Vesely would’ve rung the bell out West in San Antonio or Utah...or really anywhere that had strong coaching/culture.

Why do people still say this? The guy just sucked. He was a terrible pick that night, and a terrible pick after the fact. He was a terrible player. San Antonio squeezes him out for a 8 point 5 rebound per night guy. He lasted 21 games after the Wizards, he just really sucked at basketball

So you are telling me LA called us about Brad, we passed, and they went and gave up the moon for PG13? Man... that would have been an absolutely incredible haul, even if we were to get a little less out of it. We should have made the move.

Fantastic move by OKC. Presti has set that team up for the future. Westbrook + PG was not going to win a championship. If I were the Bullets, I would immediately call up Presti and offer Brad for some of those 1sts. Going into next year with a possible lottery pick, + another 1st would be huge.

Would KL have signed there?  Seems like the PG deal was the one that ultimately got him to LA.  From what I've been reading, KL wouldn't have gone to LA unless PG was there.  Makes me think that the crazy haul for George was to ensure that 1) the LA Lakers were eliminated from the KL sweepstakes, and 2) guaranteeing that KL would sign w/ the Clippers if George was brought in.

I honestly don't think that Beal would have netted nearly the same return.  It's almost a 2 for 1 deal.

However, there has to be a desperate team out there looking to upset the balance of power in the league by acquiring Beal.  Gotta think Shep played this one right by being patient.  I really believe that Beal will be elsewhere by the time TC opens up.

I could be crazy, but for some reason I have it in my head that Davis Bertans is missing some of fingers.

He’s missing part of his right ring finger. Good for delivering the shocker.

I actually remember wanting Bertans all of the way back in 2011.  He was part of a good international class that had Bojan Bogdanovich, Enes Kanter, Jonas Valanciunas, Bismack Biyombo, Donatas Montiejunas, Nikola Mirotic, Tristan Thompson, and @skins199021 favorite player Jan Vesely.  We had a desperate need for shooting at the time, and I remembered thinking that he seemed like a San Antonio-style draft and stash.  We picked Shelvin Mack instead, and the Spurs drafted and stashed Bertans.

He's actually a very good offensive role player.  He's a dead eye long range shooter and FT shooter who never takes bad shots.  Very good off ball player who will help keep our spacing right.  He's also not the disaster on defense that you'd expect from a specialist like him.  He can be a functional cog in a good system.

I don't think having him as a starter is an ideal situation though.  He could probably do it since we're not going to be good.  But he's a bench player on a good team.  I want to keep him for when we hopefully turn it around.  7 million a year is not a bad price to pay for a quality role player.

Tommy Sheppard is doing yeoman's work this summer.  Been creative and opportunistic about jumping on castoffs from other teams to facilitate deals for them.

serious question that I doubt we ever get the answer to: how was Grunfeld allowed to exist for so long?

Shepp has made moves that show him to be a competent individual. why did he and the rest of the front office allow Grunfeld to wipe his ass with the franchise for a decade plus?

this really bothers me. they couldn't posse up and go to Ted to tell him that they clearly knew Grunfeld wasn't just bad, but incompetent? so many wasted years

Ernie was the boss.  Certain power dynamics in the workplace are universal and eternal.

Also... not sure it would have been a good sign if Sheppard had backstabbed his boss to steal his job.  That wouldn't be an indication that we're changing the organization's culture for the better by promoting him.  Katz and Standig talked about how organizations take on the personality of the ones in charge, and that they felt the organization had already started taking on Sheppard's personality.  He's the sunny family man with no ego and the road dog scout.  He's not slick.  He's a workman.  That's fine with me.  I'm also not going to fault him for putting his head down and doing work for a bad boss until he got his chance.

I'm not sure how typical those dynamics are in this kind of space. I wouldnt classify it as backstabbing after a certain point either. Part of being a good head man is knowing when to stand up when **** is obviously going south. I still have a hard time squaring that Shepp could have gone elsewhere and chose to stay behind to be a party of what was essentially organizational malpractice.

Summer league match going on against Zion's Pelicans

Noticed Zion went out yesterday with knee injury so wonder if he's playing today

Thought I saw that they're holding him out for the rest of summer league

That's good to hear on Rui.

I'm taking a liking to moves Shep is making.  But you don't go to your managers manager to take your managers job.  You that frustrated you leave, it's rate holding out until your managers manager sees the light and picks you of all people to take their place versus hiring from outside.

Summer league is such a sloppy game.  A lot of frantic passes attempted only after drives get cut off.

Rui doesn't look like a bad passer or defender in this game.  He’s moving well and getting the ball out of the paint to open shooters quickly.  His shot isn’t falling and he definitely has to get stronger, but both of those things are common impressions of rookies in their first summer league game not named Zion.
