Reed told police that he was holding his rifle outside the recruitment center when someone asked if he could take a look at it. Reed agreed, and while he was trying to clear the ammunition from the weapon, he accidentally fired one shot into the asphalt pavement.

The only damage was a hole in the pavement. The rifle was taken from Reed pending his appearance in court, the incident report says.

Conviction on the fourth-degree misdemeanor is punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail.

Reed was convicted of the same offense in 2013, and was fined $50, court records show.

OT, but remembering a story that a friend told me, from his time in Desert Storm.

The scene is a field command post, in Iraq.  Since it's a combat zone, people are, of course, walking around armed.  but people are supposed to safe their weapons before entering the CP.  At the entrance to the CP, there's a sign, with instructions, and a 55 gallon drum, half full of sand.  People, before entering the CP, are instructed to:

1)  Draw their weapon, and aim it into the barrel full of sand.

2)  Eject the magazine.

3)  Open the slide of the weapon.

4)  Visually inspect that there is no round in the chamber.

5)  Release the slide.

6)  And then squeeze the trigger, to let the hammer down on their weapon.  (The idea is, if there was a round in the chamber, then  the weapon will fire a round into the sand, which is there for that purpose.)

Well, it seems some lieutenant (I assume that, in these stories, it's always a lieutenant) forgot about Step 2.

He opened his weapon (ejecting an unfired round), looked into the chamber, saw that it was empty, and allowed the slide to come forward.  But, when he did that, the weapon chambered a round from the still-inserted magazine.

He pulls the trigger, as per SOP.  And the weapon fires.

So, he opens the slide.  (Ejecting another unfired round.)  looks into the chamber.  Verifies that it's empty.  Allows the slide to come forward.  Pulls the trigger.  Bang.

And repeats.

So, on my way home from Iraq, the charter we flew required us to remove the entire bolt carrier group from our rifles. Because somehow, after going through a clearing barrel to get in to customs, having everything you own be rummaged through for live ammo and contraband, and then going through another clearing barrel, some idiot STILL managed to have a negligent discharge. On the air plane. Minutes before it was supposed to take off for home. They were delayed several days because the crew didn't want to fly with a hole in the floor.

Oh, and after that, we got stranded in India for a week because Omni Air Intl forgot to tell the Indian government that they were flying a company of Marines home.

Worst. Summer vacation. Ever.

In the wake of the devastating tragedy in Chattanooga that claimed the lives of five service members and following Governor Scott’s Executive Order, we will expedite all Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License applications submitted by active military members and veterans. We will begin this process immediately. Our goal is to issue licenses to qualified applicants as quickly as possible.

Active military personnel who want to apply for a Florida Concealed Weapon or Firearm License should include a copy of their Common Access Card or other form of official military identification with their applications when they submit them to the department. We can also accept a copy of service members' current orders as proof of active duty status. Honorably discharged veterans should submit a copy of their DD 214 long form with their applications.

We are grateful for our military members' and veterans’ service to our country, and we will do whatever we can to support them.

Dem senators urge gun stores to tighten background checks

Reflecting the realities of a Capitol Hill run by Republicans, Senate Democrats on Tuesday called on large retailers to voluntarily close a loophole in federal gun background-check laws.

The plea by Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, both of Connecticut, is a simple one: Follow the lead of Wal-Mart.

Lol, in other words, please do what we can not legislate in Congress because the American people do not want it. "Voluntarily close a loophole." Dear legislators, when you intentionally write the law with such a caveat, it is not a loophole. It is an intentionally clause.

How about the government fix the system they have, as this is now the second time that it's failed to prevent someone who was not allowed to have a firearm from having one. It really shouldn't be that hard.

The Latest: Theater attacker had fake bomb, police say

The latest on reports of shots fired at a Nashville-area movie theater (all times local):

5:20 p.m.

Police say a man who attacked moviegoers at a Nashville-area theater had a fake bomb inside of a backpack he was carrying.

That backpack was detonated by a bomb squad on Wednesday afternoon after the man used pepper spray inside the theater. Three people were treated for exposure, and one of them had a superficial cut from a hatchet the attacker was wielding.

The attacker also had a gun and died in a shootout with police.

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron says investigators are going through a second backpack that the suspect left at the theater.

___

4:35 p.m.

A man says he has no idea why he and six others were attacked inside a movie theater by a man wielding a hatchet and a gun.

The man spoke to reporters outside the Nashville-area theater and was identified by a police spokesman only as Steven because his family "does not want any kind of 15 minutes of fame."

Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron says there were eight people in the theater for the screening of "Mad Max," including the suspect.

Steven and his daughter were among three people pepper-sprayed, and he was cut by the suspect's hatchet.

The victim says he has "no idea why this gentleman decided to attack us."

4:15 p.m.

A bomb squad has detonated a backpack that a man had been wearing on his chest while wielding a hatchet and gun inside a Nashville-area movie theater.

The backpack was detonated Wednesday afternoon after police said the suspect was killed by officers in a gunfight.

Metro Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron says the suspect has tentatively been identified as a 51-year-old local man. His name was not released.

Aaron says an officer encountered the suspect, who attacked three people during a showing of "Mad Max." All three had been doused by pepper spray; one of them, a man, had a cut to his shoulder after he was apparently hit by a hatchet.

The suspect was shot and killed when he tried to leave through the theater's rear door.

So, a guy walks into a theater (no, not a bar). Armed with a hatchet, a gun, a fake bomb, and pepper spray.

And the injuries sustained by the unarmed customers are: Three people got pepper sprayed, and one has a superficial cut from the hatchet.

Why does a guy bring all those weapons into a theater, and then attack people with the pepper spray?

Was this just a really elaborate suicide by cop?  Pepper spray some people, show them the fake bomb, and don't pull the gun till the cops show up?

Who the hell knows with some of these people.  Certainly wasn't adequately prepared for mass murder though.

Maybe it was some form of interactive live theatre.

Pointing out that this latest one doesn't seem to be a mass shooting. Unless you count the attacker's suicide by cop as a mass shooting.

That's why I threw in the "Etc" part.  While it wasn't a mass shooting, I feel like it would fall into that thread for no other reason than that's how my mind chooses to categorize it.
