Don't forget about Armstrong

Two seasons ago this guy was making some crazy acrobatic catches for us and torching other teams secondarys, despite a horrendous o line and constantly being underthrown by mcnabb and grossman. (Check out the video for some examples.of some great catches made on some tough throws)

And despite.our horrific offense that season, he managed to have some pretty impressive stats. From his wikipedia page.....

2010 Season

Armstrong made his first regular season NFL career catch for 11 yards on September 12, 2010 in a 13-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys and soon emerged as one of the Redskins' primary deep threats. He recorded a career long 76-yard reception against the Philadelphia Eagles on November 15, 2010, finishing fourth among all receivers with 7 receptions of 40 yards or more for the 2010-2011 season. Among receivers with at least 20 receptions over the season, Armstrong finished third with 19.8 yards/catch.

Lately tho, every time ive seen a post about receivers for next year this guy never even gets mentioned. I completley understand and agree with the FO's decision to go out and get some new talent at receiver, but am I really the only one who DOESNT think hes completley dispensable and has no shot making the team? I know last year he wasnt nearly as involved with the offense but i think this was due largely to his hamstring injury. The few games he did play in he was very effective (week 1 againt the giants, week 12 against the seahawks)

I certainly dont think he should breeze into camp thinking hes guranteed a spot, but I also dont think hell go away without a fight. With his speed and knowledge of the playbook, I really think hes got alot to offer the teams recieving game in the upcoming season. Especially when combined with a qb who can extend the play and accuratley throw deep to him. Im definitley in his corner for him to make the squad, dude's ridiculously overlooked, dont count him out!!

This article has him running a 4.25 .....

Heres one of him and banks debating which is the fastest on the team....

The strength of Griffin's game is the deep ball, and AA is a real weapon at that. It seems like common sense to keep as many players as you can who fit RG3's gama. And especially a minimum salary vet who's been productive.

My thoughts as well

Damn it just seems he feel out of favor last year. Gonna be quite the battle in camp/preseason.

Teams had him figured out after the first year. He's got to be able to beat bump coverage to even think about staying around now.

For me he is not in the top 5 WRs we have now on the roster

Garcon

Gaffney

Hankersoon

Morgan

Moss

Paul is my 6th top but will mostly get Special Teams action IMO

Austin and and Armstrong have a real fight on their hands to either make the team or push for a 7th WR to be kept on. Banks is definitely gone. He wasn't that effective with the rules change and is not a threat as a WR.

Aldrick Robinson's best chance, IMO, is to make the practice squad and see what he has to offer if someone goes down

My guess is they keep 6 with Robinson on the practice squad and 2 are traded for other player at diff position or future picks. I think Armstrong could definitely earn us something good if he is the one determined to be a luxury at the WR spot

We need to try to trade a few of these WR's, if there is a market for them.

Obviously Garcon, Morgan, Hankerson & Paul are keepers. (they are all very talented & under the age of 26) We can develop these guys with RG3.

That leaves 4 more spots, presuming we are carrying 8 WR's. (like we have been)

Moss

Gaffney

Armstrong

Banks

Austin

& Robinson

Now, Robinson can go to the PS.

That means 1 of those 5 has to go @ a minimum.

Moss=true Redskins, with still stuff left in the tank. True vet that can guide the young pups.

Gaffney=1 hit wonder much like Armstrong. Do you keep him?

Armstrong=See Gaffney

Austin=Very skilled guy, but just hasn't put it on the field in reg. games. Probably the odd man out....

Banks= KR/PR specialist that can be used as a gadget guy.

I think you have to keep Moss, unless you can trade him for good value.

I think one of...Austin, Armstrong or Gaffney have to go. (be it cut or traded)

Question is...Which one?

At least, that's what I would do.

WOW!! I didn't know/realize we kept 8 last year.

