Authoring a Chapter in the Rivalry

What a fun game to watch...it was very gratifying to see this team puff out its chest a little bit and not be scared of the one-loss Cowboys on Monday Night Football.

The pre-game show and in-game coverage felt more like a Cowboy Coronation than an October division rivalry game. Despite all that, the Redskins decided to put it all on the line and just play toe to toe with Dallas.

It wasn't perfect, obviously. With the opportunities we had in the first quarter (some of which was certainly a direct result of our play, but we were also very fortunate), we should have been up by two scores virtually all game. Either way, we stuck with it instead of deflating after Dallas grabbed the lead late in the half.

The opening drive of the second half felt like it was right out of 1986. We made some adjustments, steadied ourselves in the locker room, and moved the ball right down the field for a momentum-changing score.

What our short-handed team did last night added another chapter to this historic rivalry. Even though it was clearly a team effort, this will be remembered as the Colt McCoy Game. Double-digit underdogs with our third-string QB coming into a game against a streaking opponent...and we outplayed them all night on national TV. We shed a couple monkeys off our backs in a big spot.

The other unique aspect of this game was the rare overtime game in the rivalry. I only honestly remembered the 1999 opening day fiasco, but apparently we lost recently to Dallas in overtime (27-24 in 2011). Other than that, I can only find one other matchup that needed extra time (a November win in 1975).

All of these factors make this one of the most memorable wins in recent history against Dallas. It will carry much less weight than either win in 2012 and probably comes with a little less hope than the mirage that was the 2008 win in Dallas or 2010 opening night win at home. But, this one will have staying power given the circumstances, national opinions, etc.

HTTR!

Well said TD, and I totally agree.

It's doubtful this is a spring board for the season, but the circumstances for me that surrounded this win were what excited me.  The Law Offices of Amerson and Bash both made some mistakes, but OVERALL looked outstanding.  Trent Murphy wasn't great, but he was decent.  Kennan Robinson was excellent.  Kerrigan was Kerrigan against the Cowboys.  DJax and Jordan Reed were outstanding, as was Garcon when he got the ball.  Compton held his own.  Heck, even Perry Riley made a cameo or too!

Forbath kicked well, Wey punted well, and the teams units tackled.

What's the theme there?  The youth showed the **** up in a HUGE game with the season on the line.  They have heart and fight.

There is some hope for a decent season, not likely a playoff year, but a decent season with the Vikes and Bucs coming up.  If we can find ourselves at .500 in two weeks who knows right?  At least it'll be interesting in December.

But that was the most team win I'd seen in a couple of years.

One thing that stuck with me is that McCoy has some good QB instincts. He under threw Djax a couple times in the first half, but then realized he can just air that thing out and Djax will make big time plays. I also like how he moved around in the pocket. How about that savvy toss to Jordan Reed on the sideline?!! Huge morale boost for the entire team including Gruden. Players seem to believe in him and are playing their hearts out. Defense showed they can step up when it matters. Looks like we can still at least get to that 8 game win mark which would be huge for the team going forward. I'm again proud to be a Skins fan. Let 's take care of business this week in Minnesota. HTTR!!!!!

Exactly...if we rebound from a 1-5 start (following a 3-win season in 2013) to even win 6 or 8 games in year 1, that's VERY encouraging under a first-time head coach. What I love about Gruden is that he seems to bring some toughness to this team. I think he fires the guys up and gives them a chip on their shoulder. There has also been a great feeling of accountability so far...Morris has lost snaps, we've replaced OL and QB, etc.

We could lose by 17 in Minnesota, but for a few days it feels like we can go and have ourselves a season. We are in week 8/9 of new leadership and I'm very encouraged about Jay. A decent year won't exactly be 1981, but it could be a similar accomplishment.

Yep, he seemed to have the body movements of a slightly less athletic Russell Wilson. When he runs, it looks more football-natural than when Griffin runs. Granted, there's no controversy at all, but it's a strength of his that, so far, Griffin doesn't have.

.....

But that was the most team win I'd seen in a couple of years.

I put it all down to moi. :D.

Last night I worked through and missed only my 4th game in 33 years. (Incidentally one was the Cowboys Division clincher in 2012. There's a pattern developing here ..... ).

