Michael Sam - Should we?

Can you provide me with examples of how he's been a distraction this season?

Nope. I don’t follow the daily goings on of the Rams or Cowgirls so I can’t provide links to specific examples for you.

But when people that nornally don't follow the ins and outs of the NFL are talking about a player for something other than what they do on the field (like Vick or Tebow) it is distracting from the football part. The fact that we are talking about a 7th round draft pick who is not on the Redskins or is not on any NFL roster for that matter is a big hint.

That makes no sense. So he would be a distraction because some other news outlet besides ESPN would talk about him? Honestly, I bet most people forgot he was even on the Cowboys' PS until he was cut this week. Some distraction that is!

My response is two pronged:

(1) HELL

and

(2) NO!

Besides, what makes anyone believe that this kid is smart enough to give us any substantial details?

You SERIOUSLY don't think that the bleating morons at NFLn or BSPN won't make this a huge distraction for Dallass/Redskins week?!! Besides, the ONLY reason this kid was even a top news story during ALL of preseason was *because* he was ghey!

I say why not? We need help on defense. What does it hurt to sign him to the PS?

And for those saying, "he's not any good, he can't stick on a PS", remember someone by the name of James Harrison? He bounced around different practice squads before he finally got his shot.

Well, one of the glaring issues is the current coaching staff cannot get the starters we have NOW playing at a high level or playing in a scheme that actually works. Sam would be just another guy on the field in the wrong place [ no pun intended ].

If he were a CB or safety, it MIGHT be worth thinking about, because thats where the issues on defense is; besides Haslett.

So we shouldn't sign a guy that may be able to provide depth because some clowns on NFL Network will talk about it?

Guys, we shouldn't let RG3 play again this year, NFL Network will talk about it!

Exactly, Cam Wake was out of football for two years before even trying the CFL, Harrison was added and released 3 times by the Steelers and sent to Europe by the Ravens before he finally went back to Pittsburgh and stuck.  Kurt Warner's journey from NFL training camp with GB, to the AFL, then to Europe and back again before getting his chance is as well documented as any story. Amendola, Anthony Armstrong, Ninkovich, Browner, etc. I could keep naming active players but I think we all get the point.

The former scout who runs the interactive film room for the Cowboys website was pretty surprised by the release. He was impressed with the progress Sam made since the signing and was expecting him to be a December call-up for Dallas. There's even still a chance the Cowboys bring him back. Guys get waived and brought back in season constantly.

There are legitimate football reasons to perhaps think Sam is not a great fit in DC or on other teams, but being cut from a team with a deep line and being released from a practice squad halfway through year aren't any of those. There's a near a dozen of those guys every year who end up as contributors on rosters within 2 seasons.

Someone seriously just suggested in this thread Haslett would blame Sam for the defensive regression to get another year if he came here, that's how much this kid brings out irrational thinking among a set of NFL fans.

Dude can't even stay on practice squads. That's plural. No.

Many productive players have been cut (multiple times) from practice squads. I'm not gonna look it up, you can easily pull this info. So that is not a reason to not bring him in. I kinda of liked what I saw from him in preseason. And before you hyperfans say, "he did that against scrubs", well, so did Kirk and he got a chance to prove himself. I still say, due to the circus aspect, you don't bring him in..especially our locker room which is always been unstable.

Couple of things here.

1) Kirk sure did get his chance. And how did that go? Success in the preseason does not = regular season success.

2) Our locker room has always been unstable? Since when? I don't remember ever hearing/reading about that. If anything, I've read quite the opposite. That we've had a strong locker room.

In theory bringing him here *could* work out in the long term, stuff him on the practice squad, see if he can develop.

Being realistic though, the odds of him working out are extremely minute.  He's been dropped from 2 teams so far.  While once in a while a player who was dropped from practice squads works out, it's a very rare occurrence.  I suspect the FO has done their due diligence, looking at him in the draft.

If they didn't like him in the draft, and since then he's been dropped from two teams, I can't imagine anything has changed that would make him a realistic option now.

not to mention the good will with the GLBT community would be a deflection of the name game.

... until the media asked him about his feelings on the name, and then it all blows up in our face ...

I think (i.e., my opinion) if it weren't for his sexual orientation, a practice squad cut from the team from the Irving area (I think we should start a petition to never mention their name again, as we Redskins fans find it very offensive ...) wouldn't even make the headlines here.

good stuff ... we write people off too quick.

didn't know that about Wake, and he's a no good monster, my lord.

Not saying that everything turned out to be a bed of roses for Kurt. You zeroed in on the one example when I said many players got their starts by performing well against scrubs, so don't be too quick to write them off because it was only preseason.

And as of a few yrs back, YES, our locker room is unstable. We have had more "anonymous" quotes about this player, that player, owner preferential treatment, players put in the dog house thus players taking side (with the player or for the coaching staff). Yes, it happens in all locker rooms of all sports, but lately, the stuff that happens inside the Skins' locker room finds it's way into print.

I'm pretty sure you can't sign a player from the practice squad of a team you are playing in the current week.

I don't think he's a horrible player, but he definitely is not a power rusher.  He was basically insurance in the event that Spencer's injury prevented him from playing this year.  I never heard anything bad about him, or anything particularly good about his skills.

and...? how does that effect him..,? he got cut on monday, dude. hes not on their practice squad anymore so that rule wouldnt matter.

but i agree, we shouldnt sign him.

I'll just assume you meant Kirk (unless you're another one that uses "Kurt" just to be "funny"). Problem is Kirk got his chance to start because of the injury to RG3; not because he performed well in the preseason.  So I'm not sure where you're going with that.

Please add some links to these stories that the locker room was unstable because I haven't seen them. There are plenty of theories (that actually make sense when you think about it) that Shanahan is the one that released stories to try and create a chaotic atmosphere or clear his name after being fired. The players have not been shy about voicing their displeasure at times, but the locker rom has been far from a "circus" as you called it.

FTR, I'm not against a workout or something.  But unless he blows the staff away, what's the point?  We already signed Orakpo's replacement, and know what we have in the players that are on the PS.

Sorry about that. It's a habit. I have a cousin named Kurt, so I find myself typing his name instead of our QB.

No he cannot play OLB. It's been said many times before the draft. He's slow and couldn't cover my grandmother in pass coverage.

Again, he's been cut from two practice squads in less then a couple of months.

Considering pass rushers are at a premium I'm certain he would have a home if he were capable as a pass rusher. He can't even stick as a specialist.

Those of you saying give him a shot are basing it solely on the fact that he is a name due to his sexual status and NOT his ability as a player.

Again. It's ridiculous.
