The real shame is Bertans went 0 for games 2 and 3 and the Wizards were blown out as a result

They need someone other than Westbrook or Beal putting up points

They need Bertans to cut to the rim, and get some off ball screens so their best shooter isn’t jacking up terrible contested threes on half his attempts.  They need plays for Rui the too, at least include him in a pick and pop game.  The Wizards do not lack offensive options, they lack a coach that knows how to use the pieces he has.

what the Wizards lack is defense.

Whether Bertans is making shots or not, his presence on the court draws attention and helps open up the middle of the court.

This just isn't really the case cause they don't really run plays. One guy might have to stay on him closer, but he isn't this great game changing presence.

Yeah that one guy who has to stay on him isn't going to help out on a double team in the paint with Bertans out there.  He's going to stick with Bertans most of the time and if he doesn't, Bertans will be open for a 3.

Who are teams gonna be double teaming in the paint?

Beal and Wilson draw double teams all the time when driving to the hoop.

There was a reason Rui was wide open to nail that 3 to put em up by 6 late, because his man was in the paint trying to help defend Beal.

That happens all the time.

Right and teams still slide a big man over cause the Wiz big men generally stay near the rim. If Bertans was pulling a center out, I'd agree, but he's not. Gafford has more value in helping when these guys drive.

Well, in a fantasy world where we had competent coach who actualy ran plays, you could imagine a scenario where driving Beal/Westbrook could either dump off to a big man or initiate an outbound ball movement to get the ball to the open man who is supposed be covered by a defender caught rotating late amidst the collapse towards Beal/Westbrook driving in the paint, but alas we have Brooks, so we could probably have Kwame Brown stand out there for Bertans.

Gafford could still be in there with Bertans though...

Did you see the screens Kwame set though???

I'm not arguing Bertans can't be useful like you are talking about. I'm saying the coaching staff doesn't really seem to think in those terms. How many times are we seeing Beal or Westbrook drive and kick it to none 3pt shooters that proceed to launch a 3 pt shot? There was an end of game situation in the last month or so where Westbrook drove and kicked it to Ish for a 3. That's what this staff does.

Speaking of 3s - why does Westbrook even shoot 3s?  I don't think I have ever seen him make a 3 pointer as a Wizard.   Like ever.

Beal kicked it out to Westbrook mid to late in the 4th yesterday and he launched a 3 from the side. There was no doubt it wasn’t going in. It’s extremely frustrating watching him shoot threes.

That tweet would be good news if what followed the logical thought wasnt “the wizards have to win 3 in a row”

Doc Rivers has lost being up 3-1 before.  Just sayin.

(I don’t expect this to happen.)

Yeah I’ve listened to a breakdown of his playoffs. Considering who he’s had… I am unsure why he’s considered such a great coach

it I recall the only records he holds are of failing spectacularly when up with a dominant team…

One defender not dropping down and staying out by the three line is creating space by definition, so Bertans does warp the defense.  He is being woefully under utilized though.  The league is filled with shooter specialists and they sure as hell aren’t used the way the Wizards do with Bertans.  Teams set them up for open shots.  That’s the entire point of having a player like that.

Sixers can easily beat us at home without Embiid. They'd be nuts to play him even if he's ready to go.

Without Bertans we have no shooters out there. Hopefully Ish or Neto finds their stroke. Ish needs to shoot with confidence, I hate when he hesitates when he's wide open. Brad needs to hit some three's this next game if we're going to win. 5/25 aint gonna cut it. Some of those misses were open looks.

Well, yeah, they’re clearly the better team

but we have a better chance now

I mean it’s not like it matters. A miracle 3-0 run results in getting the doors blown off next round.

just rooting for a good game of competent basketball and a win. Looking beyond that with this team is just asking to make yourself angry and frustrated. Not worth it

thats the fun thing about the wizards vs. the caps/nats/etc.. there's zero expectations with this team right now for me. so any more wins are definitely just a lot of icing on the entertainment cake
