Mocks: Who will the Redskins draft at No. 21?

A look at whom the ESPN experts think Washington will pick at No. 21 in Round 1 of tonight's NFL draft (8 p.m. ET on ESPN, WatchESPN):

  • Mel Kiper Jr.: A'Shawn Robinson, DT, Alabama
  • Todd McShay: Jarran Reed, DT, Alabama
  • Louis Riddick: Robinson
  • NFL Nation: Karl Joseph, S, West Virginia

In Todd McShay's last mock, he had the Redskins selecting Alabama defensive lineman Jarran Reed, a player I'm comfortable with them selecting and have been from the beginning (Reed was unavailable when the Redskins selected in our NFL Nation mock draft). This might be a passing league, but the Redskins ranked 26th vs. the run last season and in order to have the pass rushers help, they need to fare better on run downs. Last season the Redskins were tied with Oakland for facing the most passing attempts on second-and-5 or better (52). Reed makes sense. Another lineman to watch is Louisiana Tech's Vernon Butler, whom I like a lot.


ESPN - Forget Paxton Lynch, Redskins need other players to be around for trade

Considering the depth at certain positions, addding more picks to the eight they already have would be a good thing for the Redskins. Read it in BRBN

One defensive lineman that has drawn much praise from multiple teams I've talked to: Louisiana Tech defensive lineman Vernon Butler. Scouts like his upside quite a bit and at least some consider him the best athlete of the group. He could tempt the Redskins, who pick 21st and continue to seek help along the defensive line. Regardless, Butler will be one to watch.

I don't think the NFL has a Tackle problem, as much as I think the NFL has a "falling in love with freakish athletes and projecting them to be stud blindside pass protectors right away" problem. They are being considered busts because they're going top-5 consistently in a league that moves its best pass rushers around to take advantage of mismatches now...I think OT's are overvalued currently and interior OL are undervalued.

Most of those were top-10 picks, which has to factor in. Taylor, Samuels, Williams, Landry, Rodgers, Arrington off the top of my head.

 

Nah, because I remember when the Lions were drafting first rounder WRs one after the other and when they were about ready to get rid of all of them they drafted Megatron.  Recent history says we do well with first rounder, which is another reason I'm ecstatic about having a GM who actually cares about them.

He was already one of the players I didn't want to take at 21 -- I don't want a MLB whose weakness is actually tackling.  But the Giants comment is now the kicker for me.   :)   Having said that, I'll like whomever Scot picks even if it isn't a guy I originally liked -- I'll just assume I am wrong.  :lol:
