ESPN has dropped Hank Williams Jr. from opening Monday Night Football tonight after Williams controversial comments today about President Obama.Says ESPN, in a statement: "While Hank Williams Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize he is closely linked to our company through the opening to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result have decided to pull the open from tonight's telecast."

Williams, perhaps best known for his "are you ready for some football?" lead-in to ESPN's Monday Night Football, Monday compared this summer's so-called golf summit between Obama and House Speaker John Boehner as "one of the biggest political mistakes ever."

As Williams put it on Fox News' Fox & Friends: "It would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli leader) Benjamin Netanyahu."

When asked on Fox to explain his analogy, Williams said Obama and Vice-President Biden are "the enemy."

Although ESPN has a policy about its on-air personalities getting involved in politics, Williams has said he's interested in running as a Republican in 2012 for a U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee.

when I was a kid in Hebrew School and we'd do fundraisers in the 80's, they'd let the kids vote on what we'd use the money on. Planting trees in Israel, rebuilding the playground for the little kids, or Nazi Hunters......and I think you can guess what we voted for every time.

You want to dislike a politican.....awesome. Go for it. Bash their policies. Bash their experience. Bash anything in reality. But the whole comparing elected officials in the United States to Hitler is just beyond stupid. He has the right to say whatever he wants....and ESPN has the right to not use his opening because they want people American from both sides, and internationally to watch. So......sorry Hank. Your bit was old anyway.

His comparing Obama and Biden to the three stooges was the best part though. That at least was funny because he's clearly a stupid one-trick pony.

I read the original comment and thought it was over blown, I thought maybe he's just not very creative with his analogies. His explanation is probably what sealed the deal.
Agreed on all counts. Some advice: don't use Hitler. It never ends well.

WHY do people always compare politicians they hate to Hitler?

Get creative people. This Hitler schtick is tired.

Low hanging fruit. Simple as that.

I'm trying to think of some creative comparisons. Thoughts? Be cool to see someone drop a Le Duan reference. Something semi-obscure.

One of my favorite things every month is that one guy who stands outside Foggy Bottom metro all day with the Obama = Hitler signs. Dude makes an ass out of himself in front of thousands of people. Not a single person gives him the time of the day. Last week we had a group of about 10 people stand at our campus quad with huge signs declaring Obama's policies as Marxist.

People have lost their damn mind.

True.

The video makes him seem like a 100% douche though so I have no problems with him being fired.

The Hank Williams Jr. song that has opened Monday Night Football for 20 years will not be part of the opening of this week's Indianapolis-Tampa Bay game after Williams made controversial comments about President Barack Obama.

Williams compared Obama to Adolf Hitler on Fox News Channel's "Fox and Friends" show Monday morning.

ESPN, in a statement, said: "While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football. We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight's telecast."

Williams, whose song "All My Rowdy Friends" has been the Monday Night Football theme on both ABC and ESPN since 1991, told "Fox and Friends" that he thought Speaker of the House John Boehner playing golf with President Obama "would be like Hitler playing golf with (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu ... In the shape this country is in?"

Told by anchor Brian Kilmeade that he didn't understand the analogy, Williams said: "I'm glad you don't, brother, because a lot of people do. They're the enemy." Asked who, Williams said: "Obama. And Biden. Are you kidding? The Three Stooges."

Boehner played golf with Obama in June at the height of the national budget debate in Washington D.C.

Williams, from Tennessee, has said he would run as a Republican for the U.S. Senate in 2012.

Later in the Fox interview with Williams, anchor Gretchen Carlson told Williams he used the name of one of history's most hated men to describe the President.

"Well that's true. But I'm telling you like it is," Williams said.

Williams has been critical of Obama in the past. He campaigned for Sen. John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin in 2008, even changing the words of one of his songs, "Family Tradition," to blast Obama and the Democrats for the financial crisis the country was facing prior to that year's election.

On the plus side, he is about to get a ton of fervent new fans on FreeRepublic.com.

Wow...ESPN is ‘extremely disappointed’ that Hank Williams ‘spoke his mind’ and ‘offended’ Dear Leader.

I am extremely disappointed that ESPN GIVES hours of ‘air’ (read propaganda) time each March to Baracketology.

I guess this is one vote I will cast with my remote.

Monday night football? Is that still on? I stopped watching after Dandy Don Meridith quit. :-)

Seriously though, ole Hank was just following an old family tradition. Calling a spade a spade. Whoops!!! Oh dear I think I just went rogue.

Tell them all to BOYCOTT DISNEY. Drop their cable subscriptions to ESPN and write the advertisers.

Since they moved it from ABC to ESPN cable only, a majority who don’t have cable or Dish network won’t know he isn’t on.

I’m with Hank and he better not apologize to get back the gig.

NFL is skating on thin ice.

If the right is smart, it will destroy them.

They are nothing but an extension of the slave trade, with no guarantee contracts and extreme violence against blacks.

Somebody over there had better find a clue quick, because if Hank Jr doesn’t sing tonight, the NFL might as well start using a soccer ball, because NASCAR NFL fans WILL REVOLT.

Oops...looks like big girls and Disney/ABC/ESPN got their panties in a twist over HANK expressing his 1st Amendment right to what he believes!!

I'm tired of the PC BS that's filled Monday Night football anyway. Too much other good stuff to watch anyhow.

F'm all!

F MNF.

As far as I see it, it won't be long before there will be anybody who has anything nice to say about the punk marxist POTUS. At least Hitler didn't put this country into a depression.

This was an absolutely ridiculous comparison by Hank Jr.

Hitler loved his adopted country of Germany.

Obama hates America.

A better comparison may be Stalin, or (economically) Mussolini.

Hank Williams has his opinion, and it just happens to be based on facts, at least when it comes to wanting to control the individual lives of citizens. Didn’t Obama say his base needs “to go to war” with conservatives?

He’s a self-admitted socialist. Here is a clue: NAZI is short for “National Socialists”.

And just look at who he has surrounded himself with: A bunch of radical socialists, including real terrorists who murdered law enforcement officers and preach violence against the United States.

Entertainers who engage in political commentary must be willing to deal with the consequences.

So must a network that bows to PC. We've watched out last MNF game.

Can somebody please find something stupid Faith Hill said/did so we can stop with her 12 minute intro song on SNF?
Mute it because she ain't bad to look at at all.

I had her as my over-40 choice in the Babe Draft, and she didn't get many votes. :(

Serious response:

ESPN made this an issue.

I would likely have missed this completely, if Schefter hadn't read the statement on Countdown.

Silly response:

Big move from a network that compares a broke-dick QB like Tony Romo sits to pee to Jesus Christ, daily.

:D
