Naval officials said that the gunman was on the loose. The Navy said on its Twitter feed that three shots were fired at 8:20 a.m. ET at the headquarters of the Naval Sea Systems Command, part of the Washington Navy Yard. About 3,000 people work in the building, the Navy said. They were ordered to stay in place. Security forces entered the building and were hunting for the gunman. WRC, the NBC affiliate in Washington, reported that the shooter had a rifle. SWAT officers, military police, U.S. Capitol police and Washington city police were all responding. The Capitol police said they were stepping up security on the Capitol grounds.

Elessar78
I don't mean to make light of the Navy Yard shootings this morning but the Washington Post reporting is a bit ridiculous: regarding eyewitness accounts of the shooter: “He was a tall black guy,” said her co-worker, Todd Brundage, who is black.Apparently, Todd Brundage is uniquely qualified to make this call. WTF, Post?

visionary
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/09/16/russian-official-blames-navy-yard-shooting-on-american-exceptionalism/ Russian official blames Navy Yard shooting on ‘American exceptionalism’ Alexei Pushkov, head of the foreign affairs committee of Russia’s parliament, seized on the shooting Monday at the Washington Navy Yard to reiterate long-standing Russian criticisms of the United States. "Nobody’s even surprised anymore," he wrote, sarcastically describing the still-ongoing shooting as "A clear confirmation of 'American exceptionalism.'" Pushkov is a frequent critic of all things American and a reliable conduit of the official Kremlin line. His tweets on the Navy Yard shooting, flagged and translated by BuzzFeed's Max Seddon, seemed to echo Russian President Vladimir Putin's New York Times op-ed arguing that "American exceptionalism" is a dangerous force in the world. Dan T.
Often these early reports of more than one shooter turn out to be wrong. But if it is true that more than one was involved, that points heavily away from the disgruntled employee scenario...

Larry
Hopefully, they've at least "contained the fire", so to speak. Nobody else gets hurt. (Including any suspects.) And assume that we'll know more in a day or so, when things transition from "repeating the latest most spectacular rumors" I keep remembering Clancey's "Sum of All Fears", in which the main point of the book was the danger of reacting to overly-sensational, initial, reports.
