I'm Sick of FaceBook. Seriously, sick of seeing those stupid "f" things everywhere

The Curious One

Recommended Posts

I still love facebook. I've had it since grad school- 2004. It didn't start picking up until '06/'07. It's fun for me. I like tagging my friends in posts and laughing about our inside jokes. I like being able to ask questions on my facebook wall that will give me answers from a wide array of people, and being able to connect with friends about 5k races or things like that. I also love posting pictures of my dog sleeping, because he's so FREAKING cute.

Of course, not all of my friends care about what I post and they don't need to see what I post, but I don't care. You can hide people from your news feed. I have friends on there that I hide their posts because they post like 50 times a day. I probably post once a day, sometimes more, sometimes less. I get into facebook moods sometimes.

And honestly, most of my friends aren't sitting there posting, "I just ate a piece of toast" or, "What should I do for dinner tonight?"... there are posts about fitness, animal rights (though I'm way too sensitive about animals to have a bunch of that stuff popping up on my wall), news, pictures, etc. It is a great way to keep in touch with contacts. You never know when you are going to need a favor from someone on your friends list, who may happen to be the owner of a DC club or a deejay that you don't really "know" anymore, but you may want to do business with later in life. It is also a great place for me to keep in contact with teacher friends from JMU and the various schools I have taught at. I like to see what my friends are up to. I like to see what my acquaintances are up to. They give me ideas of things to do with my own life!

Yeah, I could call or text these people, but I am horrible keeping contact via my phone. I will not call people. I hate it. I only call or answer the phone if I absolutely have to. I text my really good friends.

Twitter doesn't do it for me. I don't like seeing a response to someone and then not being able to see what the original tweet was unless I click on that person's name and search their wall. I enjoy reading status conversations. They're funny.

Anyway, obviously I love facebook. I also don't add random people as my friends. I do have some random Redskins fans on there, but some of them I hide their status updates because I don't need "Redskins McRedskinsfan" talking about the Skins 24/7. I'm not that obsessed. Random Redskins fans do not get accepted just because they are Redskins fans, though there are a couple of people I "grandfathered in" when I got rid of a bunch of people a couple of years ago.

Guys, you have so much control with what shows up on your page. I have no game requests showing up, if you don't want to defriend somebody because you are afraid they are going to get pissy, just hide their status updates.

Didn't mean to write a novel on this, but some of the complaints about facebook being made here are easy to fix.

Exactly.

Facebook is just a social media tool.

When a person complains about Facebook, they need to realize they're actually just complaining about people in general. Some people enjoy posting information about their personal lives... WOW, such a new concept. You realize we'd know next to NOTHING about our ancestors throughout thousands of years of human history if we didn't make a written account of what was going on in our daily lives. They're called diaries or journals. Again, Facebook or any social media is just a tool. Humans don't change that much... our tools just become more sophisticated. Of course you get some friends or family members who post whatever dull moment or thought pops into their brain every hour. Mass forms of communication bring out the idiots. I don't blame technology for proving to me that stupid people still exist.

Facebook should in no way take place of real friendships or relationships, but social media sites are amazing new forms of communication if used the right way.

And saying "I can just call or text someone" is kinda interesting too, considering when cell phones first came out the argument against them was that "I don't need to pay $50-$100 a month to carry around a phone when I have one at home. Leave a message on my answering machine!"

Why e-mail when you can write a letter?

Why drive when we have horses?

Etc. Etc.

This is the part of the battle against facebook i get a kick out of.

Zuckerberg sells personal information.. that people voluntarily give him.

There's a sure fire way to make sure it's not used. Don't give it to him.

If it's a requirement to use his amazing website.. well... there's a choice to be made, and regardless, you can control the amount of info he gets.

I don't know why folks get so up in arms because facebook knows through cookies that I like the NFL, and that my page displays ads tailored to me. In fact, I think that's rather convenient. But zuckerberg's website doesn't know my SSN, my address, my mother's maiden name... etc.

Now if it starts capturing keystrokes, well then we've got a new kettle of fish.

I don't have a problem with facebook. I fought for the longest time to avoid joining it. I used Myspace until that got boring and then just didn't want to join yet another social network. Eventually I did, mainly so I could keep in better touch with my father who lives out west. Turns out that it also allows me to keep up with friends that I don't talk to on a daily basis. We are all busy people, I don't have the time to call or text all of my friends every day. Most of them use facebook in some respect. Being able to see what they are doing, what they are talking about is very convenient.

Just be respectful of others and post things that you wouldn't want to be held as public record and you'll be fine. Block family members who's posts annoy you. Easy.

My complaint about facebook is how invasive and pervasive it has become - a commerical for one product says like us on facebook. register at a new site? log in with your facebook ID. "Like us on facebook" on a lot of the sites I frequent. "Look for our Facebook page all over the freakin' place.

I don't want a facebook page. If others want one and like it then that is fine for them. Just don't pummel me with facebook. That's what I'm sick of.

I'll give credit to MissU28 for taking the time to learn facebook and how to make it work for her. That's great. I wonder how many people do that?

Again... why is that Facebook's fault? For being such a good tool that companies use it to promote themselves almost more than their own website? Facebook is an amazing tool for business and it gives consumers so much power and influence with their favorite products and/or companies.

Businesses create Facebook pages for a couple reasons:

- It's free

- It's the BEST way for companies and consumers to interact DIRECTLY and INSTANTLY

I don't think you're seeing the positives and your complaint is a bit silly, because it's not like all of a sudden businesses are going to stop using social media. It's equivalent to a person in 1998 complaining about companies mentioning their website "too much".

I loved FB when I started college (04) and it was a big deal.

Hell, I remember how everyone wanted to get their college ".edu" email account just to sign up for FB.

Did not care for them opening it up to everyone, and like others I think eventually someone or something will take its place.

Don't get carried away with FB and you should be fine. When I was in college a few weeks ago, people were checking FB in the computer lab. Nearly everyone does that nowadays. People were checking it during class. It's okay to get away from FB. I keep it on in the background here, and I check it now and then. It's not really something you can do for 5 or 6 hours to waste time.

Also, Zuckyberg lost 2 billion yesterday. And my Facebook stock is starting to tank :(

I'm active on FB mainly for knowing when birthdays are. I did find tons of compassion through a difficult time from friends and family recently and it really did help. Like any tool, you get roughly what you desire from it if you use it with that intent.

I do agree however, that many folks use FB as a life replacement rather than a tool and thats not healthy for anyone imho.

This is a good term SS; life replacement. I've heard people say that if you're at an event and you're posting what a great time you're having, you're lying. If you were really having a great time you wouldn't interrupt it to post on FB.

Does Facebook Wreck Marriages?

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg changed his status to “married” Saturday and received over one million “likes” from his followers. But the site he founded isn’t always so marriage-friendly. In fact, lawyers say the social network contributes to an increasing number of marriage breakups.

More than a third of divorce filings last year contained the word Facebook, according to a U.K. survey by Divorce Online, a legal services firm. And over 80% of U.S. divorce attorneys say they’ve seen a rise in the number of cases using social networking, according to the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. “I see Facebook issues breaking up marriages all the time,” says Gary Traystman, a divorce attorney in New London, Conn. Of the 15 cases he handles per year where computer history, texts and emails are admitted as evidence, 60% exclusively involve Facebook.

I didn't

Just messing with you all :ols: Seriously, everyone on the news is like The common man won't get any benefit, all the good stock is snatched up by other companies first

Facebook stock was always a 'casino investment'. It's like 2000 again and the dot-com bubble never happened. People will believe in whatever crazy **** they want in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
