City Paper: "Snyder: Hunter, Gatherer, Ruiner"

A am no Snyder supporter, but some of the bashing is just petty.

You go to games in Raljon, I mean Landover, because The Jack built it there.

The stadium with all its flaws are so because the Jack built it there.

Even with 20K less seats, given the performances we have, yall would still be complaining.

Carry on with Snyder bashing.

Chip,

Thanks for the feedback. Despite your insinuation otherwise, you do seem very much the Snyder supporter.

I am not.

Please re-read my earlier post. It is what I think about when I think of the first ten years under the Snyder regime. I don't think it's petty but everyone has their own opinion.

Here ya go:

And before you ask, yes, all the construction helmets had the logo on one side like the Steeler's helmets and all the workers wore one. It was really cool.

I don't have any pictures directly of the inside, the guy I donated some cash to asked me not to, and I only had a few minutes.

Very cool, thanks. I remember nice architerctural touches like the iron gates with the Steelers/Panthers name embedded throughout that added a nice touch. The steps behind the scoreboard in the one photo lead down to the river where ferries dock to let passengers off. You could catch a ferry from Station Square, where we stayed, to the stadium.

After the game, we stood along the railing of the spiral walkway looking out over downtown Pittsburgh while below us the drum corps from both Michigan State and Pitt formed drum lines on the lawn between the stadium and the river for a friendly little competition. So we listened to the rat-a-tat of the drums, the coolest sound in the world, as the fans filed out of the stadium below us. We saw Spartan basketball coach Tom Izzo with his wife in the crowd below (I was with Michigan State fans), so he looked up and gave a hearty wave and fist pump in response to our calls. It was a great day at a cool stadium.

I can only speak to places I have been.

The "gist" of your complaint is ultimately a result of location. Blame the DC Mayor for that.

As far as food/concessions. I have eaten crappy overpriced concession food in baltimore stadium. Asthetically the stadium is more pleasing, but I am not going to the stadium for asthetics.

I watched the Redskins lose to the Ravens at Baltimore this year. Believe me I was much more miserable watching them lose there than at FedEx.

FedEx was built in a rush in under an old, bad design. That's not Snyder's fault.

Snyder is the one who looked at it and said. "This is a bad experience for 70,000 people. I know how to fix it. Let's squeeze 22,000 more people inside without doing anything to absorb that capacity."

What Snyder did is take a cheap split level suburban ranch. And fixed it by dividing all the bedrooms in half and turning the family room into a cigar bar.

Almost dead-nuts perfect analogy, except you forgot the bathroom we were left is rarely 100% functional... ;)

Snyder wasn't left the Taj Mahal (either the mausoleum or even the hotel/casino), but he took it and made zero improvements of worth to the fans. Rocky21 hit the nail on the proverbial head.

What would a Snyder-built stadium be like, assuming he can some day get out from under the long term arrangement with PG County, and assuming he has the financial wherewithal to pull it off?

Would he use Dallas' new place as his model, where the lower bowl is almost exclusively reserved for the big bucks patrons? I think he would use it as an opportunity to further stratify the fans based on how much they pay for their ticket in.

Would we be looking back on FedEx with warm nostalgia?

I think it would be a beautiful place, but too expensive for me to go to. What do you think a Snyder-built stadium would be like?

Not petty?

Should I start with the comment about him charging for preseason tickets or should I finish with that?

Selling the naming rights to the stadium?

These are just two of the things you mentioned which oh by the way every team in the league does.

Of course you complain about pricing, we could talk PSL's at every other stadium...but thats a whole new discussion.

It hasn't been a pretty ten years, I will give you that.

Hell, half of the teams in our own division haven't sold the naming rights to their stadium.

Arrowhead, Cleveland Browns, Giants, Jacksonville Municipal, Oakland-Alameda County, Paul Brown, Ralph Wilson. Georgia Dome, Cowboys Stadium, Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, Lambeau Field, Louisiana Superdome, Soldier Field - all not named after some corporation.

