Ex-NPR Editor In Child Porn Bust

Second time this month a D.C. media figure is nabbed on federal rap

FEBRUARY 26--For the second time this month, a Washington, D.C. media figure has been charged with possession of child pornography. David Malakoff, who until recently worked as National Public Radio's science editor and an on-air correspondent, was named in a felony criminal information filed Tuesday. The information, a copy of which you'll find below, offers few details about the 46-year-old Malakoff's alleged criminal activity, except to note that he possessed the illicit material between April and June 2008 (Malakoff resigned from his job last June, according to NPR spokesperson Anna Christopher). The Department of Justice's filing of an information--as opposed to a criminal complaint or indictment--often indicates that a defendant has agreed to plead guilty to charges. Malakoff, an Alexandria, Virginia resident, worked from NPR's Washington headquarters. The felony charge against him was filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, possibly indicating that the child porn was recovered from his NPR office, and not his home, which is in a different judicial district. Malakoff's lawyer, Danny Onorato, declined to discuss details of the case. Malakoff did not return a message sent to him via his Facebook account.

I just had the worst night. All these guys come busting into my house, rip my computer off the wall, and threw me and it into this unmarked van. Luckily, last week was pledge week so I could afford bail.

No, I don't know him although my contact at the national science desk also has a Russian name. Mostly, I do things with the local NPR here in DC.

Glad they got the bum.

This does go towards answering the question whether porn is actually art though. Maybe porn isn't an art, but a science afterall. :silly:

I've been averaging about twice a month on a weekly newsmag called Metro Connection on WAMU 88.5 fm. I occassionally contribute to the local Morning Edition, but that is a little more random. I do some other stuff, but it's behind the scenes and not onair.

I'll be on this week with a commentary. Soon to be up a report on Tuscana West and a profile on Garrett Park, MD.

i would ask for your name so i could know its you when you come on but i'm not trying to scare you away or anything

Thanks. I've pretty much blown my psedonymity here. :cool2:

but just in case I'll PM you my name and a link or two. I've now been doing it for a few years, but I still think it is a really cool gig. ES has played a big role, both directly ... My Redskins preseason fan feature will always have a special place for me and indirectly through criticism and support.

Here's that piece... http://wamu.org/audio/mc/07/08/m1070810-17346.ram

Oddly enough, I used to feel almost the same way about NPR as AAA does. And then a strange thing happened-I took the time to actually listen to them...OK, only after Mrs. 06 all but challenged my manhood, but I digress. :) Turns out they're not nearly as left leaning as the right would have us believe. They do an excellent job of providing in-depth coverage and they really do give both sides of the issues. In short, listening to NPR gives one the "why" as well as the "what".

His real name or his "radio name"? Or do they bother to do that on NPR? I used to be friends with a guy who DJ'd on a Mix station part-time. I used to tell him his radio name could double as a porn name!
