MartinC
Sorry, but that is a widely out-dated notion that goes back to the 70's and 80's. In the 90's, the German federation decided to modify the way they played the game, from the grass-roots up. The League followed suit. Now you have teams that play good, attractive soccer. They don't depend on simply out-muscling teams and playing very direct (ahem, Stoke City, ahem). I played in Germany back in the early 80's for a few months on an extended trial with a club over there. I can tell you that even then German football was not close to as physical as English football and put far more emphasis on technical ability than physical. I was a goalkeeper and was amazed by the lack of physical challenge I got when I came for crosses or set pieces for example. I first played in Germany (in 82 I think) in an U18 tournament - I was playing for Preston's U18s and there were teams from Germany and Italy also taking part. We were a pretty average U18 team (we lost 5-0 to Man U's U18's just before went out) but we won that tournament pretty easily. We won it because we out worked and out fought the opposition (if I do say so myself I also had a really good set of matches which is how I got the invite to go out for that extended trial - there was a 21 year old German nurse called Brigitte involved in that decision as well but thats another story ....) The emphasis in English junior football was about size, power, fitness and 'getting results'. In Europe it was about technique, passing and being comfortable in possession. Not a great deal has changed ....

DCranon21
So now the Reds are down 2-1 to West Brom at Old Trafford. It's in the 90th minute and it doesn't look like they will get the tie. FML is it real this season?

JoeWolf990
Rio Ferdinand may have to retire after that performance. It looked like WBA was isolating him. How awful was he? Sessenghon, Morgan Amalfitano, and Saido Berahino were brilliant. Also, LOL at City. What an awful goal to concede to lose a match. HAHAHA

Talk about endearing yourself to your players and fans David Moyes Football GENIUS! Hail. *Edit* If you're lacking 5 or 6 World Class players, why is your only signing a defensive midfielder from Belgium who isn't anywhere NEAR that standard. And one who you screwed up and ended up paying more for after YOU were in charge when the buy out clause was inserted in the contract. You seriously couldn't make up whats going on there. LOVE IT! Funny considering we were well on our way to advancing over the Real madrid until the red card and could have made a good run honestly. Probably not to the finals as Dortmund probably would have knocked them off in the semis though. The idea that we don't have the talent to win is ridiculous though. I would have liked to have some transfers like Ozil and such but this idea that we aren't good enough is just stupid. No sir you haven't been good enough. RVP and revitalized Rooney are at the top of their games right now and that alone would win you some matches. Like I said he won't make it to November at this rate. He realizes he's over his head but he's putting it on others.
MartinC
Moyes just doesnt have the talent at United that he needs to win. Making comments about his players will just speed up the process of them shutting him out. Slamming your players in the press - even by implication - is a bad idea in just about any circumstances. Defende them in public tear them a new one in the sanctity of the dressing room or if you REALLY want to single someone out (I'm looking at you Rio) do it in private. That said I don't think Utd have a very talented squad overall. They lack quality especially in midfield. What saves them is they have the two best forwards in the Premier League (or at least two who would be in that conversation).
JoeWolf990
I'll take that W.indeed. Sadly, another massacre will happen now with Ramsey scoring. Moyes just doesnt have the talent at United that he needs to win. Making comments about his players will just speed up the process of them shutting him out. In fairness he said they dont have the title to win Champions League... and he is right. SHouldnt have said it, mind you, but he is right. Fergie really left Moyes with crap. A lot of United fans dont want to admit that but outside of RVP, there isnt a world class player on that team. Closest being Rooney and Carrick but for some reason Fergie and now Moyes thinks he can play the #10 position. He cant. Then again, give Moyes money and he spends £27 million on Fellaini, lol. (thank goodness Arsenal did not sign him) Its funny watching United fans lose their minds over Moyes though. Such an entitled and unrealistic fanbase. You guys deserve this, even though I still believe Moyes will turn it around.

MartinC
Congrats to Liverpool Ladies on winning the League. Campione Mighty Reds! (Girls.). Hail. Another good win for your lads again today with Suarez scoring twice (though they were both tap ins). Not a great performance though against a Sunderland team that's lost right now - but 3 points and a very good start to the season. It's pretty wide open at the top this year with the fancied teams all having their struggles.
Gibbs Hog Heaven
Thanks matey. Two games clear of United without playing particularly well. HAPPILY take that. Just a pity we weren't clinical through the week as they where MORE than there for the taking. Nice understanding developing between Sturridge and Suarez. Love him or hate him, and i still wouldn't shed a tear if he left in January, the dude sure does produce. Don't get the change in formation though. That needs to end. Oh yeah, Henderson's still *****! Hail. Edited September 29, 2013 by Gibbs Hog Heaven

