JSSkinz
I love these town halls and hope we continue to see them but the structure is a mess, if you're looking for hour long shouting matches where nothing gets answered then keep them the way they are, otherwise give them some structure so you can get through as many questions as possible.

Certainly agree. I don't think any elected rep should pick and choose questions, but asking tough poignant questions in a respectful manner is far more constructive than just having a big shouting match. We should all seek to elevate the level of discourse.
DogofWar1
"You guys just want to investigate everybody." - Steve Womack (R-AR), responding to constituents asking about Trump/Russia I swear, no Republican official, for the foreseeable future, should ever be allowed to complain about people calling for investigations. The punishment for doing so, if we wanted to have true objective universal justice, would be getting kicked in the balls by Hillary and Bill for at least an hour. Actually, based on nothing other than those two tweets visionary posted, above, it sounds to me like Brat had the right idea. Bang
So long as the president continues to dismiss any critic as fake, and every protester as a hired agitator, then the toadies below won't ever listen. Frankly, i'm surprised any of them are even bothering to go through the motions with these town halls. They don't want to hear from constituents unless it's to tell them they're doing great. These meetings are packed with people who are very upset, and it won't matter. But isn't it nice that they're showing up to make it look like they're not ignoring you? Does anyone think Mitch McConnell gave a single **** about anything anyone said to him that didn't fly with his predetermined agenda? ~Bang Edited February 22, 2017 by Bang
skinny21
They had a couple doozies on (I believe it was) Rachel Maddow - At McConnell's TH - one lady talking about about coal miners and (the threat of) stripping away their healthcare and promising them jobs that weren't going to come back (that created their health problems in the first place). She finished with (paraphrasing) "answer that and I'll sit the hell down like you made Senator Warren sit down". Another TH, guy starts his question with (paraphrasing) "I'm sorry for my forcefulness in trying to be heard" One GOPer says (paraphrasing) "If you all keep applauding every question I won't have time to answer as man questions". To which someone shouts out "They're trying to show their support for the questions". Which draws a big applause. Have to wonder how much of these TH's are actually just pure shouting matches vs the media showing the more volatile moments of the crowd. Sad that some seem to think these these people are paid to be there. Like, really? You can't think of any reason for people to be pissed off right now? A wapo reporter attended several THs and the few conservatives (well, Republicans anyway) he spoke to were convinced people were driving down from the city to protest. Reporter pointed out that they were in Iowa, where the have the county on the license plate, so it was pretty easy to see that wasn't the case. As long as they don't pick through and only answer the easy questions, also the rest of the crowd needs to shut up so there can be a dialogue between the person asking and answering the question. I guess I would like to see them more like the Bernie town hall on MSNBC a few weeks ago. Edited February 22, 2017 by jschuck12001

skinny21
The ACA map in the tweet about Arkansawyers is for 2014. Here's a bit of an update that shows the change in uninsured from year to year. Pretty cool. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/10/31/upshot/up-uninsured-2016.html
Jumbo
Mitch McConnell can sure be a pig. After dealing with protesters at his first town hall where he acted like he was all cool with it (and he blew off the deal as paid activism) he changed the remaining to all paid meetings (you buy a ticket) and made the price $60. Two resident protesters did pay to be able to see him, and they showed a clip of when one---a 35-40 y.o. well-mannered middle-class looking (i know, i know) white woman---rose to ask "why won't you meet your constituents without charging them money? we're here to ask you real questions about..." and she named a couple issues like russian influence/hacks etc. one person applauded, there was some murmuring but no booing, and two security guys quickly walked over to her as she got that out, and escorted her by her arms out the room....and Mitch is there just absolutely leering and laughs and says "did somebody invite another speaker?" and then more people laughed. Can't say would need more information about why he votes this way (Is it because that party espouses other beliefs he rates higher than his personal interest?) but what I can say is there is nothing admirable about voting for your own personal interests (may not be anything wrong with it but it certainly isn't admirable). @DCGoldPants
All the talk of impeachment of a President. I bet there would be more support from districts or states or whatever to boot their representation when that person hides from them. By the way. Dems are insane to not hold as many open townhalls as possible right now. It's a gamble. But if you to represent the people. Showing up is a good start. Jumbo
i'm putting this here cuz it's the closest fit (relates to 2018 elections) i am really liking this "mayor pete" guy (so. bend indiana) the last few weeks...he's generated the most positive reaction I've had to any of the dems vying for dnc so far...ex vet...smart, reasonable, controlled but energetic too ...didn't know he was gay...only 35...white guy....really like him so far but still leanring about him which brings me to this---a few times i've had a hard time finding an existing thread to psot a political (sp. check tried to make that "polecat") item hate to start any more political threads, but do you guys think we should have one on the dnc/direction of the opposition or something similar? we'll indulge a bit of an OT exchange on this....
