You have to dig down into the numbers. Within 50 yards McManus was better. He doesn’t miss gimmes or anything out to deep 40’s. McManus attempts a lot of 50+ yarders and his overall FG% was hurt by being 5/10 on them. But he’s also had years where he does better beyond 50 than he did last year.

Also, if he sucks, we have ready-made witticisms like "Can't spell McManus without ANUS!" (TM)

Keim talked a lot about how respected Quinn was around the league--he seems to be a major attraction point for players here, especially defensive players.

Ekeler is gonna be huge for a rookie QB with his ability to catch passes and pick up cheapie first downs on 3rd down checkdowns while also being an oustanding blocker

Can't believe we were able to get both him and Bobby Wagner on such cheap short term deals.

Yeah he was good. He fell off last year but to be fair, EVERYONE on the Chargers fell off last year. They were just a mess and probably the only team with worse coaching than ours.

  • CapsSkins changed the title to Official 2024 FA/Trades Thread - IN: TE Ertz, DE Armstrong, C Biadasz, LB Luvu, RB Ekeler, K McManus, LG Allegretti, DE Ferrell, QB Mariota, DE Fowler Jr., LS Ott, S Chinn, LB Wagner, ST/LB Pittman, ST/CB Igbinoghene, CB Davis BACK: Reaves, Crowder, Obada

Wow, didn't know anything about Clelin until now but he's super chill, and I'm starting to see some character trends emerge with the new FAs that have come in. When asked about his expected role, Clelin (like Allegretti) said he doesn't expect anything and is prepared to work for it all, nothing taken as a given. Also didn't know he was a VA native, very cool.

His brief insights into GMAP were also notable, just confirming the things that many have said already, esp. being just as great a communicator as he is a person but also having a unique insight into players and being able to connect with them–I think "perceptive" is the operative word. Music to my ears considering the last regime often seemed detached and not very involved with the players on their own level.

CB Michael Davis looks like a depth signing. Maybe he can compete for a starting role on the outside. He gave up 9 TDs last year and a 119 passer rating allowed as the nearest defender. Hopefully he can bounce back this year with better coaching.

Yep he came across really well. Genuine excited to be here. Prepared to work hard and lead.

What Happened To Michael Davis in 2023?

It’s not like Michael Davis fell flat on his face, it’s just he was reminiscent of pre-2022 Davis, the one with the okay stats that’s good to have, but there are better options.

There were bright spots in 2023. His pass rush grade went up a smidge from the previous year to 77.8 which is the highest it’s been his whole career. He had more STOPs (18), and solo tackles (56), and his run defense grade was higher (64.1) than in 2022. But ultimately, his overall defense grade was lower (56.5), and he missed more tackles (10) despite only playing 49 more snaps.

Daniel Popper of The Athletic first reported in Week 12 that Davis had been replaced by Deane Leonard because of poor performance.

Where Davis excelled in 2022 in covering these high-powered receivers, he seemed to struggle in 2023. Part of that may be because of the failed J.C. Jackson experiment.

Popper said in Week 2 that when Davis did step in for Jackson against the Titans, Davis relayed that “he struggled to find a rhythm amid the rotation.”

So part of Davis’ woes can be attributed to coaching, but the other part you can just chock up to Davis being Davis. He’s been solid at times but gets sucked into the defensive issues of the whole team and is just as complicit in the explosive plays killing their games as everyone else.

Hope he'll be back to his 2022 season level.

seems like a reclamation project/ depth guy. I fully expect us to draft a CB in the first 3 rounds this year. With the amount of pics we now have in the top 3rds and the available depth Peters should be able to land some gems.
