Herbert was #6. But otherwise, I agree with you.

My main point was, we don't need to be obsessed with a need for the #1 pick to get a good QB

#1 overall may actually work against you.  Best QBs in football today are who?  Brady, Rodgers, Brees, Wilson and Mahomes right?  Mahomes is the highest draft pick at 10 overall.  Rodgers is the only other one drafted in the first round at 24th overall.  The last number 1 overall QB that was arguably the best QB while active was Peyton Manning in the 90s.

Andrew Luck would have been great if his body had held up.  Cam was an mvp one season but he never been able to duplicate it and was never really considered the best passer.

Seems like the best QBs aren’t usually the obvious choice when they’re drafted.

The best QBs in general are all still 1st round picks. Examples: Deshaun Watson. Lamar Jackson. Ben Roethlisberger. Josh Allen. Ryan Tannehill. The list goes on and on.

Sure there are some good ones drafted in later rounds but the %s are heavily in favor of drafting one in the 1st round, but it doesn't have to necessarily be top 5 or top 10.

Agreed.  1st round almost certainly, especially considering how many QBs are taken in the later rounds that no one ever hears from again.  It’s just interesting that the very best QBs today were not the first QBs taken in their drafts.

Eli (1st) was taken before Roethlisberger (11th).  Personal issues notwithstanding Ben was clearly the better QB on the field.
Aaron Rodgers (24th) was taken after Alex Smith (1st)

Vick (1st) was taken before Brees (32nd).

Mahomes (10th) went after Trubisky (2nd).  Hahaha
