So the police shot and killed the one of the prison escapees in upstate new York. He was unarmed. I'm sure the outrage is coming.

Not entirely true. It was said he had a shotgun, and they were convicted murderers.

Besides this is upstate NY...they had pretty much told every resident that if they had the chance, to kill them on sight. They told my bosses husband that if they saw them on the road to run then over with their truck 3 times...just to be sure.

Any DOC officers or friends of DOC officers were pretty much going to shoot to kill...troopers and FBI wanted them alive for questioning.

When Jonathan Sanders, an unarmed black man, died last week in Mississippi while in police custody, it was a racially motivated killing, attorneys representing the victim's family claimed Tuesday.

 

Officials handling the case either could not be reached for comment or declined to speak, citing the pending investigation.

 

Sanders, 39, a resident of Stonewall, Mississippi, died last Wednesday after allegedlybeing placed in a chokehold by Officer Kevin Herrington, attorneys C.J. Lawrence and Chokwe Lumumba told The Huffington Post on Tuesday.

 

Sanders, who trained horses and was often seen riding around in a horse-drawn buggy, was at a gas station with one of his animals at about 10 p.m. Wednesday when he saw an altercation between Herrington and another white man, whom Sanders knew. According to Lawrence, Sanders approached them and asked Herrington to leave the other man alone.

 

A witness told the attorneys that after Sanders left, Herrington allegedly said, "I'm gonna get that n****r."

Three newly released dash cam videos show the dramatic moment that police in California shot and killed an unarmed man and wounded another in a Los Angeles suburb two years ago.
 

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the Gardena Police Department to release the videos, filmed by dashboard cameras in three police patrol vehicles on June 2, 2013. The order came after several media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times and The Associated Press, requested access to the footage because of the recent rash of police shootings across the country.

The videos show three police officers drawing their weapons on 35-year-old Ricardo Diaz-Zeferino and his two friends, whom the officers mistakenly suspected of stealing a bicycle.

In the footage, two of the men obeyed police commands to raise their hands above their heads. However, the third man, identified as Diaz-Zeferino, was reportedly drunk and possibly confused by the officers' commands. Witnesses said Diaz-Zeferino was trying to tell officers that they were stopping the wrong men, Daily Herald reported.

Authorities in Waller County, Texas are being questioned after video of the arrest of a 28-year-old African-American woman who died in police custody three days later surfaced.

 

Sandy Bland had just moved to Texas to take a job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University, when she was pulled over by police for not properly using her turn signal. She was asked to exit her vehicle, and when she did, officers threw her to the ground.

 

In the video, Bland can be heard screaming that officers “just slammed my head into the ground. Do you not even care about that? I can’t even hear!”

 

As she is being taken into custody, she repeated her complaint. “You just slammed my head into the ground and everything!”

 

She was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer. Waller County Sheriff Glenn Smith told ABC7 that Bland “had been combative on the side of the road,” although there was no evidence of combativeness in the video.

 

Three days later, she was found dead from what sheriff’s deputies are calling “self-inflicted asphyxiation.” Sheriff Smith said that he had spoken to Bland over the jail intercom only an hour before her body was found, but he did not specify what the two had discussed.

I don't understand how an officer gets fired for racism/brutality, and in this type of climate there had to be overwhelming evidence he was in the wrong for that result to happen, and yet he can still be hired by another department. It just goes to show this type of conduct is encouraged and sought after. 

 

This is why just firing a police officer for this type of stuff isn't enough, they need to prosecuted and jailed like any other citizen breaking the law.

Isn't the easiest solution to all of this is to just teach people to be respectful and cooperative with police? Use your manners and do what they say. Mouthing off, threatening, running away from, and attacking the police doesn't seem to end up well sometimes.

A friend said she called him from jail Friday night and told him her version of what happened.

"She was smoking when he pulled her over. Told her to put her cigarette out, she had an exchange of words and it just went downhill. She said he snatched her out of the window and slammed her on her face," LaVaughn Mosely said.

Since her death, alleged video of Bland's arrest has been posted to both Facebook and YouTube.

The video shows deputies cuffing Bland on the ground. She appears to be yelling, saying the deputies slammed her head into the ground.

One of the deputies then turns his attention to the person recording the altercation, telling them they need to leave.

From the barber shop across the street, Renee McKnight had a front row seat to Bland's arrest.

"She was telling him to get his so and so hands off of her and jerking away from him," McKnight said.

McKnight said she then saw Bland end up on the ground.

"I couldn't tell if he slammed her down there or it was a maneuver she did trying to stop him from putting her in the car caused her to be put on the ground," McKnight said. "She was very, very upset. She wasn't trying to get in that police car."

Family and friends say this doesn't add up and they don't believe she would hurt herself.

Who gives a **** if she had warrants. It still doesn't seem to make sense that she decided to off herself spontaneously in police custody. Apparently there's been a handful of people who have committed suicide in that jail. It seems odd to me.

All deaths at the hands of police or in police custody should be examined by a third party agency with no personal or professional ties to the officers involved or any of the department.  They should have unlimited access to any relevant evidence and should be able to walk in and obtain it without prior notification of any kind.  The officers involved should have the same rights as anyone else, with no special privileges above an average citizen. 

 

If we had that we wouldn't need to be asking the absurd question of "should this case be looked at by someone credible".  All of them should because cops have proven, time and time again that they can't be trusted to investigate themselves.  They form a bond and feel loyalty towards eachother, which is laudable but disqualifies them as impartial investigators.

The dashcam video released to the public of the violent arrest of Sandra Bland was edited.

 

Bland was a 28-year-old Black Lives Matter civil rights activist and vocal critic of police brutality who died in police custody after a Texas officer pulled her over for a traffic violation, ordered her out of her car when she refused to put out her cigarette, and aggressively arrested her. Police say Bland committed suicide, yet the Waller County prosecutor says Bland’s case is “being treated just as it would be a murder investigation.”

 

The Texas Department of Public Safety uploaded dashcam police video of the arrest to YouTube on 21 July. Parts of the approximately 52 minutes of footage it uploaded have clearly been doctored.
