Howard Stern Listening Thread - Stern Signs to Judge Americas Got Talent

USS Redskins

Recommended Posts

The show has been back on for 3 weeks now. I noticed less guests the first week and the show now ends at 10 am promptly... the wrap up show ends right at 11 am. One show I noticed went until about 10:30... The thing I always loved about the show is that there were no contstraints but it seems like they rush through the news part of the show to get out at 10 am.

Also, no more gossip games on Thursdays.

He also said recently that he would not fill the artie chair. I know artie isnt coming back but would love him to. Its not as good without him.

There may be fewer guests, but there have been some great ones so far. Tyler, Ron Howard, Billy Joel, Joan Rivers, and Jay Z were great.

Stern is so last decade and overdone. His show has become nothing more than a NYC based feeble attempt at "shockjockery" in an era where most listeners have a demand for something better.

Yes, His show will always attract some listeners and there will always be devotees that have passion, but his day in the sun ended long ago.

Simply put, his show sucks for the average radio listener.

Spoken by a long term stern listener from way back.

I guess the show could get old if you've listened to it for that long, but having listened to his old shows, he was really bad back then. I guess at the time it was something new and refreshing, but I just find it annoying.

I read it somewhere on the sternfannetwork (those guys know their stuff). Also, Howard is upset with Artie, which he has said several times on his show and has been mention here.

I listen every day, but I don't know what you're talking about. I don't remember the last time I heard him even talking about Artie.

Someone called in last week asking if he had heard from Artie. Howard said he heard from him on his birthday, he said he's doing much better. That's about all he said about it.

The Ron Howard interview was great but I turn off when Joan Rivers is on... talk about lame. To me, the interviews are the most boring part of the show. I dont care about celebrities or porn stars very much... I just love when they address the staff issues and bust on BaBabooey.... Talking about Garys book tour a few months ago were priceless moments on the show...especially his pitch on kimmel... I also love when Howard mimic's his parents.

why do people post in here that dont listen to Stern? Its the howard stern listening thread. duh. no one cares if you dont listen.

Its like an idiot who answers "I dont know" to an online survey...why would you even bother? there are some real morons out there.

Ever stop and think that maybe, just maybe, I wasn't knocking the show? I've never heard it. It could've been the fact that I'd like to hear some reasons why I should listen in.

Or, you could take everything personally and as a slap in the face and whine about it. Whatever floats your boat, USS. Some people are so sensitive. Grow some thicker skin ;)

His point was valid KDawg.

And you seem to be equally sensitive.

Nope. I couldn't care any less. Was just pointing to the fact that what I posted isn't always a negative posting. His opinion of me/my posts is his, and it doesn't effect me one way or the other. Just engaging in conversation.

I've heard good things about Stern's show, for the record. I just don't understand why it's so big. Perhaps one of you could fill me in?

Can't really do it proper justice... listen and find out for yourself

Have you listened to O&A? How does it compare? Similar type of show?

Listened to O&A a few times back in the day when I lived in MA, honestly I wasn't impressed. I'll admit I'm a long time Stern fan going back to the late 80s, so it's kinda hard to get excited over some imitators.

Here's a random question I've been meaning to ask.

I seemed to have missed the episode or back-story involved with that ridiculous horn/cymbal music that they play whenever Robin is introduced for the news, or whenever they're ripping on her. What is that, exactly? Been bugging me for a while, keep forgetting to ask

And USS, while I agree with you for the most part, KDawg is on the up and up. One of the few :)

She went to Guatemala a while back, the music is from some sort of festival or parade she attended

I hear ya... I actually didnt mean that towards you - I was reading a few pages back and didnt really think your post was negative... but either way it is a free country and I should have been more specific.

It's all good. I may have replied a bit more snidely than I needed to. I'm used to the turdballs around here too, you know :)

yah, but you gotta admit it made compelling radio.

I will say, Takei is better on the show when Artie isn't there. It just got crowded with both of them. I keep thinking about who I'd like to see take Arties chair - because I agree it needs to be filled - but I just can't come up with a good name. Artie's genius was that he was a great story teller, but he also had an uncanny feel for when he needed to add more to the show and when he just needed to stfu. He also had a great feeling for what truly was funny. Guys like Greg Fitzsimmons or Jim Breuer, as much as I love them, I don't think have that same feel. They'd most likely end up stepping all over Howard telling stories, etc.

It took Artie a long time to figure that out though. I remember being on Stern boards during his first year or so and people hated him because they thought it was becoming "The Howard and Artie Show." People forget but Jackie never really spoke on the show unless Howard asked him to. Anything funny Jackie had to say usually came out of Howard's mouth. Artie could say whatever he wanted.

