Clinton takes on Trump: 'America never stopped being great'

Less than an hour after her commanding win in South Carolina, Hillary Clinton took the stage and declared the presidential race is going national. And that meant going directly after Donald Trump.

"Despite what you hear, we don't need to make America great again. America has never stopped being great. But we do need to make America whole again. Instead of building walls, we need to be tearing down barriers," Clinton said.

Dedicating her victory to everyone "the parents and teachers of rural South Carolina” to the pastors she met with on the trail, Clinton said Americans need to build each other up and work together.

"We’ve now gone through four early states, and I want to congratulate Sen. Sanders on running a great race, and tomorrow, this campaign goes national," she told supporters at a victory speech on the campus of the University of South Carolina.

She called out Wall Street, saying she wants to ensure big banks don't abuse their power at the expense of women and the young.

My dad today confessed to me that he's scared of a Donald Trump presidency. "Scared" is the word he used.
8:48 PM

He's Muslim, 60. And an immigrant from Afghanistan. With nothing left back there for him to return to. All I could say was, "Won't happen."
8:52 PM

The truth is... I'm not so sure. I don't know if we can stop a Trump presidency. I mean, I sure as hell hope so, but I'm not certain.
8:56 PM

And until November, I will not stop worrying because I can't bear to look my dad in the eye and say, "I'm not sure, dad."

I appreciate that you like Sanders! Vote for him, talk to people.

I'm not really liking the defeatist attitude though. Bernie will snag a few states on Super Tuesday (Vermont, Massachusetts, Colorado, maybe Oklahoma, Minnesota), and after that the map looks much better for him, provided his supporters aren't convinced to give up prematurely.

Soc, you know I've been for Bernie, or at least I figured you'd seen my pro-Bernie posts.

And I will certainly vote for him and have been speaking up for him, but my point was that if he loses, it's not because the DNC stacked the deck. Stacking the deck from a DNC perspective shouldn't have cost him Nevada or caused a 40+ point loss in SC. I think beyond probably 25 points in SC, message strength plays the biggest role.

That isn't to say Bernie is done, but this trajectory is looking more and more "close but no cigar." A strong Super Tuesday would make me think differently, but it's just a longshot unfortunately.

MSNBC, Fox snub Bernie rally for Trump coverage

By NOLAN D. MCCASKILL 02/27/16 09:57 PM EST

As Bernie Sanders addresses supporters at a rally in Minnesota following a trouncing in the South Carolina Democratic primary, MSNBC and Fox News focused instead on Republican front-runner Donald Trump, who has racked up hour upon hour of coverage from cable networks since launching his campaign last year.

MSNBC spent Saturday night airing a documentary on Trump, while Fox News interviewed Donald Trump Jr. CNN and C-SPAN covered Sanders' speech in Minnesota, which has key caucuses on March 1.

Maybe Hilllary can be Bernie's VP, but I think he'd prefer Elizabeth Warren.

Ok, apparently I have to rephrase the question to get a serious answer from you. If Hillary wins the nomination, do you think Bernie would be willing to go along as her VP? Its not like they have bad blood, and she could use his voters.

It would probably help her win back all the Bernie supporters she's alienated, but I doubt he would do it. I think he can do more good in the Senate.

The GOP is dead. Long live the GOP

The chickens have come home to roost.,

Inside the Republican Party’s Desperate Mission to Stop Donald Trump

The scenario Karl Rove outlined was bleak.

Addressing a luncheon of Republican governors and donors in Washington on Feb. 19, he warned that Donald J. Trump’s increasingly likely nomination would be catastrophic, dooming the party in November. But Mr. Rove, the master strategist of George W. Bush’s campaigns, insisted it was not too late for them to stop Mr. Trump, according to three people present.

At a meeting of Republican governors the next morning, Paul R. LePage of Maine called for action. Seated at a long boardroom table at the Willard Hotel, he erupted in frustration over the state of the 2016 race, saying Mr. Trump’s nomination would deeply wound the Republican Party. Mr. LePage urged the governors to draft an open letter “to the people,” disavowing Mr. Trump and his divisive brand of politics.

The suggestion was not taken up. Since then, Mr. Trump has only gotten stronger, winning two more state contests and collecting the endorsement of Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey

If she wins the nomination, then I'll probably vote for her too, because she is the lesser evil, but she hasn't won the nomination yet.

