Skins Number one Defense through first 2 weeks

Week 3 Rankings.

Well after facing the number one Offense in week 3 the defensive numbers have obviously fallen. But not as much as some of you may have thought before the game. We kicked the Eagles offense further down the list then they did to our defense. The offense under Cousins is soaring right now. The Redskins are currently ranked number TWO in total offense and Number FOUR in total defense! This is a better team then a lot of us think they are. The wins are coming. Starting this week with a poor Giants team. The rest of the NFCE:

Dallas: Defense 21. Offense 12

Eagles: Defense 26. Offense 6

Giants: Defense 22. Offense 25

I like where we stand right now!

If I had enough time to go through film, I would easily pick up the tendencies of Chip Kelly.   He really runs 2-3 plays out of any formation, and just lets Foles decide where to go based upon how the D is playing the formation.

It's simple and when done with Tempo is difficult to defend but I did notice teams are starting to pick up on a few of these things.

Its a thing of beauty in its simplicity. On the surface, that offense looks like total chaos with crazy formations, when in actuality, its just a couple of different plays that they execute very well from anywhere on the field and out of almost any formation.

I don't know about easy but Stanford seemed to figure out a way to beat Chip Kelly when he was at Oregon (there are websites that show how they did it). I hope they are picking the mind of Trent Murphy to find out what to do. They beat Kelly once and his replacement once.

I like hearing this.

Of course the opponents we've played have had A LOT to do with it, but I honestly don't think that this is a mirage.  Do I expect us to be #1 all year?  Of course not - but we have the elements to stay competitive:

1) Our Defensive tackling has made a huge improvement over last season.  And our biggest liability has been cut!

2) The Run Defense looks great.  Obviously, the biggest test comes Sunday. But all they need to do is hold McCoy in check & we've got a legit shot.

3) The Organization was right about the Pass Rush helping the Secondary.  If the D gives half of that production we saw on Sunday next week, then Philly's in trouble!

4) Honorable Mention - Tress Way's punting.  Seriously, if this guy can consistently kick that well all year then Washington is a lock to be in the Top 10 Defenses in points allowed.  Even with mediocre coverage, teams having to routinely drive 70+ against this unit puts our guys in a position to Win most Sundays.

Good point on the punt unit. It looks like we have found a keeper in Way. Hope he keeps it up.

Yup.  The 'hidden element' of the game.  There's a reason why Jacksonville (aside from the Big Play) didn't cross the 50 until after the start of the 4th Quarter; our Field Position Game had kept them hammered into a corner ALL DAY.  If we can dominate Field Position like that, then yes, our Defense has a chance to have a stellar year.

That coupled with an 'average' year in turnover differential could lead to a Season of big things.

agree that hatcher is the big difference here. he is causing chaos in the middle of the line, causing the qb to move into rak and Kerrigan.

let's not forget that with all the hits henne took last week, he never fumbled. we also missed a few picks.

foles better get the ball out fast or he'll be in trouble.

I don't think there's a way in Dallas we're #1, a week from now.

We might be able to hold down Philly's scoring.  But they're going to get yards.

Yeah, I'm not qualified to opine on whether it's Hatcher or scheme or whatever. but we are sure getting more push up the middle than we have been.

We've had a great edge rush for some time. (Sometimes too enthusiastic, in fact.) But the middle is really making a difference.

(Probably ain't breaking our MLB's hearts, either.)

It's all designed to create space.  I'm sure a lot of folks understand the tendencies, but what you show on defense (or, what you choose to take away) will decide for Foles/Kelly what part of the play they are going to run.

In other words, there will always be something open.  Getting pressure with 4, limiting the YAC, and trying to get a turnover are the ways you beat them.

You forgot one big addition...

A cookie for the defense:

In all seriousness, the defensive improvement at all levels (except for one guy, who's already gone) is undeniable. This defense has a chance to be very, very good this year. However, as both Clark and Hatcher have said (indirectly) let's not crown them just yet. Let's see how they look after Week 8 and beyond.

I'm just happy the team learned how to tackle. There have been some really efficient open field tackles where the players are actually wrapping their hands around the player. Forget about the flashy stats like the sacks, I'm more happy that they've managed to remember the basic fundamentals of defense.

Teams come in with good game plans against them but the last two games the Eagles adjusted well after the half. They were down 17 -0 to the Jags and I think 14 - 6 last night against the colts and won both games while looking like a completely different team.
