CrypticVillain
Brees, Brady, Manning and Rodgers have an outside chance I figured that. I don't know about Manning and Rodgers. Manning is going against the Jets and Cowboys in windy New Jersey and Rodgers might not even play that much these last two weeks....... Wouldn't be surprised if Brady and Brees broke the record this week. *I just saw Brady's yards, it might take him two weeks. But since he is on both of my Championship Fantasy League teams, I hope he does throw for 500.
HailGreen28
Hey, go ahead and put that asterisk on Emmitt Smith's record. It's still either Payton's or Brown's, then. Smith was always second best to a contemporary (Barry Sanders) anyways.
Redskin4ever
Marino had to break someone's record, and the rules had changed from whoever that guy was. So Marino should have an asterisk. If we are going to dish out the asterisk, you are right. Records being broken are a sign of how the game has changed and what this era is all about. We are in a passing era. Marino was in a passing era too. Compare the passing in the 80's and 90's to the decades before that. The game changes over time. What if Cam Newton and Tim Tebow change the game so that QB's start breaking more and more rushing records. Then we see more and more running QBs again. When those records are broken, we can look back in time and see that the QB position became more athletic than before. It's all a cycle of how the game goes. This asterisk talk is just about people not wanting to give Brees the credit he deserves. Their guy was obviously better because they liked him more than this guy. AsiaticSkinsFan
Just as long as they put an asterisk beside Marino's record because of the 1978 rule changes that he and every other QB in the 1980s benefitted from. And give credit to the most underrated QB in NFL history, YA Tittle

kubstix
I have a friend who asked Marino for an autograph when he was like 6 years old and Marino's response was, "Yeahhhh, first give me 50 bucks kid." Marino is a prick.
Mania
If you do that you might as well say that Marino passed for that many yards because he never handed off due to not having a running game.......please.
Sticksboi05
If you do that you might as well say that Marino passed for that many yards because he never handed off due to not having a running game.......please. That's not a great analogy. The article discusses rule changes that affect the game for every team. Besides, having a good running game would help in some ways no? Obviously today's game is as passing heavy as ever but an asterik is surely not needed. Marino had advantages over QB's prior to him. As Fouts did before. It'd be like putting an asterik over Gretzky's records because he played in a high-scoring era. Just as dumb. Brees is a fantastic QB that will be in the HOF one day at this rate. Scary that he's not even going to be MVP. Brees is 98 yards/game over today's NFL average. Marino was 90. The fact that the record stood for 27 years is testament enough. terpskins10
Congrats, Brees. I'm glad you were the one to break it and not that Brady character.
Renegade7
If it was really that easy, everyone would be doing it, right??? exactly. Hater.
Warhead36
What people don't seem to point out though is that pass rushes have become much more exotic nowadays. Everyone blitzes and cooks up ridiculous schemes and the overall talent level of pass rushers is better than it's ever been, making it harder on QBs. No asterisk needed. Brees is simply sensational. NavyDave
Man can you imagine Marino playing with these liberal passing rules and they were enforced back then? The record would be like that of Dimaggio's or Cy Young, unattainable. This record will not stand for another 27 years because after Brees retires, the new and improved rules will have defenses not being able to blitz as we see in the pro bowl. zCommander
Congrats, Brees. I'm glad you were the one to break it and not that Brady character. Well Brady is only 200 yards away from Breaking Brees record. Hopefully Brees can continues to add even more yards to his record so Brady doesn't catch up to him in the last game of the season. kvarlo12000
I feel privileged to be a skins fan and remember watching Monk get his record on Monday night, and to live in New Orleans and see Brees do the same thing. They are both class acts. Brees is the best thing that has happened to New Orleans.

C26 Run
This is so ridiculous and completely unfair to Drew Brees. He didn't make the rules of today's NFL. No asterisks should be involved with any records Brees breaks unless it's performance enhancement drugs. Brees broke a 27-year record while playing in the same league with Peyton and Brady. The man deserves all the credit he earns. :helmet:

skinfan2k
2 out of the 3 redskins superboowls shouldn't count since they were strike-shortened seasons.
Sunburn
Ridiculous. Marino killed the record that Fouts had just killed because of the death of the dead ball era. By this logic Marino should have an asterisk because passing was harder in Joe Namath's day.
JerseyGator
Three on the Saints OL were just named to the Pro Bowl. But I thought the Saints OL was horrible and it was all Brees. Aren't elite QBs gods?
