JK Rowling and the Woke Cancellation

Quote

This isn’t an easy piece to write, for reasons that will shortly become clear, but I know it’s time to explain myself on an issue surrounded by toxicity. I write this without any desire to add to that toxicity.

For people who don’t know: last December I tweeted my support for Maya Forstater, a tax specialist who’d lost her job for what were deemed ‘transphobic’ tweets. She took her case to an employment tribunal, asking the judge to rule on whether a philosophical belief that sex is determined by biology is protected in law. Judge Tayler ruled that it wasn’t.

More at the link.

Rowling is currently being cancelled by the internet for a reasonable take. I don't intend for this to be a "debate transgender issues" thread, but I'm interested to hear what the Tailgate thinks about this.

To me this seems like part of a broader trend where the woke internet's collective opinion would be the exact opposite of the general public, but it is increasingly pointless to bother debating it. Rowling is extremely wealthy and as such basically can't be cancelled but that doesn't work for the average person.

If you tweet wrongthink, people are crazy enough to try to dox you and get you fired. And I'm not trying to say there are NO opinions that deserve cancellation, but this seems like a problem that is spiraling out of control, particularly with Gen Z. Do any of you with kids or friends in this age range notice this?

Given the thread title, I was expecting things to go the other way.  I remember people were upset at her a few years ago when she declared that Dumbledor was gay.

A man with refined taste for cultural arts, dresses in fabulous robes and keeps a gigantic exotic bird? Not a hard one to figure out :silly:

I admit I'm either too dense or this delicious Moscow Mule was one too many but I do not follow. Except for the part about the bad thread title, sorry about that. Oh and the day, not bad for me. Tough one right now for my dog who is terrified of storms.

This article uses the current controversy to provide a list of grievances that the author has with Rowling's commentary on her own books. I have to say overall it's impressive that she's been cancelled by the fundamentalist right for witchcraft and the woke left for TERFdom. A true radical centrist.

Just imagine Beal opening his garage door in the morning and immediately gets trampled by Cousins and his agent. "You WILL pay me 170 billion! GUARANTEED! "

Oh no no no.  I mean, yes.  But after Cousins and his agent are followed by the current Falwell and the Liberty University marching band.

Those who termed the group/concept Awoke, have grossly mislabeled it.

Its anything but. It’s the ego sneaking in the back door, identifying (and labeling itself) as unidentifiable. And getting a sense of self from it.

Yes, interacting with people’s egos (identities) is definitely exhausting. It’s why I’m an introvert. I need a lot of time to recharge after socializing with the general public.

I don't understand the need to go looking for new things to be angry about like it's the flavor of the month, but it's pretty easy to do from a smartphone.

I want to believe some folks want to help in this world that frustrates them but don't know how, and that's different then folks that just want to look like they care more then someone else for attention.

"March for our Lives" proved to me Gen Z could be taken seriously on activism for things that threaten them directly versus looking for things to be mad about, I was at the first DC really and heard them do pretty much all the talking on stage. Cats don't heard themselves, and I'm not convinced folks like David Hogg are the leaders they think they are yet. He's young, we shall see.

I can tune it out, same time, I think it's a symptom from lack of avenues for constructive activism, perception of that, or making realistic in the digital age.  There will always be folks who go for low hanging fruit and easiest way to feel like they are making a difference, the common denominator is folks wanting to make a difference.  For better or worse, that's a good thing and step one in changing anything.

This cancel culture though. I’m not very familiar with it, but it’s incredibly powerful.

I guess when you put yourself out there, especially in business.... at some point you’re going to have to decide what you value more.... your brand or your opinions.

Yeah I think that's an important part of this. I think in the vast majority of cases people genuinely believe they are trying to do the right thing and make the world a better place. Part of what drives the passion on so many issues.

Think society is still getting used to the internet.

People shouldn't be afraid to say what's on their minds, pre-Internet it was always true you can't make everyone happy no matter what you do or say.

Same time a lot of folks are pissed off and indiscriminately shooting at everything that pissing them off on the Internet.  This is definitely a problem, but a far better problem then indifference or apathy.

The Internet is acting like a football player that has to constantly be told to chill the F out, which I would rather have then a player who jus shows up for the check and doesn't even like football.  It's easier to reel someone back then get them to give a **** in the first place.

In no way am I defending folks I think have gone too far, just wondering out loud what to do with this energy, what is the true root problem here so we can make the most of it.  The extreme alternative is that energy being gone, I think that's worse no matter how I feel about cancel culture.

It's growing. I didn't care that the statue of Columbus was dragged down. But I've started to wonder - how much longer is the US capital called Washington? Do I care about that? Washington owned over a hundred slaves. There is no real criteria for cancellation and what's the difference really between Columbus and Washington here? I'm starting to expect in my lifetime the capital name will change.