I think the line up is the best they can play with injuries they have. At least some Liverpool fan can realize just how important Glen Johnson is to this team. Gibbs Hog Heaven
No doubt Johnson's important. That's never been in question. JoeWolf990
Isnt it essentially the same squad?they werent that talented last year. City fell apart (they scored 66 goals last year which was like 5th best in the league, just shocking). Chelsea were young and fell apart. Arsenal were in transition again. RVP won the league for them by January by being the best player in the league and scoring at will. Edited September 29, 2013 by JoeWolf990
Old Bay
I was playing for Preston's U18s ... I'd like to hear more of your career if you're inclined to tell it. MartinC
Isnt it essentially the same squad? Yep - and they lacked quality last year as well. Why do you think they had to talk Scholes out of retirement? They won the title with some smoke and mirrors, having RVP play out of his skin (goals cover up a multitude of other problems) and the other challengers imploding. Credit Fergie as well - I never liked him as a person but he got the absolute best out of his players and coaching staff - his reputation and presence was worth points in itself. MartinC
I'd like to hear more of your career if you're inclined to tell it. Blackburn with a good win, 3-1. Bowyer is a breath of fresh air as manager. I think calling it a 'career' is being very kind I played at school like all kids do starting at junior school and then into High School. I played in goal - always did from being a toddler. When my Dad used to kick a ball at me in the garden apparently I did not kick it back I dived on it .... I got picked for the School District team and was scouted there by the local club which was Preston. After a trial match I was signed to what were called 'school boy forms' when I was 14 - back then pro clubs could not sign kids before they were 14. This 'contract' essentially meant I was part of their youth set up, got training and some medical benefits but no money and they could tell me when and where I played. It was not a "pro" contract (i.e one with actual wages and a fixed term). I was in that youth set up until I was 16 and I did well to last that long, there were about 20 kids in the set up at any time but we kids came and went all the time as they pruned out the ones who had no chance of making it. Quick story about how bad English coaching was back then - Preston were a 2nd Division team (so Championship in todays language). We had no specialist goalkeeper coach. There were 2 'keepers in the youth set up and we were just sent off to work with each other after we had done the running until they needed us for set pieces or shooting practice. The U18s and A team normally used to train at Preston Barracks (British Army base) not Deepdale and I can recall some nights us doing shooting practice with no nets in the goals just like we were playing on the park Anyway when I was 16 They offered me a YTS contract. Now this will make you laugh ....It used to be called becoming an apprentice, 2 years when you were training full time but not a full pro - sort of a stepping stone between the youth set up and the senior squad. They actually started paying you now! Big time! Thing was the Government at the time (early 80's now) brought this scheme in where employers could offer 16 to 18 years olds a job with training attached (though the quality of the training varied immensely) and the Government paid the wages. Football clubs grabbed hold of it and used that to subsidise their playing staff. £30 a week was the offer. I cancelled the Ferrari. I actually turned the offer down because my Dad had been a pro but had his career cut short with a knee injury in the late 50's. Back then an ACL and that was that. He was keen I got an education and I was bright enough to have options so I went on to College to do A Levels but carried on playing for Preston 'non contract'. I playing in the U18 team and A teams mainly. Back then Preston had 3 senior teams 1st, 2nd and 'A'. The A team was made up of the players from the YTS lads, some pros who were coming back from injury, had really pissed off the manager or who were flat useless and the odd trialiist..I played 3 or 4 reserve team games as well (Pontin's Central League no less). I understand clubs don't even have reserve teams today - they have development teams which are mainly U25's. Anyway at 18 I was not offered a pro contract - to no great surprise - and I was a free agent. I did not fancy University although I had a place lined up and had just come back from that youth tournament in Germany I mentioned earlier. I had met this really friendly German Nurse while out there and I had an offer of a trail from a scout who had seen me play so .....I went out for 3 months playing for Bochum. Had a great time - some of which was football related .... but did not get offered a deal. UEFA bringing in rules about maximum numbers of non national players you could have did not help (this was all pre Bosman and freedom of labour etc). When I came back to England I had an offer of trial from Bolton but I had worked out by then I would never make a real career out of it. So I got a real job and started playing non League for Leyland Motors who were semi pro (North West Counties League). I played for them mainly because I also played cricket (look it up) for Leyland Motors were I was also being paid (my first full time job I was on £35 a week and I was making about £20 a week from sport part time along side this - back then, that was still bugger all ). The season overlapped so the two cubs used to have to agree who had me for what matches, I was never consulted but I always imagined the loser in the meetings got me I had about 4 season with Leyland. It was about this time though (84 or 85) I saw an advert in the local paper for a start up American football team called Preston Pirates and thought I fancy a go at that .....the picture in my profile is me playing QB for them and I ended up being their OC and then HC. So I packed in semi serious football for football! I played for a few years on Sunday mornings mainly for Preston Fire Station (mate of mate and I was their ringer) and had a GREAT time. Like I said, i would not really call it a career as such ..... Edited October 1, 2013 by MartinC
