. Moreso when the ground gets hard and the weather get cold and nasty. To have a guy like him, late in the season helps an Offense so much, because when it's cold, and windy it's hard to throw. But it also really hurts to try and tackle a guy like Perine. For those old enough to remember, Riggins was at his best late in the season, and took over in the playoffs. For these exact reasons.

Gah-lee, it is all shaping up to be a beautiful thing. So many things to like about the pick and how it could transform our run game. If you remember last season we were VERY lucky to have Kelly be as reliable a RB as he ended up being. While Mack did flash in his limited carries, could we have depended on him to be a 15-20 carry back? Obviously Chris Thompson is a limited carry, situational piece (although good at what he does). We put our eggs in the Matt Jones Basket and he dropped it (quite literally).

Now I know we still have OTAs/Training camp, preseason and regular season games still have to be played but Perine and Kelly (even at an equal timeshare) is much more exciting than what we had last season(for reasons you stated above).

Another mention-able about Samaje is his personality, even tempered country boy. Dude is mature and seems dedicated to his craft. Someone brought up earlier how after TD's he looks for his Teammates after handing the ball back to the official. Has a very business as usual attitude and shouldn't let big moments scare him or have him cost us(knock on wood).

We drafted Matt Jones to be the kind of runner that Perine is and was in college. Scot took a gamble that the beast inside Jones could be unlocked by our coaching staff, unfortunately Jones was soft and couldn't be coached into running the way he should. I think we now have someone, as you said, that will "wear down a D and can just suck the life out of them"...

Now a lot of us have all been tooting the horn. Should translate.

I cannot agree with this any more. He is mature, humble, had his role reduced and changed at OU because of Mixon, was asked to put weight on to be more of a blocker and not a peep out of him. I think, we get the Freshman version. He's already dropped some of that weight and he'll be the 1700+ yard 21 TD guy. Look out NFCE, You're NOT going to like trying to stop this guy 2x a year!

Why did he last until the 4th round?

Hes not explosive. Hes not shifty. He was over shadowed by Mixon.

It was also a particularly deep draft for RBs. Most years, he's probably a 2nd rounder. He might of gone higher, if they didnt ask him to bulk up and block more also.

Im excited about him. I think he's a MJD floor, Bettis ceiling kind of guy. Not sure if he'll ever be a premier back in the league, but I do think he's the type who has a long successful career doing dirty work and all the little things well.
