Redskins.com Article: LeRibeus Enjoying NFL Rookie Experience

I wrote an article about Josh LeRibeus, which is running now on Redskins.com.

Here's a taste of it:

For most NFL rookies, draft day is both an exciting and nerve-racking experience. But for Redskins rookie Josh LeRibeus, it was also a confusing one.

There he was on day two of this year’s draft, hoping to get picked up by a team and worried no one would select him until the third and final day. Then, during the third round, the phone rings, answering his prayers. His wait is over, and he’s going to be drafted earlier than he expected. The voice on the other end tells him: “Josh, just hang on the phone, we’re going to have coach talk to you.”

There was just one problem – he didn’t know which coach. In all of the excitement and confusion, he didn’t actually know what team was drafting him.

“I look right up as I answer the phone and the Buffalo Bills, they have their pick coming up,” said LeRibeus. “It just switched to Buffalo. I’m like, ‘Oh [shoot]!’”

Outside of being a big fan of Buffalo wings, LeRibeus didn’t know much about that part of the country. However, having grown up a Denver Broncos fan, he was thrilled to learn he’d been selected by Mike Shanahan. Prior to that phone call, LeRibeus didn’t even know Washington was interested in him, though he would later find out they had talked to his coach at Southern Methodist the day before the draft.

In his excitement over getting drafted, the rookie dropped some colorful language twice in a televised interview. And even though he dropped more language in this interview recounting his draft day experience, swearing is something he’s trying to stop doing since that infamous interview.

“I’ve caught myself for the most part,” said LeRibeus. “The ‘Sugar Honey Ice Tea’ word comes out now and then. I try to refrain from the f-bomb. I catch myself with the f-bomb almost every time now.”

You can read the rest of it here:

I'd really love to hear your feedback on this one.

I really liked this article. You definitely further humanized him, and I do love that you threw that "Don't quote me on that" -esque line in there.

Please keep doing these. It's nice to know the players outside of sound bites!

Thanks. This is definitely something we plan on doing more of in the future.

I really appreciate it.

Good writeup, very natural feel to the article and to LeRib. Seems very genuine, no airs or affectations, and that will make the kid more coachable in the long run. We'll have to see how he pans out on the field, but in terms of a draft prospect he validates the approach taken by the FO even more.

Great piece - thanks! This kid has Hog written all over him.

He definitely feels like a throwback player. He's not politically correct. He's not overly concerned with how other people see him. He's just a goofy guy who loves to have fun off the field and bulldoze opponents on it. I wouldn't lump him with the Hogs before he even plays an actual NFL snap, but he definitely has the potential to be a fan favorite with his "This is who I am. Deal with it" mindset.

Good piont, and I'm not saying he plays like one (yet) - just reminds me of how they carried themselves. I'd like to see more NFL players like that.

After RG3, I think the interview I'd most like to do with a Redskins player would be LeRibeus.

Great job, well done J.

He was definitely fun to talk to. And there's a much greater potential for f-bombs with him than there is for Griffin. Sadly, less Subway commercials though.

Pity, it'd be a helluva commercial, LeRib just bulldozing all the hurdles, "MY EATING!"

How about a little love for the big guy LeRibeus coming in for his first NFL experience tonight after Lich went down. The rookie stepped in and the running game didn't miss a beat!

I didn't even realize this! Awesome to hear! Hope he continues to get better and helps us out.

Yeah, he really came in there seamlessly today. I wanted to grab him in the locker room to talk about it, but unfortunately he was out of there before I had a chance.

I thought the run game looked better with him in instead of Lichtensteiger. I haven't re-watched the game but I'd be interested if anyone knows the yards per carry before/after LeRibeus entrance

First play in he pancaked a guy, second play he got to the second level and ensured a big gain for Alf. Looked pretty dang solid.

He really did look good. My eyes were fixed on him when Lich came out. He looked like a true road-grader on that second play. Well done, rook!!!!
