Hello all,

Raven's fan here. I posted this on a Ravens forum and it was suggested I post it here.

Thought some would get a kick out of this footage from Griffith stadium.
It's in 2 parts but only about 30 minutes total.
In this game “Slingin' Sammy” Baugh Threw 4 touchdown passes, intercepted 4 passes and had a 81 yd punt.

It's worth noting that this was during war time.
Many players joined the service.
Washington played the "Steagles" twice this year (1943).
The Steelers and Eagles lost so many players to the service that they had to merge that year to put a team together.

Redskins-Lions: Official Game Day Thread 11/14/43

Baugh sucks!!  We need to look to the future!!

It was cool seeing at the end Sammy threw for 4 TDs and made 4 INTs on defense.

Over 35K in attendance......that arguably rivals what we've had at FedEx for some games :)

Someone has to find out why this was Dutch Bergman's only year as coach (replaced Ray Flaherty). He started 6-0-1, then the Skins lost the last three games, won their first playoff game, but lost the NFL Championship to Da Bears.

Great stuff.....thanks for sharing it!

Very confusing. We lost at home to them 27-14 in 1943. I can't find a game anywhere that matches those stat lines from the war years that was played against that team(s). The 4 TD's thing is either wrong, or the date is. But yeah, it's awesome to watch. Wonder how many other great videos like this there are around.

Keep it going with the 1983 NFCCG against the Niners:

And the game against the Bears in the divisional round where DG returned the punt:

Last 2 minutes of Skins-Vikings NFCCG.  The sense of relief coming from Gibbs is priceless:

And the drive that put the nail in the Lions coffin in the NFCCG.....the last time either team made it that deep in the playoffs:

I don't think Sammy will ever "get it" - at least not here in Washington. Did anyone read that telegraph he sent to his family post-game? It was all about how he played and how he was dreading the train ride up to New York. What a diva who refuses to acknowledge his teammates. Mr. Baugh, if I was lucky enough to be the face of the DC franchise and able to make dozens of dollars PER GAME playing this sport that may some day replace baseball, I would certainly be more humble!

So many missed tackles, jeeze. And those safeties were awful. They were playing x-y zone when they should have been playing the b-s screen. Their coaches suck, their players suck, their schemes suck. They should burn that team to the ground, their owner should sell the team.

Re: the odd strategies...

If the clips are starting on first down, then youre looking at football closer to its cousin, rugby. In rugby today it is still commonplace to immediately kick and give up possession in favor of field position if your team is stronger in set plays. This reflects a characteristic of the game at that time that posession was easier to gain and lose. They may well be kicking early for fear of losing the ball too close to their goal line. They may have felt it would be better to stop the Lions at midfield than to risk losing the ball on three plays close to home, or for other reasons related to ball retention.

Yes, a lot of "quick kicks" in the strategies back then.
