Tandler (A must Read) Black and Blacker

I rarely post articles here in the Stadium but this deserves to be here.

http://redskinsgames.com/blog2/

After cruising a few message boards and listening to some on-air commentary, I think I’ve come up with my definition of a negative person. It’s a Redskins fan who can find all kinds of fault with a game that the Redskins win but refuses to acknowledge any positive aspects to a loss.

These people don’t see shades of grey. It’s not black and white, it’s black and blacker.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s fine to be critical. If all everyone had to say was “Skins rule!”, it would be pretty boring. But when the kneejerk reaction is to rip into Joe Gibbs, the rest of the coaches, the players, Dan Snyder, whoever else may be in the line of fire, no matter what the result of the game is, well, that’s just boring, too.

This frame of mind has permeated the message boards and call-in shows. That’s why these are places that I now avoid. I’m forced to associate with negative people in some aspects of my life. I refuse to volunteer to do so when I don’t have to.

Great blog post from Rich. I felt surprisingly calm and at ease after yesterday's game, and this made me feel even better. Sure I was disappointed we didn't pull it out yesterday, but we punched Dallas in the mouth and made 'em sweat, which is a lot more than people expected out of us.

I sincerely believe we'll beat them when they come up here, regardless of whether they are resting players at that point. Also, if Sean Taylor plays yesterday, we win.

I was furious after the Philly loss, but I feel better after this one. I honestly believe we have a chance now to go on a nice run, starting this Sunday in Tampa. My buddy and I will be at that game, doing our part. GO SKINS.

Though it was a heart breaker..

My wife and step-son had already given up on the game and had gone off to other parts of the house with the last TO TD... I kept hoping and praying that we would pull it off... oh well... at least we had a shot....

I did come out of the game feeling actually better (not worse) than going into the game (wierd feeling after a loss...)

We looked good overall and just need a few more tweaks AND TAYLOR BACK!!

Hap, you've followed this team for a long time, do you ever remember anything approaching this is the past? The Skins have gone through long dry spells before, and God knows there were plenty of TVs kicked in and walls punched but to me the level of infantile vitriol lately is just shocking. It is worse now than the dark days of Norvdom.

It is easy, maybe too easy, to write it off to a generational thing, but I see some of the worst coming from posters (claiming to be) in their 30s and 40s, and stalwarts in their teens so age doesn't appear to account for it.

I totally agree. It's as though people have no recollection of the utter chaos this franchise operating under during the Spurrier era. Spurrier didn't even seem to know the names of most of the players on the team, nor did he seem to care to know them.

At least this team seems to care, and as tired as we may be of hearing Coach Joe talk about "fighting their guts out," there usually is some truth to it. Under Spurrier, I always had the feeling that I cared a lot more than most of the players did.

(I normally do not post on topics like this but..my two cents...)

I think it's a "state of the world" thing nowdays... we all want instant gratification and get completely pissed if we don't get it. Add that to the ever increasing salaries of the players and costs of the tickets (and team clothing).. and people just seem to have a shorter fuse when it comes to not winning.

I still sit back and think we have a chance to win every game (yes, I'm a die-hard homer..) and I 100% support Gibbs (and Campbell). It gets frustrating but games like this last one still give me hope.. I always feel we are just a few tweaks away from rocking and rolling.

If I was GM though... I would not trade away draft picks anymore and stop going bonkers on free agents and "build" a team for the long haul. But the majority of fans nowadays cannot "wait" during the "building" period.

But anyway... HTTR!!!!!

PS - And I do feel injuries have been our downfall this year.... but good teams somehow seem to over come them... hopefully, we still have a chance to overcome ours...

Rich Tandler = the voice of reason.

Agreed. I've been a skeptic about this team for a long time for obvious reasons. However, other than the one year under Schottenheimer, this team finally has an "adult" at the helm and it shows. I'm willing to take Gibbs' shortcomings (many of which he's changed or done better at of late) over the dreck we've had since Gibbs 1.0.

Look, we're finally competitive and at a point where we can talk about what we need to do to get over the hump into the cadre of the elite teams. The reality of the situation is, that's very rare air for this team to be in of late. I suggest we now sit back and enjoy what looks to be an enjoyable ride on the JC express for the next decade.

