skinsaddict
just sayin - it appears I need to make over a certain amount per year to opt out (or not be taxed on it, but then I wouldnt get any SS). I, for one, will never ask for that money, and I look at my retirement as my responsibility. so whats the deal? is there a form I can sign or something? brandymac27
According to this you can't opt out: http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=435&p_created=974129735&p_sid=S-iYjaJi&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MjMsMjMmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPTMsMSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PTIuMSZwX3NlYXJjaF90eXBlPWFuc3dlcnMuc2VhcmNoX25sJnBfcGFnZT0x&p_li=&p_topview=

MurrayH81
Two ways: 1. You can hide so far out in the sticks, and not make any money or file taxes. 2. You can give up your US citizenship and move to a different country.

Metalhead
Hmm, get out of the country? The money won't be there anyways. Right now old people don't want to work until they die, so they're making us work forever. Talk about selfish, lol.
skinsaddict
exactly the point. I look at the people social security is suppose to help now and in future generations and realize - if I dont take care of myself and my family, there is going to be nothing left for me. this IS america, so you should be able to opt out. I mean, that is 6.5% I could really use these days. and  at anyone who is counting on social security in 40 years.

SnyderShrugged
why would you think that its wrong that you have to pay a huge sum of your hard earned money into a system that you will most likely never benefit from? I think both Baldwin and Barr support sSI reform that allows opt outs btw
Lombardi's_kid_brother
Everyone realizes that SS is not a retirement account, right? There is no little account in Washington with your name on it. Which is good, because the average SS recipient will receive several times more than they put into it. Provided it still exists when you retire of course.
Rocky21
I have often said if the gov. pays me back everything I've already paid into social security, I'd call it even and never ask for a cent from them in my retirement.
