2018 Away Games/Road Trips/ Meet ups

Is it too early to start talking about the road trip to away games everyone is taking this year? I was between Arizona, Tampa and NOLA and just booked my trip AZ to see Alex Smith in week 1 before the home opener.

Still thinking about doing Tampa but excited to hit AZ and see the area and stadium. Hoping to meet up and tailgate before with some people in the desert!

Where is everyone going?

I had such a good time (other than the result) at the NOLA game last year that I’m going again this year. The Bourbon Street takeover the night before the game was a great experience and the NOLA fans I sat next to were very hospitable. All around a great experience. Can’t wait to try it again this year on a Monday night!

I'd love to take the 14 hour trip straight south to Az...the scenery on the drive is amazing..

I am considering the opener in AZ.  Last time I went down there to see the 'Skins, the Cards still played at ASU. It was 2005....I believe it was Game 2 of "5 in a row or we don't go" campaign.  Antonio Brown blew a kiss to the sideline on his way to taking one to the house and the 'Skins players exited the field to a "We Want Dallas" chant.

Well I live in Phoenix so you can count me in for the Cardinals game :-)

Have you been to a Redskins game there or Cardinals one?  Trying to gauge if that venue will be one of the more fun ones to check out a road game.  I figure it being an opener that would add some buzz to the game.

I've never been to a game in Arizona, but from what I've read from some that have, there is usually a very large Redskin fan contingent there when Washington comes to town.

Many of them Native Americans who make the Southwest U.S. their home.

Thanks for the input.  Wonder on the same topic if the typical name protest that you hear about there is easy to avoid or do you get harassed a little if you were Redskins garb near the stadium.

I don't know about protests. From what I've read most Native Americans are big Redskin boosters, hence the large crowds at Arizona Stadium.

I recall reading about it in one of the recent games there.    But no big deal the more I think about it.

Yep - I went to game we had there in 2016. Its a good stadium with good parking and access - but its way North of Phoenix. You could stay in Scottsdale and have some fun on the Saturday - lot of resort style hotels up in that part of the Phoenix if budget is not an issue or some cheaper options further towards the City. Depending where you are in Scottsdale you would be in the right side of Phoenix to get to the stadium which is in Glendale.

Not sure about what Redskins tailgating there is at the stadium though.

We have a couple of native Indian tribes in the area. I live in Maricopa County and we have a reservation here, more out West of us and some to the North. If you see a Casino here thats a clue ...

I did not see a noticeable presence in any group at the game I went to. But I didn't spend a lot of time outside the stadium.

Been to the past two games there. There are hotels in Glendale that you can walk to the stadium from. Highly recommend.

Glendale is pretty centrally located, and you can get to Phoenix or Scottsdale easily. If you’re a golfer, bring your sticks. Amazing courses throughout the entire area.

Both years there were big meet and greet parties at local establishments that were VERY well attended. If you go, get there plenty early if you want to get a seat. Tons of Skins fans in the area, many of them Native Americans. Actually saw a young lad at the outlet mall next to the stadium, wearing a t-shirt from his local high school whose nickname was Redskins also. Did not see a single protest either game I went to.

Finally, they have a huge lawn outside the stadium where tailgaters set up, but if you’d prefer, they fence off the area outside the stadium and have makeshift bars, with giant screen TV’s, couches and the like, as well as food trucks, open all around the outside before they actually open the stadium doors. One of my favorite places I’ve watched the Skins. Enjoy.

Centrally located for what :-) Its NW of Phoenix, about a 30 minute drive with reasonable traffic.

If if it’s just for a night then those hotels local to the stadium sound like a plan but if you can do a couple of nights I’d stay over in Scottsdale and chill. As you say plenty of really good golf (not that I play).

I found it easy to get to downtown Phoenix or Scottsdale in a half hour or so. There were also plenty of places to eat/drink near there, and in downtown Glendale about 10 minutes away.

Phoenix is such a huge sprawl, seemed like it took at least a half hour to get anywhere.

Very true. I live in Chandler which is South East of Phoenix and guess what we are about 30 minutes from downtown :-) Not that we go often plenty of really good places to eat and be in Chandler.

Glendale is not a place anyone in the Phoenix area with a choice would head for the evening though. Though I’m sure there places you can eat/drink which are fine.

Thanks for the advice.  I elected to do one day in Scottsdale then switch to Glendale.   Now I just have to keep my fingers crossed that a hurricane doesn't derail it all.  I am coming from South Florida and that's the heat of the hurricane season.
