Projection of Opening 2016 53 Player Roster (three open slots)

Twelfth man

Recommended Posts

I thought I read somewhere that the Redskins will not keep both DJax and Garcon.  Is that true?

No, every article has advised they will keep both this year.  The same articles are saying they don't see keeping both next year.

To add, the articles commented that they don't need the cap space this year and cutting either would make the team worse so really doesn't make sense this year.  And, cutting Roberts will save some cap space.

To put Subfield on the practice squad... does he have to clear waivers first???.. if so, do you guys think he won't be picked by someone in this QB-depleted league??

Jarrett is not playing this year, he is a project for the future... he will go to IR. Injuries from muscles, joint or ligaments are one thing... nerves another big issue...

Scot is in love with Davis, he is in shape and very talented... he will not only make the roster, he will find significant playing time and he will produce for us.

What do you guys think about Pierre Thomas??... he adapted smoothly and produced for us when on the field... can he challenge Thompson for a roster spot??... or be the 4th RB??... I know age is a limitations according to SM philosophy, but they like him.

I've been keeping an up to date roster/depth chart which I recently updated with draft picks and reported UDFAs. I've bolded my roster predictions and italicized players I think are "on the bubble" in any sense. Thought you guys might be interested!

For Sudfield to go on PS, he would have to clear waivers but you gotta remember he's a 6rd pick. He would have to play amazing in the preseason for another team to wanna put him on their active roster.

I agree Kyshon will be on IR unfortunately. I really like him, he's a baller.

I like Pierre as well but if either Brown or Marshall shows something, then I rather go with youth. You can always bring in a vetern rb during the course of the season if either fails.

Injuries will be change this obviously. But as of now:

QB (2-3 spots): This is pretty much locked in. Cousins starts. McCoy backs up. The only drama is if Sudfield makes the 53. That'll likely be dictated by his training camp/pre-season.

RB (3-4 spots): IF QB is set, this is exact opposite. Would expect to see some veteran signed (Thomas?), but a street veteran wouldn't be a lock either. Jones is the presumptive starter. Thompson should make it if healthy. Marshall has a slight leg up on all the UDFAs since he was drafted. But this looks really thin.

OL (9-10 spots):They kept 10 here last year, and all but Compton return. Williams, Scherff, and Moses are locks. I'd imagine Long and Kuoandjio make it unless they just look like crap. Lavauo and Lichtensteiger too unless they can't look healthy. That leaves 2-3 spots. Nsekhe came out of nowhere last year, but looked good. The team needs another tackle and the only guy to challenge him would be Cofield. LeRibeus, Reiter, Booth, and even Dominick Jackson could get one of the last few spots

WR (5-6 spots): Probably the same 6 as last year with Doctson taking Roberts spot

TE (3-4 spots): Reed is in. Paul is in. Davis is in if he can show he has anything left. Carrier probably goes to PUP. They'll still likely want a blocking TE, meaning Paulsen has a shot unless Davis is a way better blocker than I remember.

DL (6-7 spots): Reyes, Murphy, RJF, Paea, and Baker are in. Ioannidis seems like a strong bet since they need a DT. They'd probably want another DT if possible (Golston?)

ILB (4-5 spots): Foster and Compton should make it. Spaight should too. Daniels if he shows anything at the expense of Riley. Garvin should taken the token LB/special teams spot than Hayward had

OLB (4-5 spots): Kerrigan, Smith, and Galette are in. I'm guessing Bates has the leg up on the 4th spot

CB (4-5 spots): Norman, Breeland, and Fuller should be fine. Dunbar should make it. Then you have one last spot, maybe for a vet like Blackmon or Toler

S (4-5 spots): I'm counting Cravens here. Hall should make it. I'm guessing Bruton too. Jarrett is probably PUP bound. That means Blackmon could slide in here and Ihenacho if he ever stays healthy. Maybe Tevon Carter.

K, P, LS all the same (3 spots)

So we sign Vernon Davis, guarantee him over one million dollars, the GM that signed him, also drafted him, and has commented "how good he looks in mini camp" won't make the team, but a guy not even worth one of our two 7th round picks, a WR, which arguably is one of the deepest positions we have, Reggie Diggs, will make the team?!?!?!?

I don't even know where people come up with things like this.

Vernon Davis was sought out by our GM, there is ZERO chance he doesn't make the team, and I don't even know who Reggie Diggs is, but I'm going out on a limb, and say no chance he makes the team, and in fact, is one of the first players cut in August

Davis is a better blocker and receiver than Paulson, no idea why anyone would write in Paulson over him. Plus everything that the Mayor said above.

