All things defense

The tape from the Jags game on Jamin looked bad. He still takes bad angles, but also - I just don’t see a fast guy. I know he can run fast but there is no burst. I don’t see aggression from him at all but worse of all - there were several plays where once it was past him, he just sort of jogged to the commotion instead of running full steam. That’s not a sign of confusion, he may just not have it in him.

Perhaps, but watching that draft video the team put out, it looked like Mayhew had a LOT of authority/responsibility. I think its more a partnership like Reid/Veach in Kansas City among others.

I went looking for my older post on this topic and ironically I was responding to you then as well lol, so here’s my take on that from when it happened:

Yeah they seem to work well together and Rivera trusts him to work the phones and represent the team in trade talks. But it’s also clear they’d had talks in the lead-up to the draft about potential packages that may be on the table if certain players were available (normal S.O.P.), so they already narrowed down the priority of certain potential moves behind closed doors and just had to decide between the options that manifested on the day of. So it’s not like Mayhew really made that choice himself. You can also see Rivera make the final call on Dotson vs. Green, Mayhew actually leads with mentioning Green, then they mention them both, then Rivera dictates Dotson as the final choice.

The interesting part to me was that they did have two teams on the phone who wanted us to trade back a second time, but we preferred Dotson. I think we kinda knew we had other opportunities, but it’s nice to see just how much we valued him in that 16 spot.

All in all, it was nice to see Doug doing a job he’s actually qualified for, mentoring suits him. Though of course it’s easy to imagine that some players and their entourage probably give him the old “sure pops whatever you say” and blow him off, it’s also easy to see that if they find the right personalities he’s capable of forming that bond, which is a good thing to have in the FO.

It was also good to see that Hurney was basically posted up at a table in the corner, not actively involved in moment-to-moment decision-making in the war room. That’s what I’d hoped for in my head, more of a consultant and comfortable figure for Rivera than a real part of the brain trust on draft day.

Davis is costing them too much to play him, just like last year. They're going to be more angry towards him as they doubled down on ths guy and lost again.

They'd be better off if they just use him with some creativity when it's a pass play... and delay blitz him. He's worthless in coverage. Last year he was rated dead last at pass defense for LB'ers. That was supposed to be a pre-draft strength and the results are the game is too big for him right now. Forget he was a 1st round pick. That doesn't matter anymore. Davis is a rotational/development player right now, not a starter. Find a way to solve the team defense issues now. Been preaching it for months and they better go get a decent LB'er because it's going to be costing them W's.

That’s where I am at. Let him be a “specialist”

Watching Rivera's press conference It didn't sound like there is a rift between him and del rio.

You could say he was being a politician but I didn't sense that, it seemed like he agreed with everything del rio said about jamin and pretty much agreed with him in his entire press conference.

I didn't get any negative vibes but I've certainly been wrong before.

He's talked/complained about JDR's schemes several times now.  There is definitely tension there.

The problem with Jamin is that he isn’t football smart. The game is too big for him. If you’re constantly thinking, then you won’t react well and you won’t be quick to the play. When he doesn’t hustle to the ball, it’s more than likely him being frustrated with himself and just sort of giving up.

Maybe by benching him, it may help him learn the game. Maybe we should start that kid Milo.

Detroit has a really good slot receiver St Brown who is very similar to Kirk except bigger. Jamin is gonna be put into mismatches again where he might have to cover him. If it’s the same thing again, bench the guy!

How has he been playing?

i believe he's continued the momentum he built during his one year with us. the few times i've watched a broncos game, he looks solid. it might be partly because he's playing on a better defensive squad...but he did so well with us.

I still think its too early to give up on Jamin, even if only for investment cost. They chose to double down and run with the guy, so you can't move on after one game. Got to give him a multitude of opportunities.

That being said you also have to acknowledge he was absolutely terrible last year, and looks to be struggling out of the gate this year too. Patience certainly looks to be wearing thin with the change in coaching tactics and all.

I hope it gets to him and it finally clicks for the guy b/c I have seen nothing on the field that shows even an ounce of improvement.

I seem to remember dude has some stupidly well-oiled hips that were especially apparent at the combine, but the guy is so weird to read n react that he does not get to use proper form. Everything is a panic lumbering contortion as he is behind where he should have been. He does not keep things in front of him in coverage to make use of his backpedal and swivel abilities. It was really obvious in that play where he got burned by the RB. He just waits for the RB to close the entire distance, then panic bails-out. There is no conversion of momentum, just trying to run a guy down from a near standstill.

Im not expecting any lber to cover Christian kirk very well, but I've seen tape of Jamin having the coverage footwork of a cornerback, including from this summer locking up McKissick. But those are drills. He still looks like a deer in headlights. He is so indecisive it doesn't matter how fast he is its way too slow. He had a nice blitz.

A good game against Detroit flips this narrative on its head.

Criticize privately, praise in public.

the coaches calling Jamin out is not going to motivate someone to be better than they are. Jamin Davis is who he is and the blame for expectations vs production lies solely on Rivera imo.

“A good manager doesn’t fire people. He hires and inspires people.”

Michael Scott, Regional Manager

Dunder Mifflin Scranton

Rivera hired him, he tried to inspire him in several ways now, one of which I don’t agree with. Soon it will be time to move him to the Anex with Toby and the special teamers and call this what it is, a failed experiment.

We'd all like to see it. Nobody's holding him down except himself. It was foolish to expect different results and put all your eggs in one basket by not bringing in real competition.

We need to not put him in any positions where he's covering WRs, but on the flip side I'm not sure what it he does well.

I watched it again and he's a backup and shouldn't be playing meaningful snaps. Mayo will get more reps and he's a JAG. They blew it. The games too much for him. Need to admit they were wrong and get someone in there.
