Player Bio

Given Tech's history of producing NFL defensive backs and emphasizing special teams, it's no surprise Stroman will get interest from scouts. A dual-threat quarterback in high school (1,544 yards, 17 touchdowns passing; 1,233 yards, 15 touchdowns rushing), Stroman played a role in all three phases of the game as a true freshman in 2014. He played in 13 games, starting once while playing on offense (two carries for four yards, one reception for six yards), defense (three tackles, pass breakup), and special teams (36 returns for 249 yards). Stroman carried a bigger role on defense as a sophomore in 2015 (24 tackles, two interceptions, five pass breakups), though he still contributed as a rusher (seven carries, 12 yards) and as a punt returner (31 returns, 241 yards, touchdown). He was a second-team All-ACC selection by league coaches in 2016, starting nine games at cornerback (13 tackles, three interceptions, 10 pass breakups) and excelling as a kick (22 returns, 460 yards) and punt (25 returns, 221 yards, touchdown) returner. Stroman moved up to a first-team all-conference defender in 2017 (20 tackles, four interceptions, 11 pass breakups), and also an honorable mention selection as a return specialist (35 returns, 397 yards, two touchdowns on punt returns).

"The summer before Stroman's senior year of high school, he worked out as a cornerback at Virginia Tech's one day camp where the defensive backs coach said that he would play on Sunday's. The coach was Torrian Gray who will now coach him for the Redskins."

This is the sleeper pick I'm rooting for the most.  My wife actually used to work with his mom so I've got a bit of a personal connection that way.

I have a feeling his return skills are going to make him valuable, and he could push some of the other DBs for a roster spot.

I agree

What kills me is he ran a 4.48 which in the standards of reality is really fast, but in football terms is not breathtaking.  When you watch those punt returns, he looks like the fastest guy on the field by a large margin.  I hope it translates,

Now Jamison won’t be needed to fumble punts

Torrian Gray is going to build a dynamic secondary. I can’t wait. Stroman will shine

@SkinsHokieFan,

Given that you're a VT fan and likely watch all of the games, what's your take on Stroman as a possible 4th CB in the depth chart? How does he stack up to Fuller or is he a big step back? Starter potential?

If i can chime in....

I could see him in the slot, but he's a little undersized to do it.  Hes got plus instincts and ball skills, but you wonder about his open field speed on the outside, and how he plays at the LOS.  If he can add a little weight without forfeiting speed, he absolutely could be a dime corner.  Quick feet and good vision would help him inside against shifty type WR that you generally see in the slot.

His draft profile primarily focuses the concerns on size, and very little concern about football ability.

Thanks.

I noticed this part, too. They mentioned "bone thin legs" and "unlikely to carry much more additional weight on his frame" in his draft profile.

I'm guessing that special teams is the most we can hope for with this one and we'll have to hope that one of our CB draft picks from 2016 develops into a starter.

His frame.

Exactly.  I feel like an NFL training staff, diet group, and weight lifting regiment can help, but you can see his legs in this picture.  As a contrast I put a picture of Fuller up too.