The one thing that would be interesting in the "Jackie/Artie" chair would be a more ironic comedian - someone from that Harvard Lampoon school. Jackie was from that really old-fashioned set-up/punchline school that no one uses anymore. Artie was completely confessional. It would be neat to have a Conan O'Brien type who could comment on the show as a show.

Though I think that would be miserable for Howard. When they were trying out comedians for the Artie chair, I thought one of the best weeks was Richard Jeni's. And you could tell that Howard did not click with him at all. In fact, when Jeni killed himself, it seemed like Howard had forgotten he had ever been on the show. It would be really interesting to have Patton Oswalt or someone like him on, but I think Howard would eventually grow tired of it. (I know the show's hallmark has always been honesty, but - lately - I feel like too much of it is driven by the weird lives of everyone involved. Howard's life is utterly unrelatable any longer. Robin has a lifestyle that only extremely rich, childless 60-year-old, narcicistic women can identify with. Sal and Richard can be overwhelming. It would be neat to have someone sort of detached from all the weirdness and able to comment on it. My favorite moments are often when Fred speaks up about how he is uncomfortable with some bit or interview or something. But he's the weirdest one of all possibly so they can dismiss him).

PS I've discovered that you really don't need Sirius. Every important segment on the show ends up on Youtube in about 12 hours. I've been listening to it through my Iphone this way for a month now and it's great.

A few other things.

1- Something that always has bugged me about Robin.... she sucks at reading the news. I mean, that's her freakin' job, and she can't get thru a sentence without a "errr, umm, wait... not sure"... it's maddening. How many years has she been doing this? Does she put ANY work or preparation into her job?

2- Did anyone hear the Sal/Richard prank call where they called the Lt. Gov of Virginia? "meow mix,..." :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

the real crazy thing is that Artie was the voice of sanity on the show

I think a little bit of aloofness / snarkiness in that chair would be a good thing, but not too much. Greg Fitz has a good mix of that, actually. Though I wouldn't want him. Now, someone completely over-the top like that would be excellent on the wrap up show. Actually, if Howard were smart, he would populate the wrap up show with people not interested in constantly kissing his ass. The wrap up show would get 1000% better instantly

Robin gets on my nerves more often than not. Yeah she is annoying with the news, I'm not sure if she digs up the stories herself or if someone does it for her, probably both. But yeah either way it's annoying how she can't get through a story without messing up something.

Overall I just hate how she always thinks she's right.

The call to the Lt. Gov was great

At some point, probably 20 years ago, I think Robin found the news stories herself. Now, I get the impression that she is reading them for the very first time on the air. The News used to be my favorite part of the show, but now, it seems like they just do it out of habit and race through it.

Robin seems like one of those dangerously aware people. She has a habit for being 25 to 50 percent aware of something, which in some ways is a lot worse than being competely ignorant of a subject. I think she reads a lot of headlines and that's about it. Once Jackie left, he lost her foil and had freedom to say any stupid thing she wanted.

The Sports Junkies to me are a show of four male Robins. They seemed to skim the Washington Post or ESPN.com and start talking based on their own stupid conclusions drawn from the headlines.

The biggest difference between the two shows is that Howard is the center of his show, where O&A share the mic, along with usually having comedians in with them.

As for the Stern show on its own, it really is much more interesting and funny than any other morning show I've heard (IMHO). He can make something small, like a disagreement between two staff members, and make it an hour + of good radio. He really likes conflicts and will milk them. As for interviews, he talks too much sex for me (sorry, but the fifth time you've asked a person about losing their virginity or if they like a certain position, it gets old). When he sticks to it, though, he almost always brings out information that you won't hear anywhere else.

If you can, give it a shot (even on YouTube) and I think you like what you hear. The best part of the Sirius show is that he doesn't have to stick to the typical radio set/commercial time frame. If he's going good, he'll go for more than an hour (contrast that to most shows being limited to about 12 minutes, max, at one time).

@ Zoony - I agree with your thoughts about Artie. I really thought that he (and Jackie, when he was there) kept both Howard and Robin in check when they would get a little too full of themselves. It was a great balance that isn't there as much anymore. I do remember hearing him address this issue about a month ago. He basically said that he felt that Artie couldn't handle being on the show without using drugs/alcohol, so he'd rather Artie never return as opposed to getting back to the point where he would try to kill himself again.

It's mostly not her. She'll read a little during the show, but most of the stuff she gets from other people.

I think Fred keeps her in check a little just with the Guatemalan music being played every time she starts sounding a little too full of herself.
