Mirror: Turkey 'coup': Live updates as explosion and gunfire reported in capitol Ankara

No Excuses

Recommended Posts

I'm fascinated by military coups. Like what's going on in the mind of the grunt private on the ground. How does he decide what to do? Was he prepped for it? How do they plan and keep secret such a massive action, especially in the age of mass media and communications.

I wonder how much of he military is part of this coup. All of it, a lot of it, or just one faction.

They seem to have a lot of forces so far though.

The other thing to keep in mind is situation with the Kurds. Might they try to take advantage of the chaos by declaring autonomy or something? Could be a bad idea though. The military is no fan of them and they would't be happy about losing territory either.

I should add that coups are generally a disaster and despite what one thinks of the current regime, this course of action is going to have terrible consequences for the region

Yeah, I confess that what I know about Turkey is that I can find it on a map, and what I've read in this thread.

(I take solace in the belief that the former makes me more qualified than most Americans.)

And I confess that I'm trying not to fixate on the folks describing the military as "secular", and thinking "then this is good, right?"

I disagree. The military coup in Egypt was a great thing.

Democracy cannot be entrusted to the ignorant extremist populations that are the majority throughout the Muslim world. They will immediately install a fundamentalist tyrannical religious regime

Their best hope as a region is secular dictatorships or monarchies.

Executions in the streets of thousands of people for weeks on end is a cool thing too
