Offensive Quick Takes: Week 2 vs. Jaguars

These are real quick. I didn't have too long to watch this All-22 film. I may have missed something and I didn't watch in great detail.

-Our quarterbacks had all day to throw the football last Sunday. That was my biggest takeaway. I'm not claiming the OL played a perfectly clean game, but they played solid football.

-In the pass game, Polumbus gave up two sacks and accounted for three quarterback hits. He left a lot to be desired. Although on his second sack he had two free rushers come through to him, but he hesitated too long and barely got a piece of the inside man (which was the right guy to attack, protect inside first) and that inside guy actually got the sack. The third sack may have been either on Lauvao or Cousins, depending on what the protection was. In pass pro, though, our quarterbacks had all the time they needed for the most part.

-Niles Paul dropping a ball when he was wide open still leaves me to wonder about him. Not sure how much, if any, he's changed.

-In the run game, Chester got blown up to often, but did usually maintain his man... Albeit 3 yards in the backfield. Lauvao missed a few blocks and was blown up a few times. Polumbus missed at least three blocks.

-Offensive line penalties: Williams had two (False start and Unsportsmanlike) totaling -20 yards, Lauvao had two (False start and holding [which was declined]) totaling for -15 yards.

-Early in the game, the Jags were playing the boot and the inside zone completely opposite of Houston. They were bending down the LOS hard and thus allowing Cousins to get outside on the boot and Griffin outside on zone read. They adjusted a bit, but I wonder why they didn't just use the same game plan Houston did from the start.

-Morris has good anticipation. Found myself watching film and saying, "wow, look at that hole" and then I'd be confused why Morris didn't hit it. I'd re-watch and see that a defender was coming in free and he saw it and stayed behind his blockers for whatever extra yardage he could get.

-The backside (unblocked) end makes a ton of plays on us in the run game. I'd like to see us account for him a bit more often. Not all the time, but a bit more. We did a little bit of it and I thought it was a nice change.

The one adjustment I would like to see The Staff make is to give Polumbus more help.  Something along the lines of a chip from the back or Tight End.  However, it seems that they're just going to trust that he'll hold up most of the time.

But part of me wonders if Opposing Teams will just keep attacking this point of our OL that's proven to be the weak link of the Offense.

KD,

Is there a reason we haven't benched Chester yet? I mean, it's one thing to not be successful every play, it's another to be 3 yards in the backfield every time.  I mean, would LeRibeus get pushed back like that?

Couldn't tell ya. I said "too often" above, and the actual number was probably 3-4 times.

good look at Polumbus giving up the first sack, don't know what he was thinking.

(Noting that you aren't supposed to quote pictures.)

Granted, I have no clue about the situation, that play. But doesn't that formation just scream for an audible to a handoff?

I feel like it was more than that.  I just went back and watched LeRibeus, in his short stint at LG, he wasn't better than Chester.  On one play he got jammed hard by the DT and lost his footing.  Although I'm sure it's a bit harder when the defense knows you're going to run every play.

Maybe, but it was 3rd and 9 for that play.

At this point I think we're at the point where the bad plays due Polumbus or Chester are so common they should be replaced by someone who may make errors but has a chance to improve with the 1st team reps and game time.

Niles always has had bad hands, so I'll take 9/10 from him any day. Nothing to complain about with Swiss Army.

I beg to differ... I just complained. And it's not that I don't want him to be good. It's that I still haven't seen enough, in my opinion, to prove he's different. Rough hands and fumbles in two weeks. The TD was nice and the yards are good. Mixed bag so far.

Hope he continues to get better, though!

strange...Helu peels out straight ahead, he's got no one around him. Wide open hole.

Helu's job is to pick up any inside rush from the left side of the pocket. He did his job too, he tagged #99 with a nice block. If Helu runs a route instead, then we don't have enough hats to block that blitz and 99 probably comes in free.

That play would have worked too if not for Polumbus. Everyone did their job except him and it led to the sack. For some reason he released his rusher to the outside as if he had help. No TE and no RB on that side of the formation. He just screwed up.

Exactly. That was a slide protection on the right side of the LOS and a solid (or man) on the backside. That means Helu has to look backside (the left in this case) first and pick up anything that comes through. He did just that.

Polumbus looks like he thinks the rusher is too far up field to get to Griffin... But, I have no idea what he was thinking in turning that guy loose. Chester had his area, and therefore his man blocked, heck he even made a nice adjustment to get to him.

Polumbus got some leeway week one as he did halfway decent against the best defensive lineman in the NFL. He shouldn't get any here, though.

Agreed. And being honest, a guy like Polumbus is already going to be giving up enough pressures and ground in the running game where he's just getting beat by guys he can't really match up with. He can't be making many mental errors too.

Polumbus is an easy whipping boy, I kind of feel sorry for him. But I really struggle to see the positives he brings to the table. We all know he's going to lose the job sooner or later. If he's got no future, why is he starting? No one else is ready? I can probably accept that, but won't we eventually get to the point where his replacements won't realistically perform worse than him? And at least with a guy like Moses, you might get a nice mauler where he can be a match up problem himself in the running game.

But to be clear, I definitely don't want the staff to play Moses if he's not ready. So if they don't think he is, then I guess the only option really is to keep starting Polumbus.

The linebacker... outside of the DE... had responsibility for the running back (Helu). He went straight for him for coverage... saw that he was staying in to help block... and peeled off back into coverage. Helu wouldn`t have been open at all.

Not only that, but he showed like he was coming at first. Helu stepped up for him, then he bailed. Helu has to stay in and help at that point. Too late to be an outlet.

one thing that jumped out to me was how the DE for Jax kept biting on our bootlegs ... unlike Houston, who was in Robert's face the instance he rolled out.

They adjusted later in the game, and Cousins was pressured at least twice because of the adjustment.

I'm just saying that we've known what he is for a few seasons now and sometimes you have to accept a players limitations. I think he's exceeding those limitations for two weeks.

Sure he's still a mixed bag, but I'll take anything extra from him. I guess I'm focusing more on the positives he's brought the last couple of weeks.

I too, hope he continues to improve as that helps us. Just trying to get everyone to stop focusing do much on the negatives, especially after a win.

It looked to me like he saw the down lineman furthest to his right cross behind the guy on his right shoulder, and bit on that before adjusting to block the correct man. His head is swivelled to the left, waching the first guy even as he is picked up in by Chester. With his head facing the wrong direction he's not even close to locked onto his man, who is able to knock him back and off balance.

That's a major brain fart.

He was already into the guy after the twist. He looked inside after he was already on that guy. It's truly baffling.

What, you mean that sack on Robert was not Robert's fault???  Say it ain't so.

WRT Paul....think he may be coming around.  Every receiver drops the occasional pass.....Garcon had a couple of drops as well as DJ on Sunday.  But the past couple of weeks, seems to me as if Paul may be more of a success story this season, maybe finally living up to some of the expectations that Shanny placed on him when he was moved from WR to TE.  Especially with the absence of Reed, and the limitations of the Lumberjack at TE.....perfect opportunity for Paul to excel.