Next week I shall be travelling to Madrid to follow my other sporting passion during the Vikings game and will miss number 5.

Self sacrifice for the cause.

You all are VERY welcome. :P

Hail.

Whatever happens, this one, as an obvious underdog victory, goes down in the history of the rivalry. It will at the very least be known as the Colt McCoy game.

But it has the potential to be so much more. If Gruden has success, this could be one of the key games in his early career that's always referred to. If Dallas' season goes down the pan, this could be considered the turning point.

Who knows the future directions of these teams. But for once in this rivalry, it's a blissful feeling to be the 2-5 team going into the 6-1 opponent's house and smacking them in the mouth.

You know... Cali took the whole 2012 season off from the message board and I didn't see him on last night.

I'm just saying... more you and less Cali never hurt this board. :P

Yes TD.  Excellent post.

I think its high time to start giving our Head Coach some props.  For all his faults, the guy is a Winner.  Look at the game the squad played last night.  That didn't look like a bottom-feeder to me.  That looked like a team that has started slow, but refused to let its season get flushed down the drain.

How many opportunities did The Redskins have to Win the game?  I counted at least three.  How many did The Hated Rival have?  Exactly.

Let's give our Head Coach some props.  This thing is turning man!

And incidentally, I am on record as stating that Year 1 should be judged by the team's improvement from Week 1 to Week 17.  So I ask the board, have you seen improvement?

This is probably an over reaction but I'm fine with Colt being signed to be the backup for as long as RG3 is here. He can run the same offense because he's also a very mobile QB that likes to escape the pocket. He's not a starter but he's steadier than Kirk. Not as many great throws but a better game manager that let's the other guys win it for him. Most importantly though is that they can run the same plays and don't have to morph into a pass first team running timing routes.

I don't know whether you just gave me props, or dissed me in a backhanded compliment.

Hard to tell. I know you and you always were a sneaky ****er lil' bro'!.

Yes, I want to see more of him to really know (since at this point in Cousins' season, he looked like a potential franchise QB), but it looks like he could certainly be our long-term backup.

In one of the post game interviews with McCoy, someone asked him about Jackson. McCoy said that he didn't realize how fast Desean was, and that as the game went on he realized that you can't really overthrow it.

That said, I still don't think McCoy has enough arm to get it deep to Desean in stride, but at least he realized it!

I remember Cooley said in the preseason that McCoy was brought here to be RG3's backup. Move Kirk for whatever you can in the offseason and roll with RG3 and McCoy.

Colt is definitely the better choice for back up, one good thing that he brings to the table is his scrambling ability, by being a threat to run, Colt opens up the running game for Morris and Helu. I liked that drive in the 3rd Quarter and to me it showed Jay maturing as a play caller, old Jay would have been pass happy, but it seemed like Jay was willing to go back to the run and it paid off, there's a big difference IMO in what we saw Monday Night and the Arizona game where it seemed Jay got really pass happy. It also looked like Jay called the game to the strengths of his players, designed runs for Colt, more zone read and working out of the pistol for Morris. Maybe Arizona was that wake up call for Jay, but since the second half of the Tennessee game the play calling has been night and day.

Haslett hopefully will have enough faith in Breeland and Amerson to continue to blitz, as that stymied Romo. I think on Defense it's simple, we blitz we win

I couldn't quickly find a thread to put this under but this one is just as good as any I suppose. If it isn't i apologize. I DONT want to start up any name debate up again God knows we've heard enough of it. But here's a quick look at the tv ratings.....

http://blog.redskins.com/2014/10/29/redskins-cowboys-monday-night-football-matchup-scores-huge-tv-ratings/?adbid=527618426043252736&adbpl=tw&adbpr=36375662&campaign=social_20141030_34665847

Not too bad for a team that everyone hates the name??

Colt may NEVER play another down as the Redskins starter, but he has notched his legacy in this town as a Dallas Killer! 1 game start, 1 Dallas win and in PRIME TIME! He will forever live on as a legend here!

Of course there is also Breland, Amerson, Kerrigan, Riley and company! All played a huge part in this win.
