nonniey
Nice. A NATO member succumbing to extremism too This may not actually be a bad thing. I think military coups actually may be in the Turkish Constitution. If not it is certainly in the Turkish military's charter as the final defender of the secular Turkish Republic (Their founder Ataturk set up the military to do just that). The Turkish military has intervened multiple times in the past including conducting coups when they determined the civilian government was threatening the secular Republic. And it has appeared for years that Edragan has been a threat to secularism in Turkey It may be the military acting against the extremism you fear they are succumbing too. That is hard for Americans to understand as Military intervention against the civilian government is anathema to us.

FanboyOf91
Curious to see what's actually been true and what hasn't been once the dust settles Yup, there's a lot of disinformation being dumped now. http://www.ft.com/fastft/2016/07/16/gulen-linked-body-condemns-attempted-turkey-coup/ On Friday Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and others in his government blamed Fethullah Gulen for an attempted coup. But the Alliance for Shared Values, a nonprofit movement inspired by Mr Gulen, put out a statement condemning “any military intervention in domestic politics of Turkey”. nonniey
When democracy just don't work, bring out the tanks. Sometimes it doesn't work - Hitler was elected and it would have been better for Democracy if the German Army had moved to remove him. That said Ataturk (Founder of the their Republic) specifically tasked the Turkish Army with preserving secularism in Turkey.

Predicto
I can't say that the Gulenists are or are not behind this.... but I can say that Erdogan regularly blames the Gulenists for everything that he can't blame on the Kurds. Destino
A failed coup might be the worst possible outcome. Depends on who is telling the truth. If the President really is setting up to grab power, and he's done some things that make this a valid concern, this failure would give him cause to purge the military of opponents. redskins59
I totally support the coup. What needs to happen is for a dictator to declare the country as atheist. Destroy all mosques. And finally declare that punishment for believing in Allah is death. I have started to believe that I like Saddam more than Isis.
