I'm fine with both trades, as mentioned they made the best of a horrible situation.  Interested to see what happens with Chris Paul.  Why any fan would not want a complete rebuild is puzzing to say the least. We've already seen what 30 wins nets you, the lottery but not high enough to land a real franchise changing player in the vast majority of cases.  The only way to win consistently is to draft a true star and they are not usually around at pick 8.

this is silliness.
beal was in a ridiculous 251 mil, with 200 left, only no trade clause in the NBA. For a good but not, and never will be, great player.

KP has awful health history and has a player opt in. The other option was he walked with nothing and hit the open market tomorrow. I’m sure he wanted his 36 mil for the year but he had all the leverage to walk away from a team doing a rebuild and be a free agent.

the wizards had no leverage in either situation and managed to dump Beal and get *something* in return for a player that wouldn’t be on the team tomorrow.

This is the exact kind of deal Shep or EG GM could never pull off.

The good news is that Clips gave their pick and are indicating a need for a guard given the interest in Brogdon before they got worried about his medicals. The rumor is they cooled off on CP3 once they got wind that Westbrook was less likely to resign for the minimum if CP3 came aboard. Jones is a perfect guy to send to the Clips for Morris or Covington and the 30th pick. Jones is clearly a starting level PG but can still come off the bench and allow Russ to stay and start

Nah, we're getting pillaged.  These are horrendously lopsided trades that any GM in the first year of their contract could find.  The contenders aren't hunting for Tius Joneses, they're taking advantage of a desperate rebuilding team to add all stars on contracts they couldn't afford in FA to stack the deck, while giving up virtually none of their most important players/picks.  We're having a going out of business sale and two contenders just grabbed our two best assets and improved their chances at winning a championship while giving up little in exchange.  In return we've netted basically nothing of long term value. A bench point guard and a bunch of seconds is nothing.  Not even getting the symbolic victory of a single first round pick is kind of embarrassing.

Porzingis didn't have Beal leverage.  If he opted out, he was going to have trouble finding a contender who could have paid him 36 million.  Opting in and getting us to trade him to a contender was his best option by far.  It sounds more like he wanted to go to the Celtics and we accommodated him and didn't worry about maximizing the return we could get from shopping him to multiple teams.

We'll still be able to move some of these little pieces for marginal returns, but the cold math is we just traded a 3.4 VORP player for a 1 VORP player and a 35th pick.  These are useless asset accumulations for a rebuilding team.

But I'm not mad about this situation in context, even though these are embarrassing deals that will live forever in infamy for our fanbase if we don't turn the corner in the next few years.  Piling up high value assets isn't the point of all of these trades, nor is it even possible given the circumstances.  One point is to show players we will do right by them (that we're chumps).  Could be useful in negotiating extensions in some nebulous future.  And the main point is to tear the roster down so we will lead the league in losses next season.  Getting back good players in exchange for that hampers that goal, and contenders don't have draft picks worth a damn to a rebuilding team.

All of the real value from our rebuild will come from losing a ton of games the next few seasons and finishing with very high draft picks.  That's the whole game for us.  Watching a full blown tank is going to suck, and it might not work, but we're going to end up with some kind of top three or four pick that the team will sell us on as the future.

You're contradicting yourself all over the place here.

You really just laid out the issue.  The contenders are taking advantage of a desperate rebuilding team.  The Wizards are having a going out of business sale.  You can't have a Bed Bath and Beyond firesale and expect people to pay top dollar for whatever you're selling, it doesn't make sense.

Do the reverse.  Pretend you're a GM for a contending team and you need a guy like Beal or a guy like KP and you know the Wizards just hired guys specifically charged with the task of rebuilding a moribund franchise from the ground up.

Are you rushing to give them a first round pick?  You're lying if you say yes.

Beal's albatross was the no trade clause and KP's albatross was the injury history.  It would take idiocy on the part of a contender to flip them for high value assets.  The central point is to get players off your team who have no long term future with you for decent value and start losing in copious amounts.  They've done that imo.

Super fine with everything going on and accepting of the pennies on the dollar return in total. Got to get down to that rotted foundation and fix it before building back up.

Hopefully they can flip CP3 quickly and get some kind of sign and trade via Kuz too if another team wants to give him a bigger deal.

There isn’t a person reading this that couldn’t personally negotiate a trade sending Beal or Porzingas for second round picks. Wizards have traded talent to contending teams in exchange for bags of mulch. I’m glad they’re rebuilding but acting like the new front office is off to a great start is premature.

You know as well as anyone that this front office will be judged on what it can draft and develop instead of the bags of mulch received for Beal and KP.

The Wiz collected draft assets, have cap space this year, have a big trade exception, and a few potential expiring contracts that could be moved today or at the trade deadline. These are not high quality assets they've had to move given the NTC and the ability for KP to simply opt out last night.

They had a pick 5 slots higher. Oh no!! Jones + 35th in this years draft is better than Morris and the 30th.

Also, they may have preferred the 35th in this years deep draft than a late first in next years.

C’mon. You know they would rather have the guy under team control for four years than someone who could bolt after one year. Or has that changed recently? Second rounders don’t get guaranteed contracts these days, do they?

Fun fact: Win shares for the 30th pick over the last 10 years is 120.6.

Win shares for the 35th pick is 37.7.

If they didn’t get a deal done last night and Prozingis opted out, could they have then done a sign and trade? Windhorst makes it sound like they couldn’t. I’m not sure I understand why not. Can’t they sign and trade Kuzma? Why would this be different?

What do we even have at this point on the roster? It looks like we pick #8, #42 and #57 ... but I don't follow the team closely, can someone provide our current roster? How many picks from recent years are still around?

They have their last 3 first rounders: Davis, Kispert, Deni.

Yeah, they number 57 because the original 57 and 58 were forfeited. They just obtained 35 and likely 52.

So we could go into the draft with #8, #35, #42, #52 and #57? I can't seem to find any updates on the draft capital post trades anywhere. Not that those 2nds matter a whole lot, but whatever, we are going to need bodies.
