Harlem Renaissance by Immortal Technique

Harlem once was red line district rated
Designated ghetto like the yellow star of David
And you wonder why people don't own they homes
'Cause the racist bank wouldn't **** mortgage a loan

Until after the invasion of gentrification
Eminent domain intimidation, that's not negotiation
And it's frustrating to look at every day
Like watchin' a porno on 56k

Biohazard labs instead of store rooms
What's next mother****, projects as dorm rooms?
You ain't foolin' nobody in this community, dude
With your little fake Manhattanville community group

Ivy league real estate firms are corrupt
That lay siege to your castle like the Moors in Europe
They treat street vendors like criminal riffraff
While politicians get the corporate kickbacks

Harlem Renaissance, a revolution betrayed
Modern day slaves thinking that the ghetto is saved
'Till they start deporting people off the property
Ethnically cleansing the hood, economically

They want to kill the real Harlem Renaissance
Tryin' to put the Virgin Mary through a early menopause
The savior is a metaphor for how we set it off
Guerrilla war against the rezoning predators

When I speak about Harlem I speak to the world
The little Afghan boy and the Bosnian girl
The African in Sudan, the people of Kurdistan
The third world American indigenous man

Palestinians, Washington Heights Dominicans
Displaced New Orleans citizens
Beach front Brazilian favelas that you livin' in
The hood is prime real estate, they want back in again

I didn't write this to talk ****, I say it because
Some of y'all forgot what the Harlem Renaissance was
We had revolution, music and artisans
But the movement was still **** up like Parkinson's

'Cause while we were giving birth to the culture we love
Prejudice kept our own people out of the club
Only colored celebrities in the party
And left us a legacy of false superiority

W.E.B. Du Bois versus Marcus Garvey
And we ended up selling out to everybody
The Dutch soldiers and the John Gotti's banksters
Modern day gangsters, immobile army

They want to move us all out the NYC
Like they did to the Jews with the Alhambra decree
So support your own businesses and institute of knowledge
'Cause the real Harlem Renaissance is economic

Video is NSFW

i love Immortal Technique, but like a lot of Talib Kweli's early solo stuff, Black Thought, Pharoah Monche....a lot of their community based lyrics...while "real" are very short-sighted.  what i love the most about the Black Star album was that Mos Def seemed to hem in Kweli's lyrics towards a broader, more "American struggle" relevancy.  the Black Star album, while it has a couple of very ethno-centric tracks, the rest of the album....especially Thieves in the NIght (above) is very relevant across almost any American platform.

not saying one's better than the other...but for some obvious reasons, i relate more to one than the other, & i appreciate it a little more when lyrics try to be more relvant to humanity as opposed to a particular sect of people.  just my 2c.

From the most under-appreciated member of the Wu-Tang Clan.

I bomb atomically, Socrates' philosophies
And hypotheses can't define how I be droppin' these
Mockeries, lyrically perform armed robbery
Flee with the lottery, possibly they spotted me
Battle-scarred shogun, explosion when my pen hits
Tremendous, ultra-violet shine blind forensics

Fab Five Freddie told me everybody's high
DJ's spinnin' are savin' my mind
Flash is fast, Flash is cool
Francois sez fas, Flashe' no do
And you don't stop, sure shot
Go out to the parking lot
And you get in your car and you drive real far
And you drive all night and then you see a light
And it comes right down and lands on the ground
And out comes a man from Mars
And you try to run but he's got a gun
And he shoots you dead and he eats your head

I met a German girl in England who was goin' to school in France

Said we danced in Mississippi at an Alpha Kappa dance.

It wasn't me no no child it wasn't me.

It musta been some other body no no child it wasn't me.

This thread is great, I think I ran out of likes unfortunately. Seeing as a lot of my classic favorites have been posted I'll see if I can add a little J Cole to the mix.  This whole song is awesome but one little clip I like is:

I’m ill enough to kill cancer: baby, I’m chemo
Down in Miami and I throw like Marino
Get a whole lot of you-know and she bald like an Eagle
No, not on top but down there
She say she want to hop on top, "girl, I don’t care"
You better get yours fore I reach mine
Cause then I’m throwing peace signs
If you a freak, I can take you to your peak
Girl I do it to the maximum: Nissan

Brother Ali's 1st verse from "Rain Water"

"And I can't stop feelin' empty smilin'

A wise man once told me that every cloud has a silver lining
I wanted to believe him but it's a trick to find 'em
When the people around me continue dying
Granddad was in the twilight of his life
When he closed his eyes tight and opened his wrists wide
What make a tenth round fighter with the winning score
Decide to eat or throw it's hollow for the whistle blow
Maybe I'll never know
But I inherited his poetic soul so the symbolism's yet to show
Was life so obscene that death's more serene?
Or was an old author tryin' to write his own closing scene?
Nothing stings like knowing that the woman that gave me this life
Is being eaten from the inside
I thought we never make **** right
I wish I had of viewed it once clear before you were done here
That's two in one year that I let leave here
Loving me without shedding one single tear
Either I'm one of the strongest people left
Or y'all should stone me for even tryin' to steal breath"
