A Closer Look at 2011 QB Prospects:Cam Newton

Good. As much as I like the kid (and I do like the kid) I think the skins are better off NOT going QB in the first round.

He and Gabbert are the only ones I worry they may take in the first and now it looks like they won't be there. Good news all the way around.

Interesting observation:

Gil Brandt was standing next to Cam during the presser

Okay, I noticed that too...Brandt even escorted Cam into the presser... I saw that and was like, "is that Gil Brandt"...That is very interesting as Brandt is as old school as it gets...

If he goes early, good. Obviously, I'm a Gabbert guy so that would mean he could slip down to 10. Though I don't think it is likely.

If the Redskins draft this self-absorbed - over-hyped POS in the interest of either selling more jerseys or another quick fix he will prove not a ****ing thing has changed to me.

I won't be surprised in the least if this happens - and if so rot in hell Danny-Boy!!! I hated the McNabb trade when it happened - this (potential) disaster will dwarf it (if we draft him) mark my words.

Cam needs to learn the value of reticence. The media does not like a quarterback who travels off the beaten path. He's a hot ticket story and anything he says will send the media into a feeding frenzy and 9 times out of 10, it'll end with him looking bad. He needs to go out there and just be the typical coach-speak drone that everyone wants to see. He should just take his lumps and say no comment to anything that might be questionable when he's talking to reporters. When he's talking to teams he should just present himself as humble and eager to work and learn. That should be his focus for every answer he gives. I get the feeling he's simply talking too much and it's making him look bad.

I don't like people who refer to themselves in the 3rd person. I quit dating someone because she referred to herself by her name. Total turnoff, and speaks to entitlement and overdeveloped sense of importance of self.

I also didn't like his answer about the laptop thing, saying he wasn't going to talk about the past. Reminds me of unscrupulous politicians.

Newton controls crowd in polished performance By Vic Carucci |

Published: February 26th, 2011 | Tags: Cam Newton, 2011 NFL Scouting Combine

INDIANAPOLIS — Cameras captured his every step through the corridor and into the club-level lounge that serves as the NFL Scouting Combine media center at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Almost on cue, reporters and photographers cleared a path that winded around the massive crowd in front of Podium C, allowing Auburn QB Cam Newton to make as grand an entrance as this event has ever seen. Saturday’s turnout even exceeded the one drawn by last year’s star attraction, Tim Tebow. But that was to be expected, given that a combine-record 715 media credentials, nearly 100 more than last year, had been issued.

Newton seemed fully aware of what this moment meant, that it was the first major opportunity for the NFL world to become more familiar with the player who exploded into college football prominence last season. And he promptly seized control of it.

Newton did something extremely rare for this setting. He read from a prepared statement. In short, he attempted to put his own spin on recent comments he made to Peter King of Sports Illustrated about being an “entertainer and icon,” the latest controversy to dog the Heisman Trophy winner. Newton tried to sound humble but not necessarily apologetic. He wanted to convey that he was misunderstood, although he didn’t say he was misquoted.

Newton also made a clear effort to shift the focus away from what he said and place it on what he plans to do, which, unlike another highly-projected quarterback this year (Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert) and others in previous years, is to fully participate in combine drills Sunday.

Once the session was opened to questions, the grilling began in earnest. Newton heard it all, from character issues stemming from his father allegedly offering him to colleges in exchange for cash and from his reportedly stealing a laptop computer and items from teammates’ lockers. Known for being light on his feet, Newton showed superb skills in not directly addressing those issues and avoiding any notable slips or falls along the way. It was a contrast to the clumsier and more guarded performance of Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett, whose character also has come under heavy scrutiny when he met with the media about 30 minutes earlier.

Like other prospects, Newton was clearly coached on how to answer questions. He seemingly addressed everyone as “Sir,” with a polite smile accompanying almost every utterance.

The media generally gave Newton high marks for how he handled himself and that none of this was too large for him. King, in particular, was impressed with how Newton addressed the “entertainer and icon” comments. But it doesn’t mean he is out of the woods with future NFL employers, who will want an explanation for why he made the comments in the first place.