Thank you man. And again, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your passion for Bernie. Even if he doesn't win, he still left a mark. Plus hey, at least you're not me. I bought a freaking Webb 2016 bumper sticker (Thank God I didn't put it on my car.)

Anyway, Trump is a fascist, point blank. I hate cheap labels but if there's a better term for him I haven't heard it. He's an orange Mussolini with hair.

Mussolini.gif

He's way too much of a clown to be Hitler

And I have absolutely no respect for anyone who supports him. I don't care what I thought of them in the past, they lost it all on this one. (JMS)

Peter, your posting prowess lately leaves a lot to be desired.  I never said nobody dislikes Trump.  What I said was it doesn't make sense to admitting liking Trump because you will be called a racist.

And in case you missed it because of your time on ES, a lot of folks like Rubio, many thought he was the future of the GOP, this election and the last election.

Really, I could have sworn I said there was an anti-Trump vote in the Republican primary, and I could have sworn you said:

I don't even get your point or any evidence that a vote for Rubio (who some BTW is looked at as the future of the GOP) in a high turnout primary = anti Trump.  Your logic doesn't make sense.  But maybe I am missing it.

And then you go ahead and post a blog from an evangelical that says he'll vote for anybody against Trump even in the general election.

Do you now see evidence for a high Rubio turn out being partly an anti-Trump?

30 minutes until SC Dem polls close. Last chance to get in on the betting: Over-under 20% win for Hillary today?

What did I win?

Honestly, if you set it at 30, I would have told you it was pretty much a toss up, and if you set it at 35, I would have taken the under.

I didn't see this coming like this.

Really, I could have sworn I said there was an anti-Trump vote in the Republican primary, and I could have sworn you said:

Maybe I misunderstood your point, maybe you misunderstood mine.

There was a high voter turnout in Nevada.  Almost 50% voted for Trump.  You then claimed that the high turnout was the anti Trump vote.  I said, well based on results you are wrong.  Then you tried to tie the % Rubio got as a proof that it was anti Trump.  I said Rubio was considered by many to be the future of the GOP and I wasn't shocked at his vote.  You then tried to claim that nobody likes Rubio which is just wrong (although after his latest tweets nobody will like him).

Then you tried to say none of the uninformed voters would vote for Trump because of a Gallup Poll.  To which I said I think there are a number of people who would never admit to voting for Trump because they would be viewed as a racist.

I never said there wasn't an anti Trump vote.  Obviously people voted for Cruz and Rubio.  I am sure some didn't want Trump, but some like Cruz and Rubio which you have a hard time understanding.

And then you go ahead and post a blog from an evangelical that says he'll vote for anybody against Trump even in the general election.

Do you now see evidence for a high Rubio turn out being partly an anti-Trump?

Does that mean high Trump turnout was anti Rubio and Cruz?  Are you claiming nobody likes Rubio but anti Trumpers, but Cruz voters were because the liked Cruz?

Yes there was probably a portion o voters who voted for any candidate other than Trump anti Trump.  There are also voters that voted for Rubio and Cruz that like them.

Is Sanders only getting the anti Hillary votes?

You get props. You called it.

I didn't see this coming either. How could the polls have been off by 15-25%?

In all honesty this is really depressing. Hillary vs Trump is a no win situation. They are not good people.

Hopefully Bernie does well on March 1st and March 15th.

Marco Rubio Pushed for Immigration Reform With Conservative Media

A few weeks after Senator Marco Rubio joined a bipartisan push for an immigration overhaul in 2013, he arrived alongside Senator Chuck Schumer at the executive dining room of News Corporation’s Manhattan headquarters for dinner.

Their mission was to persuade Rupert Murdoch, the owner of the media empire, and Roger Ailes, the chairman and chief executive of its Fox News division, to keep the network’s on-air personalities from savaging the legislation and give it a fighting chance at survival.

Mr. Murdoch, an advocate of immigration reform, and Mr. Ailes, his top lieutenant and the most powerful man in conservative television, agreed at the Jan. 17, 2013, meeting to give the senators some breathing room.

But the media executives, highly attuned to the intensifying anger in the Republican grass roots, warned that the senators also needed to make their case to Rush Limbaugh, the king of conservative talk radio, who held enormous sway with the party’s largely anti-immigrant base.

So the senators supporting the legislation turned to Mr. Rubio, the Florida Republican, to reach out to Mr. Limbaugh.
