WA Rep. Matt Shea engaged in ‘domestic terrorism,’ helped plan Malheur standoff, investigation finds

An independent investigation has concluded that Washington state Rep. Matt Shea “participated in an act of domestic terrorism against the United States” by helping plan the armed takeover of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon three years ago.

The investigation found that Shea similarly played a key role in two other armed conflicts against the U.S. government — not only by showing up and participating in the standoffs, but by helping plan them, which involved recruiting armed militia members to oppose federal law enforcement agents.

On Thursday, shortly after the report was released publicly, House Minority Leader J.T. Wilcox confirmed that Shea had been suspended from the House Republican caucus, a serious form of discipline. That means Shea’s access to legislative staff will be limited, and he will be barred from House Republicans’ internal meetings to discuss pending legislation.

Shea was also removed from his position as ranking member on the House Energy and Environment Committee, and taken off two other committees on which he serves.

The 108-page report, released Thursday after being posted online by Crosscut, includes several other serious findings against Shea.

Among them: that the Spokane Valley lawmaker took part in a group chat in 2017 where he “condoned violence and intimidation” of his political opponents, and offered to conduct background checks on them.

That allegation, first reported by The Guardian in April, was largely what spurred House leaders to commission the outside investigation into Shea’s conduct.

But the incident wasn’t an isolated one, according to the four-month investigation, which was led by a former FBI agent and former law enforcement officer.

The investigation says Shea, a leader of the anti-government Patriot movement, routinely encouraged his supporters to intimidate “activists, government officials, Muslims, and others who speak or act in opposition to his personal beliefs and political agenda.” Those activities occurred over a five-year period from 2014 to 2019, the report says.

The four-month investigation similarly confirmed other media reports about Shea, including that he “engaged in and supported the training of youth and young adults to fight a holy war” (also reported by The Guardian), and that he wrote a document called “Biblical Basis for War" (first reported by The Spokesman-Review).

According to the investigators’ report, Shea’s “Biblical Basis for War” document called for replacing the U.S. government with a theocracy, as well as the “killing of all males who don’t agree.”

Shea, who didn’t respond to the investigators’ requests for an interview, has previously said the biblical warfare document was merely a summary of Old Testament sermons.

In a statement released by his attorney, Mark Lamb, Shea said he was not allowed to review and respond to the report before it was released — a denial of due process, in Shea’s opinion.

Defiant Rep. Matt Shea won't resign, draws President Trump impeachment comparison

State Rep. Matt Shea, expelled from the Republicans' House caucus, will not resign and says that, like President Donald Trump, he is the victim of a "sham investigation."

The Spokane Valley legislator helped plan "an act of domestic terrorism against the United States," according to an investigation done for the state House of Representatives by the Rampart Group LLC, a firm headed by a former FBI agent. The firm's 108-page report was shared Thursday with Shea's House colleagues.

Rep. J.T. Wilcox, House Minority Leader, immediately threw Shea out of the GOP Caucus, stripped Shea of committee assignments, said Shea will not be permitted at caucus meetings and will need to find a new office. The response of ostracism has been successfully deployed by Republican leaders in Congress to force the immediate resignation of members embroiled in scandal.

Shea, a six-term lawmaker from the 4th District, responded with this Facebook post:

"Like we are seeing with our President, this is a sham investigation meant to silence those of us who stand up against attempts to disarm and destroy our great country. I will not back down. I will not give in. I will not resign. Stand strong, fellow Patriots.

"Thank you to everyone for the massive outpouring of support prayers! I will continue to defend the Constitution against tyranny and fight to protect our God given rights to life, liberty, property and the ability to defend the same. Blessings to you. Matt."

The "act of domestic terrorism" was the 2016 armed occupation of Oregon's Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. The investigation concluded: "The action was portrayed as a spontaneous act but this investigation has obtained information that the armed takeover was meticulously planned December 2015 by conspirators that included Rep. Shea."

Judge revokes grazing permit for ranchers pardoned by Trump

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A judge on Friday revoked the grazing permit of two ranchers who were pardoned last year by President Donald Trump on an arson conviction for setting fire to federal lands.

U.S. District Judge Michael Simon ruled in the long-running case after hearing arguments from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which granted a 10-year grazing permit to Dwight and Steven Hammond after Trump’s July 2018 pardon. The renewal prompted a coalition of environmental groups to sue.

Simon in July limited where the Hammonds could graze their cattle, but let them continue to use other portions of the public allotments for their ranching operation in remote southeastern Oregon while the environmental groups continued with their legal challenge.

In his ruling Simon said then-Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s decision to restore the Hammonds’ permits was ”’arbitrary and capricious, an abuse of discretion, not rationally connected to the facts.″

isn’t there a post 911 law that makes providing material support to terrorists a crime? Maybe they should be looking into the donors to these guys.

Sean Anderson, 52, was hospitalized with a wound to the face early Saturday morning following an incident in which a Lewis County sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull him over for a vehicular violation.  After a brief stop, Anderson took off at high speed with officers from multiple jurisdictions in pursuit. Upon reaching a residential area near Ferdinand, shots were exchanged and Anderson was wounded.