And Sudfeld is making the 53. He wasn't a 7th rounder--a guy taken to get a jump on UDFA because he'd likely sign elsewhere...He was a 6th rounder and Gruden wants a developmental QB on the roster. They won't risk losing him by trying to sneak him on the PS.

Your projection is very similar to mine with the following five exceptions (if I read it correctly):

You have the Redskins taking 25 on offense (instead of 24), adding a 4th TE in lieu of a 5th ILB on defense.  I had Niles Paul or Logan Paulsen along with ILB newcomer Terence Garvin making the squad.  You project both Paul and Paulsen, with Garvin on the outside looking in.

Josh LeRibeus is on the bubble but makes your squad (I am hoping for an upgrade here but you may be correct if Austin Reiter did not improve, since there was no UDFA center added, unless Spencer Long wins backup center role and they pick up a new UDFA OL-man.  The running attacked was cut in half with Lavauo and Lichtensteiger out and Long and / or LeRibeus in.  Matt Jones averaged 5.25 yards per carry with both Lavauo and Lichtensteiger playing as opposed to 2.78 yards per carry when they were out).

You have Quinton Dunbar making the squad whereas I was on the fence on whether it will be Dunbar, Deshazor Everett or an UFDA DB.

On defense, you have Houston Bates on the bubble but making the 53 in lieu of Ziggy Hood whom I projected.  Bates needed to bulk up for stronger consideration at OLB / special teams spot; does anyone know if that happened?

Niles Paul as a kick returner?  If Paul makes the team, I saw him contributing to special teams but not as a kick-returner.

I would love if the Skins picked up Matt Slauson up to play C, we could pick him to replace Litch for around the same cap figure. Slauson is in the mccloughan mold of tough nosed linemen and is 30lbs heavier than Litchensteiger.

Slauson recently signed with the Chargers.

Interesting, overall I disagreed a bit with depth, Cravens is going to start SS, Doctson will start I think,  I think we take one less wide out and qb and 4 TEs.

Offense

QBs (2/2) - Cousins, McCoy, Sudfeld

RBs (3/3) - Jones, Thompson, Marshall

WRs (5/5) - Jackson, Doctson, Garcon, Crowder, , Grant, Ross  - I think your depth is off here and Doctson becomes a starter.  The question is second or third.

OL (8/9 as long as Lauvao recovers if not then 7/9 filled) - Williams, Scherff, Lauvao, Lichtensteiger, Moses, Long, Kouandjio, Nsekhe; contested position - who will be the back-up center or extra OL (if Long wins back-up center spot)?  I have a feeling Scotty may pick up a center if the market is right.

TEs (4/4) - Reed, Davis, Paulsen and Paul

Defense (24/26)

DL (8/8) - Baker, Golston, Murphy, Reyes, Paea, Ioannidis, Jean-Francois,

OLB (3/3) - Kerrigan, Galette, Smith,

ILB (5/5) - Compton, Foster, Riley, Daniels, Garvin

CB (4/4) - Norman, Fuller, Breeland Toler  - I think fuller has a chance to start.

Safety - Hall(FS) Cravens (SS), Ihenacho, , Blackmon, Bruton, Disagree with your assessment of need if Hall can ball at FS.  Also IMO your depth is off here and Cravens starts since SS is his natural position.

Special Teams Specialists (3/3)

K (1/1) - Hopkins

P (1/1) - Way

LS (1/1) - Sundberg

Hogs Haven has made its 53 player opening day roster prediction:

http://www.hogshaven.com/2016/5/11/11655774/redskins-53-man-roster-prediction

It differs in the following ways:

On offense, both Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen and 5 WRs make the roster for Hogs Haven; I thought only one of those two TEs would make the roster and the team would retain a 6th WR (Ryan Grant) instead.  For the offensive line, Hogs Haven has Josh LeRibeus making the team in lieu of Kory Lichtensteiger.

On defense, Hogs Haven has Corey Crawford, Martrell Spaight, Kyshoen Jarrett, Quinton Dunbar and Deshazor Everett making the team instead of Ziggy Hood, Terence Garvin, Greg Toler and Duke Ihenacho.  I had Kyshoen Jarrett starting the season on the PUP list with Dunbar or Everett or CFA making the final roster spot, depending on DB and special teams contributions.

I really hate the idea of carrying a third QB on the active roster. But as others have said with us using a 6th rounder on the guy. If he plays even reasonably well in preseason Sudfeld is making the roster. I just hate that it costs you the ability to carry an extra WR or DB.

http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/washington-redskins/redskins-depth-chart-preview-stiff-competition-inside-linebacker

Riley, Foster and Compton figure to emerge from camp 1-3, with the latter two probably battling for one starting job alongside Riley, who owns the team’s eighth highest cap hit at $5.049 million in 2016. (For comparison’s sake, Foster will count $1.1 million against the cap, while Compton is due to count $600,000.)

We anticipate Perry being a starter,” Coach Jay Gruden said at the NFL owners meetings in late March. “He’s a good player for us, obviously.”

As many have Perry getting cut, I found this to be an interesting statement.  Obviously, he can be beat out, but there is a reason he wasn't cut to this point.

My problem with Riley is that while I believe he's a starting caliber backer, I'm not sure he fits this defense. He doesn't seem to take on blockers very well - or rather he doesn't shed blockers very well - and he doesn't excel in coverage (though I think he's improved over the years).

With that said, he might be our best linebacker at the moment. He's probably a good one to keep around (possibly, or even likely as a starter) this year until we figure out what we have in Daniels/Garvin/Spaight.

I've seen the name Corey Crawford come up in several posts, getting chatter about making the roster.  I found this article, which is helpful, but I'm curious if people have seen things that show he's ready or if it's hopeful thoughts based on his size and team need.

I've heard he is "in play" but, of course, we need to wait for the pre-season battles to see which OLmen make the final cut.  It's about the competition to see who win out.

The most we have going for him is Gruden, in a post draft interview I believe, specifically mentioning him by name and saying he's a young, up and coming player on the Dline.

Let's hope he's more of a Crowder or a Moses than a Ryan Grant in terms of an offseason Gruden man crush, lol.

And I like Ryan Grant, don't get me wrong.

Per NFL.com, he looks the part, but his consistency and effort were the weak points. Can't imagine he sticks on the roster if that's what Scot et. al. are seeing. So basically, if he continues(?) to work hard, he could be a contributor... though he has some relatively stiff competition.

Of the 90 players announced for OTAs, 18 are linebackers.

There are 9 solid options at LB  (Bates, Compton, Daniels, Foster, Galette, Kerrigan, Riley, Smith and Spaight) battling for 7 or 8 spots and this does not include Cravens at the dime linebacker spot.

So at least one of the above (probably Bates / Spaight) plus 9 more veterans / college free agency acquisitions (Shiro Davis, Ejiro Ederaine, Carlos Fields, Terence Garvin, James Gayle, Adam Hayward, Willie Jefferson, Lynden Trail and Mike Wakefield) must be fighting for a chance to be special teams standouts right?

Garvin has done well in special teams on the Steelers (and the same for Bruton on the Broncos).

I think there's a pretty good chance we carry 9 linebackers, but yeah, Cravens may count toward one of those spots.

I'm assuming the (absolute) minimum would be 6 DL, 8 LBs, 9 DBs... though we probably carry 7 DL (gets us to 24 total). Which likely means we carry one more defender - either a backer or DB. Gonna be a heck of a battle for that last spot.

I'm very interested to see who will be:

The 4th (maybe 5th?) safety if Hall, Ihenacho and Bruton are the top 3 (I'd give Everett the edge due to ST). Blackmon is a strong possibility due to his ability to fill in at corner (and experience with Fewell), but I'm not sure about his team's play.

The 5th corner spot if Norman, Breeland, Fuller and Dunbar are 1-4 (based off almost no evidence, I'm guessing Carrington)

The 4th (maybe 5th?) ILB if Compton, Riley and Foster are 1-3 (I'm going Daniels, but Garvin and Spaight are serious contenders, and there's a host of others).

The final Dlinemen if Baker, Paea, and RJF are 1-3... Ioannidis almost certainly makes it, but that puts Golston, Hood, Reyes, Crawford, Murphy and some FAs battling for (probably) 3 spots. If we pencil Golston in ('cause who's really gonna bet against him at this point?), then we've got 4+ guys competing for 2 spots. Safest bet at this point is probably Murphy and either Reyes or Hood.

I think OLB is set with Kerrigan, Galette, Smith and Bates, but they obviously could keep a 5th, or someone could unseat Bates.

Edit: I didn't include Cravens (duh), so that shifts things slightly. Thinking he takes an ILB spot and we carry 5 there, 5 corners, 7 DL, 4 OLB and 4 safeties.

That defensive battle is going to be the most fun we've had in the preseason since Pat White.

Hopefully this one turns out better.

There are several vets who we've forgotten about that are in the 90 man as well.  Toler is going to give it a good run and Bruton at Safety I still have high hopes for.

I think Toler is going to be a guy, that if he doesn't make it, he's going to be a first phone call type of a dude in the case of an injury.

Good post, skinny.