I don't know the policies of every NFL team regarding the mandatory purchase of pre-season games by their season ticket holders. I just know that JKC didn't ask the season ticket holders to and Snyder does so I listed it as one of the things that I think of when I reflect back on Snyder's 10 years as owner. It would be a cool fan-friendly move - We don't see too many of those around here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't most organizations charge for PSL's offset the cost of building a new stadium?

Before we say how great it is that Snyder hasn't implemented this policy, let's remember the stadium was already built and quite sold out before he took over. What's he gonna do? Charge a fee to people that are already sitting in the seats?

Also, most teams sell the naming rights to a new stadium to offset building costs as well. That's understandable...ticketholders have to deal with some stupid, corporate name...but at least it's likely a new stadium with nice amenities.

Dan did it to help offset his OWN expense of buying an NFL team.

IMO, selling naming rights to your stadium is bush league. It's a trend I have hated to see develop across the league.

I just can't imagine the Bears playing at AT&T stadium. Or the Packers playing at Exxon Field.

The Stadium thing is something I wish, as a Redskins fan, I could take some pride in. What I'd really like to see happen in my lifetime is a real commitment from the city of Washington to build a proper public stadium within DC. And it named for an ex-president again or something to do with the National Treasures we have within the city.

Both the Chiefs and Cowboys were looking to sell naming rights but so far have failed to come up with a buyer. While the Browns didn't sell the naming rights for the stadium, they did sell the rights to name the gates to the stadium. Jacksonville's stadium used to be known as Alltel Stadium until the contract ran out. Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum has had numerous sponsors: Network Associates Coliseum and McAfee Coliseum.

I thought the Giants/Jets were also working on naming rights for their new stadium. Apparently there was a furor because they were looking at some company which had some sort of indirect Nazi association.

Thanks for responding to his post.

Hence my point about the snyder whining and bashing.

If you want to complain about him not hiring a GM. I am on board. Trading draft picks for aging vets, I am with you. Not showing scores at the stadium...hallelujah..(although some people even try to claim there are NEVER scores when there clearly are). Complain about high concessions! Agree.

But to whine because 10 years ago he charged for practice gets pretty petty.

These are my gripes. Trading picks for Brunell, Jason Taylor, Jason Campbell, Clinton Portis, that running back from Atlanta that ran like 3 times..and on and on...Bringing in clowns like Archuletta and Lloyd and paying them like all stars. Meanwhile almost NEVER resigning guys we drafted.

If you think a new stadium would make things better, well you better get that second mortgage on your home now to pay the psl fee's. And if you think a new owner would be other than a corporate enterprise, you probably wont be so lucky. Dropping a billion and a half on a team won't be easy for future owners. It will have to be sold to a corporation. :silly:

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth ;)

FedEx Field is the world's largest piggy bank.

No one has ever explained to me why Snyder would want to leave a perfectly functional and unbelievably profitable stadium that is not even paid for yet in order to spend a billion dollars on another stadium that is probably only going to be equally profitable at best in this climate.

He can't sell luxury boxes and club seats at FedEx at the moment. Do you think he will be able to sell PSLs at new stadium?

After the debacle with the Nationals, DC is not building any new sports stadiums any time soon. On top of that, no local or state government would have the balls to fund a stadium for Dan Snyder when none of them can balance their books right now.

So...aside from jealously over Jerry's new playpen (which has actually needed for 20 years because Texas Stadium was a small ****hole), why would Danny do this?

Dan is impetuous but is not irrational.

Great post.

Only thing missing is unless the DC Council pays for Danny's new playpen and gives him all revenues. :cool2:

Nobody in the football world outside of the Redskins respects Snyder. You can hear it in their voice when speaking about him.

Maybe his owner buddies who want to compare bank accounts will call him, but he is pretty much despised in the media and you can tell ex coaches have nothing nice to say about him either.

The only person that likes him is Vinny.

Just the one, eh? That's sad. Even I have two, unless either TK or zoony, or both, are lying to me.
