Here's the Real Reason We Associate 420 With Weed

Over the past two decades, 21 states plus the District of Columbia and Guam have legalized marijuana for recreational use. That means marijuana smokers can smoke more openly than ever before on 4/20—a date that both marijuana smokers and non-smokers recognize as a national holiday for cannabis culture. Yet few actually know how the date got chosen.

Some say “420” is code among police officers for “marijuana smoking in progress.” Some note 4/20 is also Adolf Hitler’s birthday. And some go as far as to cite Bob Dylan’s song “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” because 12 multiplied by 35 equals 420.

But, to put it bluntly, those rumors of the history behind how April 20, and 4/20, got associated with marijuana are false.

The most credible story traces 4/20 to Marin County, Calif. In 1971, five students at San Rafael High School would meet at 4:20 p.m. by the campus’ statue of chemist Louis Pasteur to partake. They chose that specific time because extracurricular activities had usually ended by then. This group — Steve Capper, Dave Reddix, Jeffrey Noel, Larry Schwartz, and Mark Gravich — became known as the “Waldos” because they met at a wall. They would say “420” to each other as code for marijuana.

As Reddix told TIME in 2017, “We got tired of the Friday-night football scene with all of the jocks. We were the guys sitting under the stands smoking a doobie, wondering what we were doing there.”

The shenanigans continued long after 4:20 p.m., too. The group challenged each other to find ever-more-interesting things to do under the influence, calling their adventures “safaris.”

Later, Reddix’s brother helped him get work with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh as a roadie, so the band is said to have helped popularize the term “420.” On Dec. 28, 1990, a group of Deadheads in Oakland handed out flyers that invited people to smoke “420” on April 20 at 4:20 p.m. One ended up with Steve Bloom, a former reporter for High Times magazine, an authority on cannabis culture. The magazine printed the flyer in 1991 and continued to reference the number. Soon, it became known worldwide as code for marijuana. In 1998, the outlet acknowledged that the “Waldos” were the “inventors” of 420.

Pennsylvania bill would allow school nurses to give students medical marijuana

Pennsylvania State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta says he plans to introduce a bill that would “allow the school nurse to administer medical marijuana” to a child.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, both the departments of Education and Health “support the administration of medical marijuana under a Patient Authorization Letter to students with serious medical conditions and the maintenance of a safe environment for other students while on school property.”

The Minnesota House on Tuesday passed a recreational marijuana bill in a 71-59 vote.

A Senate vote on the bill is scheduled for Friday. There are some differences between each proposal that will likely be sorted out during a conference committee, a joint meeting of lawmakers from both chambers.

Gov. Tim Walz has said he'll sign the bill as soon as it gets to his desk.

A California cannabis competition is looking for judges: Here’s how to sign up

An annual cannabis judging competition hosted by a prominent weed culture magazine is returning to Southern California for another year of head-to-head competitions, and experts are sought to crown the state’s top cannabis suppliers.

The 2023 Cannabis Cup, orchestrated and organized by High Times, invites Southern California residents to participate in the annual marijuana battle royale.

High Times is inviting SoCal residents of legal age to join the Cannabis Cup as judges by purchasing a take-home judging kit and providing their expertise on products provided by large-scale operations and mom-and-pop pot shops. Participating judges can evaluate sativa and indica flowers, gummies, chocolates, other edibles and pre-rolled joints.

The competitions is open to all brands across California, but will be judged primarily by Southern California consumers, High Times said.

It’s the third time the Cannabis Cup has been held in California, a state that High Times says has a “legendary” cannabis history.

So dank it's illegal (literally): Man barred from smoking medical weed after neighbor sues

Following a three-year long legal battle, a Washington, D.C. judge banned a man from smoking medical marijuana in his home after his neighbor filed a lawsuit claiming the smell drifted into her home and made her sick.

Judge Ebony Scott ruled this week that although Thomas Cackett has a license to purchase medical marijuana "he does not possess a license to disrupt the full use and enjoyment of one’s land, nor does his license usurp this long established right."

According to court documents, Josefa Ippolito-Shepherd sued Cackett, who lives in the ground level apartment in an adjacent duplex, and her neighbor Angella Farserotu, who owns the duplex, in 2020. Ippolito-Shepherd alleged in her complaint that Cackett "'smokes marijuana 24/7' and that the 'foul and pungent odor enters and permeates (her) home, making her violently sick ...'"

The dispensary a few blocks from me is.  I was in there Tuesday and they were upgrading (and failing) the software.

Recreational cannabis will become legal in Maryland on Saturday, July 1, but it will come with rules of use. County Executive Marc Elrich this week offers his thoughts on the new law and provides information residents should know. He also is encouraged by the next steps in increases in the County minimum wage, which also go into effect on July 1. The County Council this week continued its discussions on rent stabilization legislation, leading the County Executive to say he could support a proposed compromise bill.

Governor Youngkin "not interested" in marijuana licensing structure

Virginia started down the road to legalizing marijuana. But the destination remains out of sight.

Virginia legalized possession of marijuana in small amounts back in 2021. But nobody has a license to sell it because the General Assembly has failed to create a licensing structure. Now, one of Glenn Youngkin’s key officials says the governor is not interested.