I really liked the thread last year where we guessed who was selected to the active roster.

yeah i agree with that. I know he had a hamstring injury that got him out near the beginning of the year after he caught that bomb against the giants. From what i remember it seemed like he thought he was healthy and ready to go but the coaches kept him out of the rotation till he had that big game in week 12. As for that depth chart a few posts back, im not convinced moss AND gaffney will both be here next season, and while the team certainly has more invested in hankerson than AA, from what ive seen of the two in actual game day situations id give the edge to armstrong. Not saying hankerson doesnt have a higher ceiling (he definitley does) but in terms of being able to immediatley contribute and help.a.rookie qb i think armstrongs got better hands and playbook knowledge at this point..... just my opinion of course i may be bias and it should be noted that im probably the only person in the world that has an armstrong jersey lol

its a numbers game at this point - now that we got Garcon and Morgan.. he had a chance to improve on his first season and regressed.. I simply don't see him making the team.

exactly... he just didn't get it done. where he had ALL the opportunity last year.

This may be true, but let me put another thought out there.

Armstrong's early hamstring injury set him back. His game is based on speed and he couldn't generate enough with that lingering injury. Look at how they used him in the preseason. Armstrong was catching things deep, short, crossing, slant, and everywhere. In the regular season, the hamstring really hampered him in the first few games.

When he finally did come back the role he was given was the long man. He got open deep a lot. Grossman always grossly underthrew him so much so that the man he beat by five yards got an easy pick.

I'd say almost half of Grossman's picks would have been touchdowns if he had either thrown the ball earlier or had just a little bit better arm. If Grossman could throw ten yards further, we'd all be hailing Armstrong's incredible year and being one of the leaders in the NFL in touchdowns.

He turns 29 tomorrow.

He has a whopping two years pro-experience, with a massive 13 career starts.

He regressed badly last year, failing to get separation from most anyone.

We're building a quality young receiving core, in line with the rest of the team, augmented by two proven vets here.

Anthony Armstrong won't be on this team in 2012.

Forgotten him already.

Hail.

*Edit* And the other receiver in your OP, Brandon Banks, will be looking for work elsewhere too.

He didnt fall out of favor, he got caught in the Rex Grossman zone, or lack of a deep ball thrower.

With RG3 I don't think that will be an issue.

I'd love to see him make the team.

With two 5th year players now on the team, I don't see why we need to "augment" with two older and expensive recievers.

Aww man Rufus, yout preaching to the choir. I'd be looking to ship Moss and Gafney, as grateful as I am for what they've done here, for anything I could get.

But I doubt they will go into this year without the vet. security they seem to like.

It's just a ridiculous amount of "vet leadership" they would seem to feel they needed for basically a veteran corps at this point.

If they are both back, AA is almost surely gone. But again, I think at least one of them should go.

13 Armstrong, Anthony WR 5-11 185 28 2 West Texas A&M

18 Austin, Terrence WR 5-11 175 23 2 UCLA

16 Banks, Brandon WR 5-7 155 24 2 Kansas State

10 Gaffney, Jabar WR 6-2 200 31 10 Florida

0 Garcon, Pierre WR 6-0 210 25 4 Mount Union

85 Hankerson, Leonard WR 6-2 209 23 1 Miami (Fla.)

0 Morgan, Josh. WR 6-1 215 26 4 Virginia Tech

89 Moss, Santana WR 5-10 205 32 11 Miami (Fla.)

84 Paul, Niles WR 6-1 224 22 1 Nebraska

11 Robinson, Aldrick. WR 5-10 184 23 1 Southern Methodist

Last year we kept 8 WRs. We've already added two to that list. Very possible that we don't keep 8 this year.

And Armstrong is the 3rd oldest out of that group while the team is in a youth movement.

Who?

:)

In all seriousness, I think AA will struggle to make the team. He couldn't get off the line early last year, and because of that struggled to get on the field. The Seattle catch was really the only highlight I can think of from him last year. With the moves we've made this offseason, I think he may be one of several receivers from last year to be left off the roster this season.