“Teams want a guy who is only concerned with one thing if they pick him in the first round, being a great football player, and not concerned with being anything else,” King said. “I think he addressed it fine, handled it honorably, but it doesn’t erase it as an issue. It’s still going to be an issue with Cam Newton.”

When I read the story about the assistant coach asking about the QB sneak, I immediately thought of the Shanahans. How funny would it be if Kyle or even Mike asked that question.

Did it say what his explanation was? I had read that he didn't necessarily come out clean after the answer.

What was his answer to the question about him sneaking it in the Championship Game instead of taking a knee?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=6162145

During an interview in Indianapolis at the NFL combine on Thursday night, an unidentified team cracked the poise former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton tried to display while meeting with the media Saturday, a league source said.

According to the source, an NFL assistant coach questioned Newton about why he disobeyed his coach's orders in the BCS National Championship Game. Newton ran a quarterback sneak toward the end of the game rather than take a knee as he was instructed.

Newton was not expecting the NFL to ask him about the incident and did not have a favorable reaction, according to league sources. He got defensive, sources said.

Here's a link to the presser see for yourself if/when he gets flustered:

http://thefinsiders.com/blog/cam-newton-video-nfl-combine-press-conference/

I didn't notice any real "fluster" on Newton's part, but he did, on multiple occasions, sidestep or refuse to answer questions about "his past." I think the "kneeldown sneak" question fell into this category.

I thought he got flustered Thursday night during a personal interview, not the actual press conference today.

Yeah that was my understanding as well. He's refused to talk about the laptop and cheating incidents all year. He shouldn't talk about them now, that's for sure. Nothing good can come of him doing so and there are no satisfactory answers he can give. His best move is to just continue avoiding the subject.

Just had a wild thought.

I found out last year that Al Davis and Gil Brandt are friends and then Brandt actually helped Davis and the Raiders w/ their last draft.

Now I see Brandt w/ Newton at the podium and I think of Brandt's Al Davis connection knowing Al Davis craziness and boldness:

How crazy would it be for Al Davis to trade up to draft Cam Newton?

Unless he wants to move him to receiver or running back, he's set at QB with Campbell and Gradkowski. I'm not putting it past him, but I would be VERY surprised if it happened.

Dunno, man. From the "Tweets from Shanny presser at Combine" thread:

Rich_Campbell Rich Campbell

Shanahan preaching the importance of character.

Rich_Campbell Rich Campbell

Shanahan said the key for Newton is the background check.

Gotta say....I'm real proud of our coach to say that

The presser and answers he gave here:

http://thefinsiders.com/blog/cam-newton-video-nfl-combine-press-conference/

Demonstrate that my questions about this man are real. Who is he to avoid questions about his past with the rap sheets he's got? Who is this man to speak about himself in the third person? How screwed up in his head to do that?

After all that we get word that his workout went poorly.

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/02/27/cams-coach-says-newton-didnt-ace-his-combine-test/

"A veteran scout candidly told us earlier today that Cam Newton looked “terrible” during his Scouting Combine workout"

So in short everything I've been saying here in this thread about the questions you have to have about him on and off the field are still there and if you got that many strikes and negatives about you how could you say he's worth our #10 pick? I rest my case...hell no to Cam Newton

Did you even watch the press conference. At the 10 minute mark Cam said he made mistakes at Florida. He said if he could do it all over again he wouldn't make the same mistakes. He said, now, he wouldn't do that because he knows what happens if you do the things he did at Florida. I don't know what more you want him to say. He admitted he made mistakes and said he's learned from them.

And then 1 minute later some idiot asked the very same question again. That's when he said what he did about the past is in the past and he's going to focus on the future. He didn't dodge the question about his past. He had already talked about it for 3 minutes so why keep going over and over the same thing.

I'm hearing, also that the passing drills didn't go well. He killed it so far as broad jump, 40 time and other drills.

You are so obsessed with worry that Cam's will be the next Redskin's quarterback. For heaven's sake, relax. Cam will not be available at the #10 spot and MS is not going to trade up.