Personally, this is nothing new. I tend to ignore people who spout the "we suck" type rants. But at the same time the "you're not a real fan" crowd irritate me just as much. The way I look at it, you're a fan or your not. How one person chooses to express their emotion is their business. Doesn't make them any less or anymore of a fan IMO.

I think with Joe coming back a lot of people expected a lot more out of the Skins in a short time. No one now remembers what Joe had to work with in that first year, and if you remember he came in with a mess, poor moral, people who didn't want to be here etc. You don't change the direction of a super freighter as easily as a Ford escort. I think there is a lot of disappointment from people expecting a superbowl in a hurry. It took a while to knock the rust off of Joe, and a whole lot more to get the personnel in place to be competitive.

If you look back to year 1 and now there has been a vast improvement, and we are starting to have some decent players at back up, which we didn't have before. Last year the injuries we had pretty well finished us for the year. This year we have had some really bad injuries, but we are still competitive. I have read some of the most negative things in posts and thread here lately that totally amaze me. I'm not an expert on Football, I don't spend hours watching game film and planning a game plan. I don't know the health of certain players, or have the knowledge of how practice went. However I'm sure a lot of the guys doing a lot of the criticism do exactly that, and are more expert on deciding where we should go for it on 4th and 1 or 2. I mean they played HS and PeeWee football and so they have the expertise to make those judgements. Personally I don't have that knowledge, and I suspect some of these experts in their own mind don't either.

I agree that this loss was ripe with positives. I'd take an ugly win over a good loss any day, but there is hope for the rest of the season.

BUT... two consecutive losses against NFC East rivals can't just be swept under the carpet. At least we didn't lose in the same fashion (clock management, conservative, etc), but it's time that the team officially turns the corner and plays some complete games.

Rich Tandler = the voice of reason.

I just wish I could convince my wife of that. :)

What gets me, and I discussed this in a follow-up post in the blog, is the inconsistency of so many of the negative types. The them a loss is a loss and nothing positive can come from one. But the same people go ballistic when Gibbs kicks a game-winning field goal on first down or whine about the play calling against Arizona.

If you refuse to find anything positive in a loss, fine. But you then forfeit your credibility when you are determined to find all kinds of fault in a win.

Thanks for posting the blog, Hap.

I agree with the above.

It is difficult so over come the negative at times. There are just so many ...........It is like being surrounded by loud voices.

I will be honest, I was one who said that JG had seemingly lost it about 3 weeks ago. Since then, he has proven me wrong. I have seen the O begin to open it up, I have seen the ball move on the ground and in the air, I have seen points score, and the O has begun to develop a bit of the confidence I expected to see more of earlier this season. I am concerned about the D, injuries included, but more so with the coverage schemes. Defensively, we do not seem to be playing as well, and I do not like the cushion given for the WR's we are playing.

Overall, I see hope for the future, with a few breaks, we could be looking at a playoff berth, and realistically, there is no one in the NFC picture that this team cannot beat. The AFC is a different story, but I really dont see anyone taking out the Pats this season.

No it's actually eerily reminiscent of Norvdom. You must not remember. Close games, unable to score enough points, always feeling like we are so close to victory.....or....leads that seem like sure victories only to have the victory snatched away. That was Norvdom.

Honestly, I wonder how a lot of these guys even enjoy football. I mean, it seems like they'll watch to see things go wrong rather than watch and hope the team wins. Then they'll rush to the site no matter if we won or lost, unless of course it's a Detroit type blowout, and ***** and moan about every conceivable little thing. It's really draining to see. It really takes a lot of enjoyment out of this board for me to see so many little whiners go on about so many little whiny things. Most of these people lack proper perspective, and I suspect most of them just enjoy the reaction they get. Either way it's really taking a big chunk of my board enjoyment away. I mean, don't get me wrong, I understand it's ok to criticize, but if you look at the usual suspects, there's rarely ever any perspective. It all negative all the time. I could name a few right off hand right now, but I'm sure we all know who they are.
