Daniel Day Lewis is a genius, it's unfortunate that everything else, short of the cinematography, is a full echelon or two away from him. The rest of the cast is just bad or flat. No one, short of Jared Harris as Grant, comes close to creating something interesting with their roles. "Hey look! It's Dale from Breaking Bad, it's Tommy Lee Jones in a wig and a couple of nut sacks under his eyes, is that James ******* Spader?!?!" The story itself is also just completely uninteresting. The main crux is a battle in the House over the passage of the 13th amendment but it just doesn't connect AT ALL. Mediocre actors play reps who's moral compass and struggle on this very important issue is conveyed with no more than a "I just **** myself" face. There is one scene in the film that is so poorly filmed that it seemed pulled from a modern day sitcom where Jones, as Thaddeus Stevens, comes back from the ratification to hand the bill to his wife, a black woman who reads it to him as they both lay in bed in their pjs. It seemed like something out of Curb Your Enthusiasm, and the ending? Having Lincoln appear from the flickering flame of the oil lamp on his death bed? Like something out of an insurance commercial. A complete biopic, even if in two parts, would have been in order OR just put this on HBO. I have a fever and MORE DDL as Lincoln is the prescription. Lincoln Lawyer, Lincoln v Douglas, the Gettysburg speech, secession, the war.....those are the touchstones that needed to be shown. You don't make a movie about Jordan and show him playing baseball and ignore the 66 against the Celtics and the battles against the Pistons and Knicks. An oscar for DDL if it's not Phoenix's. Had a free preview weekend of all the movie channels (HBO, CInemax, Starz, etc), so when I see this I usually record a bunch of them on the DVR. I found about 10 or 11 movies to record. Watched so far: Project X Moneyball Have on DVR to watch: My Idiot Brother 21 Jump Street Fantastic Journey 2 New Year's Eve (for the wife) The Sitter Three Stooges Robin Hood (the most recent version) (and a few more I can't think of this morning) I recently watched all the James Bond movies from the 1st up to Casino Royale. I'd had seen parts of them in the past, but never watched any from beginning to end. Sean Connery is the best one. Surprised at how well Timothy Dalton was. Liked Pierce Brosnan. Roger Moore always looked too old for the role. The one George Lazenby was decent, but he was, I don't know, weird. As for the last few Bonds with Daniel Craig...I can't stand his Bond. He's mean, surely, angry and overall a jackass. Bond is not supposed to be a jackass. Anyway, flipping channels last night and caught the end of The Karate Kid on AMC. "Sweep the Leg" Kobra Kai. Momma There Goes That Man Posted January 17, 2013 Share Posted January 17, 2013 Picked up Beasts of the Southern Wild last night on Redbox after hearing some good things about it. I really enjoyed it. It was well acted, unique and very moving and its one of those movies that can be interpreted a lot of different ways depending on the person watching it. I too was surprised at how much better the Timothy Dalton movies were than I remembered. He was a great Bond. His bond was the right mix of dignified, debonaire, and tough. More relatable than Connery's Bond--a reflection of the 60s vs the 80s. Roger Moore was alright but really just too dapper and unathletic. Not tough or serious enough. Too old. But he's a good dude. He even jokes about being too old for A View To A Kill. Connery was great but his Bond was a huge ******* too. Had rough edges. His movies were also the best and he benefits from that. Bond hadn't become a cartoon character by then. It was still fresh and the good ideas for taking over the world hand't been used up. Dr. No is an objectively great movie. Almost like a Hitch**** movie in feel. Pierce Brosnan was also on the Roger Moore side of the Bond spectrum of being a little too dapper and a little too old. Plus those 90s Bond movies were so full on campy it hurts him. Goldeneye was great though. Lazenby was apparently so difficult to work with that I think it effected the quality of OHMSS. Momma There Goes That Man Posted January 17, 2013 Share Posted January 17, 2013 The last movie I saw in the theater was Gangster Squad and while it had its moments, and I like just about anything with Gosling in it, I was ultimatey disappointed. But he's a little too prissy at times whereas Connery has the right amount of natural panache. The new Bond movies try to tell it too often with Craig rather than show it. Yeah they are worth rewatching. They've got that mad men quality to them. Bond was really a swashbuckler and he was refined and smooth but also a man's man. And totally unflappable. The most out of sorts you'll see him get is a heavy sweat on his forehead as Goldfinger is about to slice him in half at the nuts with an incredibly slow moving laser. Contemporary movies and 60s movies both place a ton of emphasis on certain types of realism. The new Bonds will go for gritty technical realism with the combat and the way scenes are staged but the scope and pace and character interaction will be ridiculous. 60s movies seemed to be very unstylized in the actions and tasks the characters perform but there will always be a theatric element to the action scenes and there is a lot of that 1960s censorship and unspoken subtlety that gets left out. What's fun about watching an a-hole run around with a chip on his shoulder? His character is too "rogue" for the Bond role. Bond is supposed to be suave, sophisticated and debonare, not a jerk. Although I do agree with what someone said that Connery had an edge to him, but it wasn't an a-hole edge, more of a "I'll always be better than you" edge. Craig over Connery?!? I feel like Im taking crazy pills. Connery IS Bond, all the other guys are just actors. Connery was the best IMO. I think his character had all the qualities you would look for in a Bond. It is hard to compare movies from the 60's until now because like stevemcqueen1 said, the way movies are made has changed so much. Mr. Sinister Posted January 17, 2013 Share Posted January 17, 2013 (edited) I think Craig's Bond is more based around the novels from Ian Fleming, and how the character was originally meant to be portrayed, or so I've heard. I like his rough and rugged style, and the new (at least visually) twist that he's brought to the Bond films, but I do miss all of the glitzy, gadget-y suave that was there when Pierce Brosnan played the role. I'm not a "Bond head" so to speak, so I can't make a claim of who was better. All I can say is that that Dalton guy turned me off the most. Craig leaps off the screen, and for that, I will giv e him mad props,even though I would just love to see him operate a watch that doubled as a flamethrower or something along those lines. Kind of like Outbreak, but not really. This movie actually reminded me a lot of the movie Babel, which looks at a series of interrelated story lines across the globe. A pretty slow-moving and bleak story, but I thought it provided a more realistic look at how quickly and easily a deadly virus could start to spread, and the impact of the epidemic on every aspect of society. JCav06 Posted January 18, 2013 Share Posted January 18, 2013 (edited) I saw this movie a few weeks ago: A recently freed slave with the help of a bounty hunter travel the country to rescue his wife from a plantation owner. Personally, I felt that the plot was too simplistic to warrant a three hour movie. I thought that there would be another sub plot that wasn't revealed to us in the trailers. While there were a few scenes that had me rolling (Samuel Jackson's character was hilarious as well), I left the theater wanting more. 2.5/4 stars. Sorry if the picture doesn't come up.
