JLC Twitter: Danny Smith possibly to the Broncos??

I'm in the minority as I liked Coach Danny. I hope he stays. I had the pleasure of meeting him and he's truly a good guy. Our ST were always up there in KO and Punt return defense and that is certainly what he preaches. Our kicking (FG/P) was not good but I do not feel that was Coach Danny's doing, we just did not have a good punter nor kicker, IMHO.

I don't think it's a minority who like Danny. At the very least it's split, but I would even say the majority like him. It's just negative thinking is usually vocalized much more, so those who don't like him express it more which makes it seem like they're so many.

I think Danny’s a hard worker who knows a lot about the game, and he probably saved Zorn from looking even worse than he did on occasion. But I gotta say that the blocks in the back and other boneheaded penalties that seemed to negate about half of Brandon Banks’ quality returns in 2010 got awfully tiresome. No team could shut Banks down the way we could. I don’t know whether those issues were Danny’s fault, but either way I got good and tired of that happening.

That's the problem when you are continuously shuffling new players in because you are getting injuries up the line. I know one was on Reilly, who up to that point was inactive.

We haven't blocked a punt in years. Also on about half the field goal attempts it doesn't look like we are sending anyone to try and block the kick. Never understood that. Add that to the production of the Kickers and Punters during his time here, and I have no worries about him leaving.

I like Smith, but there are better ST coords. Unfortunately, I don't know of any that are available. Those of you wishing him to be gone don't seem to be acknowledging the possibility that not many good ones are available, and the possibility the next one we bring in could be significantly worse. You all seem to want him gone w/o realizing the consequences.

But Shanny said previously he wants to retain all his coaches, so I'm betting the team is in talks on a contract extension.

I was a big Danny Smith hater, but I've been pondering it.

Our kicking teams, both covering and returning, were amazing in the beginning of this year. As the year went (read: dragged) on, I thought, "Wow, Smith sucks. He's ruined these awesome teams."

Then I got to looking at the depth chart and realized that even a third-string teams player was starting at cornerback at the last game of the season. Our teams went downhill because anyone who was on teams was either playing too much on the field or was banged up altogether.

Smith may not need to go, but if other teams can afford a kickoff specialist roster spot, then we MUST get a kicker scout specialist. We need someone whose *ONLY* job is to find us the right kicker and the right punter. Our kickers have been atrocious since John Hall pre-injury.

Danny Smith is a great coach. It's amazing Redskins fans dislike him so much. He can only work with what he's given.

Losing him would really stink.

What would lead us to believe Danny Smith got any LESS funding from Snyder than anyone else on the team? We gave the guy a 6th round pick for a punter, we see how that worked out.

One line of defense that will never work on this team for coaching - "I wasnt given the tools to succeed" - Snyder has an open checkbook. If at any time Smith went up the chain and asked for funding for particular player, you can damn well guarantee, his wish would be granted. We dont know of any real case where any coach hasnt gotten their wish granted, frankly. Not saying thats right or wrong, but it is what it is.

coverage units have been fantastic thats why he is so sought after. we have been in the top 5 for years in coverage. It's not our fault that the kickers and punters have been **** once they got here and when they leave, they have been god-like

Not really. Akers came and went and did well, but who else? Like I said, our kicker scouting is atrocious. They probably just take a kicker's Madden score, multiply it by how many missed field goals he had in a season, and whoever has the highest result wins the job.

It's crazy that people who know nothing about coaching special teams have such strong opinions about the current coach.

jnhay, come on. Nobody on here not named Enter Apothesis or KDawg knows a damned thing about football, maybe ASF, but that doesn't stop people from talking about how bad professionals are. :)

I guess I'm in the middle on this one. I don't really care if he stays or goes. Our STs haven't been awesome and they haven't sucked either.

I figure, we'll get someone else in here and they'll either be great, or they'll be really really awful.

Smith actually solidified a unit that was REALLY terrible, and I think most people are forgetting that. But, I think after that, it just kind of stayed where it was, we didn't get a ton better or worse, and something can be said for the consistency he brought the team.

Disagree.

What suffers when you blow your load and hand out contracts to unworthy players? Depth and special teams.

I would put Durant Brooks' failure on Smith, but to be honest, he was as good of a punting prospect as has come out of college in a while. Very well heralded.

My two biggest gripes with Smith were that he let ARE return punts (but really, if ARE wasn't returning punts, what was he here for?) for far too long and that he can't find a punter that is even average. Outside of that, he's a very good, knowledgeable coach in many aspects of the game, including clock management which we've seen multiple times throughout the years.

I don't think that he had anything to do with ARE returning punts. A signature signing not doing one of the big things that he was signed for? Yeah right. Not under Snyder pre-Allen/Shanahanananan. No way no how.

I know Danny Smith personally. I would be sad to see him go.

But to see how Skins fan treat him makes me feel like he should go to a place where he is respected.

If you only knew why Teams have been so up and down, you probably would want him to stay.

I'm no special teams evaluator, but I feel overall this would be a loss for our team, not a gain. Smith is highly regarded within the NFL, and it seems like blue chip players like Daniels as well as stars like Banks are behind the guy. Why make one more hole to fill, we need some consistency throughout, and that means the coaching staff as much as possible too.

Yeah. But it bothers me here because we're all EXTRA dumb when it comes to coaches, and to make it even worse he's a special teams coach! Who the hell is paying attention enough to know more than "yay, he ran far!" or "yay we didn't let him run far!"

You sound like you know something, so please elaborate.

It seems kind of silly to blame people for making uninformed comments and at the same time say that if they knew what you know then they would think differently.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to get at.

He was basically forced to put ARE out there as long as possible. In the aspects he had control of, he was a darn good coach.
