JimmiJo
ES Coverage & Interactive Game Day Thread: Redskins vs Titans 10/19/14 Victory!!! Redskins 19 - 17 Titans Hello everybody, JimmiJo here, soon to link up with my partner Spaceman Spiff. Together we will bring you today's Redskins - Titans game. Nine years in, I've covered some pretty poor seasons, and is another one. It is still October and the playoffs are a fantasy. It's not just that the Redskins are playing poorly, it's that the rest of the division are not. But though a postseason is extremely unlikely, the Redskins, and the fans, could sure use a win. The team has a worse record than at this point last season, and they ended up 3-13. I wrote in this week's Warpath how unthinkable such a thing was at the beginning of the season, when we all thought the team was improved. Today is a winnable game. The Titans, like the Redskins, are not very good. Washington has the home field and a sense of desperation. Run the ball, protect the quarterback, and good things can happen. I predict a win. Talk in a bit. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hello again. It is a very sunny, breezy day here at FedEx Field. Cool as well, low sixties at best. Redskins are rocking Throwbacks today. Dark burgundy, jersey with gold numbers. Redskins-head patch on the shoulders and dull gold pants. Modern helmet. With the wind I feel scared inside for the kicking game. We haven't been great, and their return man is dangerous as hell. Other than that I feel pretty good about this game. The TItans aren't a very good team and the Redskins should be able to take advantage. Keys to victory - run the ball to set up play action and minimize mistakes. This means no turnovers, no gaffes in special teams, and avoid penalties. If Washington is able to do these things they should win. Make sure you follow me on Twitter @Skinscast. More to come... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ While it can be reasonably argued we witnessed one butt-ugly game, it was a win. And this team needed one in the worst way. Not that they didn’t try to give it away. Kirk Cousins did his best by throwing the mindless interception in the first half. And you just knew once he started turning the ball over, it would continue. Coach Jay Gruden realized it and yanked him in favor of Colt McCoy. Cousins left the game after having gone 10-of-16 for 139 yards and the interception. He had a passer rating of 64.3. McCoy went 11-for-12 for 128-yards, one touchdown and no interceptions for a passer rating of 138.9 in relief. He also engineered the final drive that resulted in the field goal and victory. I tweeted in-game that the story of Cousins in Washington has been written, and that the book is closed. Unless and until something miraculous happens, his story will always be that he throws picks when rattled and doesn’t win. I asked Gruden if he had decided the starter for next week. “Not yet,” he said, “but it’s a good sign the way that Colt finished the game.” The way McCoy started the game wasn’t too bad either. On his first pass attempt he hit Pierre Garcon who turned upfield then turned on the jets, racing 70-yards for the touchdown. It was a heck of a debut by the backup, and reminded me of Clinton Portis’ 64-yard touchdown run against Tampa Bay on his first carry for Washington. McCoy completed his first six passes before his one and only incompletion. While Gruden helped his stats and confidence by throwing screens and other short passes, McCoy threw good deep balls, as on DeSean Jackson’s tiptoe catch on the side line, the Jackson catch called back on offsetting penalties, and the ball that drew the pass interference on the final drive. McCoy played within himself and got the win. If Griffin can’t go next week, expect to see McCoy get the start. McCoy aside, it was a poor overall effort by the team. Washington hurt themselves with penalties – a recurring theme. The Redskins committed seven for 50 yards, and many ill-timed. At least twice they extended drives for Tennessee. They were poor again on third down, converting only 3-of-11 for 27%. They were 0-4 in the red zone. They fumbled in addition to the interception. But the Redskins did manage to amass 351 yards, with 100 coming on the ground. They averaged 3.8-yards per carry and 8.1-yards per completion. And best of all, they were playing the Titans. It’s not that Tennessee is bad. They stink. They are horrible. The Titans committed 11 penalties for 96 yards. Some of them at the worst time to extend Washington drives. They also fumbled. They also threw interceptions. Meanwhile they could only muster 236-yards of offense, with just 76 rushing. They matched Washington’s 3-for-11 on third down, and gained less per play; 3.5-yards rushing and 5.9 passing. But as bad as both teams were – one managed to win, and that’s all that matters. The Redskins had to have the W and they got it. For this week at least they don’t have to explain what went wrong and what needs to be done to fix it. With Gruden suggesting there’s a chance Griffin will play, all eyes will look towards Wednesday for the news. Washington travels to Dallas to play on Monday Night Football (what could go wrong?) and no doubt Griffin is eager to play. You have to question whether starting Griffin is the smart move. He hasn’t played in weeks and is coming back from a pretty bad injury. At a minimum timing will probably be off. And if he stinks it up – then what? On the other hand, the coach needs as much film on Griffin as possible. The Redskins possibly end up with a top five draft pick. The kind you use on quarterbacks. Gruden needs to be able to either know Griffin is the future, or have seen enough to know he is not. Ok folks. Enjoyed covering a win for a change. On behalf of Spiff and myself – goodnight. Gibbs Hog Heaven
PLEASE don't embarrass the living piss out of us today boys. That's all. Not bothered about the final score (I have this as a Titans win) as much as seeing a competent team doing their jobs and NOT being a total embarrassment. Being a league wide laughing stock is wearing thin. Hail.

Robinson, Porter, Riley, Long, Moses and Geathers. #Titans QB Jake Locker out, Charlie Whitehurst in Pissed off that Moses and Long are both inactive. Need to get those guys reps soon. The competitive part of the season is basically over. Need to get as many guys who are part of your plans down the road as much experience as possible. Especially with your backup QB in. Get those guys out there to play. If Griffin was playing, I'd probably have a different tune, because I think you'd want to protect your franchise QB with the best guys you've got available on that day. But he's not playing, and I don't give a crap about protecting Cousins or McCoy. That stance has changed, btw, in the last few weeks because of the way that Cousins has played. If he was lighting it up and the team was winning, I'd have a different view. But he's not and they're not, so I couldn't give a damn.
Idaho fan
Our only win of the season thus far was hard to enjoy as it also resulted in our franchise QB being injured early. The season is obviously over as far as playoff hopes are concerned but it would sure be nice to have a solid win that can be enjoyed. Hoping the Skins can play well for this "homecoming" game.
