You mean Mazda don’t spend more on marketing cross overs than sedans in the US? I’d be stunned if that’s not the case.

Fair to argue if that spend is about brand choice within a segment versus demand creation though.

Marketing can take nearly infinite forms but it absolutely takes a great deal more of incentives (rebates/dealer cash/special financing) to stimulate Mazda 6/3 sales than crossover sales.

A great deal more.

No argument there. I totally understand my views here are FAR from mainstream.

Anybody remember about a year ago when Ford was going to build a factory for cars in Mexico and convert the plant in the US to build trucks? Trump went ballistic with his typical mindless blather (even though nobody was losing his job), so Ford nixed the Mexico plant. Now the same plant is presumably being converted anyway, while any ideas about continuing low margin cars are being scrapped. Maga....

Still cheaper than a couple years back. Call me when gas passes 3 bucks and starts creeping to 4.

What's your number? $3.70+ everywhere around here (southern California).

I can't remember the last time it was under $3.00.

Damn. Was still 2.65 the last time I got gas. Yeah 3.70 nationwide seems like something that would change minds. If I was in the market then MPGs would be even more important.

I drive an F-350 diesel.  :(

F-150 (2000.  80K miles)

Explorer (2004 105K miles)

Both of them, I'm the only owner and driver.

I'd been casually wondering about the next car.  And yeah, I'd been thinking that the next one should be a car.  And Ford has a lot of loyalty, from me.  Way back to fond memories of my Mustang, and the family Pinto, when I was in high school.

To me this is a smart move on Ford’s part. Profit margins on SUVs, trucks, and crossovers are much higher than sedans. That’s where the bulk of their sales were already. So this will free up more manufacturing resources to focus on the vehicles that make them the most money.

Gotta diversify your portfolio.

Didn't that car kill everyone?

My dad's first car was a Ford Maverick.  He's also owned a Gran Torino, Country Squire Wagon, Granada, Explorer, Ranger and Econoline Van.

He now owns a Honda CRV and Chevy C71 Pickup and my mom has Toyota Sienna.  My niece has a RAV4 and my sister a CX5.

My first 3 cars were Fords.   2 Escorts and Tempo.

Long-remembered, second-hand, anecdotal information.  But I remember Dad telling me that the total number of people killed in Pinto gas tank fires was eight.  Nationwide, in their entire run.

Which was a lot higher than the typical rate.  Supposedly, if Pintos had caught fire at the national average rate, those eight deaths would have been more like one and a quarter.  But it's still a case of a minuscule number, contrasted against an even more minuscule number.

It’s been 2.20-2.40 for a long time here.

With kids sedans suck. Especially young kids that require bulky things.

Stollers, travel cribs, bikes, tents, corn hike boards, grilling and other camping gear....

im glad I got rid of my genesis sedan for a full size crew cab truck.

Not to mention towing things and yard work.

My wife is in the crossover business for the same reason. Plus the extra clearance helps since she must get to work in the snow, no excuses.

Plus with a third row of seating, albeit sort of a crappy row, we can take our two kids and they can each bring a friend and go places.

Driving dynamics arent a factor factor for us anymore and gas mileage only for my wife’s vehicle.

When things settle down I’ll buy a used two seater manual to get my driving dynamics kicks.

I dont see us owning a sedan again until the kids are off on their own and we retire.

I talked the parents into the explorer because of seating.

At the time, I was the driver for Mom and Dad,  Mom insisted on the front seat, (part of her dominance game over Dad), which meant Dad was in the back seat.

Mom had been driving the family Saturn.  But it was too low for her.  Like sitting on a pillow on the ground.  Getting in and out of the car was too hard on her arthritic knees.  Whereas my F-150 was comfortable for her, once she got in it, but it was too high for her.  I had to give her a boost, to get in.

I needed a "family vehicle" where the seat was at the height of mom's butt, when she was standing.  And where a 6' 5" guy could sit in the back seat for the two hour drive to Disney.

Had to be a SUV or minivan, and Mom said "no minivan".  (For no rational reason that I could see.)

I dont think i will own a sedan again until i retire

Just doesnt fit with my lifestyle.  Towing, yardwork, hauling kids... i would like to have a sedan again at some point.  Its a life goal to own a luxury sedan at some point, something ridiculously nice...

Also, putting a kid into a car seat in a truck/suv/crossover is so much easier than a sedan.

I loved my genesis, and i loved my civic and the other smaller cars i've owned over my life. But they're not practical if you own a house and have kids.

The people I know with sedans, always have another car they use to haul their family around (and it's a SUV/Crossover type)

We're done with the packing the kids around thing these days,(college and they both have their own cars anyway),so we're looking to get a commuter car sometime in the future. Nice gas mileage kind of a small car so the wife doesn't have to pay as much for gas on her trips to and from work. We'll keep our two trucks,(still have that 2001 Ford Ranger),for the camping and to help sustain our never ending home projects. ;)
