What is and what it means to be “WOKE”!

It is and was for “Black” (hate this word) people to wake up to what is happening to themselves and know who they are.

History:

The Jamaican philosopher Marcus Garvey, exhorting members of the Black diaspora in America, Jamaica, and elsewhere to join the cause of Pan-Africanism, called on them to “Wake Up!”

….The use of the word “woke” continued to spread throughout all sectors of Black Americans’ lives. In 1940, after finding out they were being paid less than their white counterparts, the leader of a Black mine workers union in West Virginia that launched a strike against discriminatory pay reportedly said, according to Harriot’s research, “We were asleep”…..

….Woke almost certainly also showed up in the everyday conversations of Black people from the South, Midwest, and the East Coast, including in Harlem. The New York City neighborhood has historically been a Black mecca, and it’s where Kelley first heard the word “woke” being used in the context of the Black Power movement…

…However, Watson believes it was Erika Badu’s use of the phrase on Twitter while advocating for the freedom of Russian feminist protestors that ultimately helped propel woke around the globe…

…."To some, woke is now a derisive stand-in for diversity, inclusion, empathy and, yes, Blackness. So, when legislators pass a law to “stop woke” in light of the word’s true history as well as its commonly understood meaning, what are they really saying?"

The use of the word reached mainstream vernacular when the Black Lives Matter movement used the hashtag #staywoke following the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri by police in 2014.

Kelley argued that because Black Americans know their language is constantly being appropriated, the language itself is constantly changing. “By the time these terms get into the mainstream,” he observed, “new ones have already appeared.

"Woke" is a word that has been coopted by certain aspects of the right wing to refer (negatively) to the general societal push towards equality and inclusion of traditionally marginalized people, including but not exclusive to black people.  The right uses it as a term of derision towards anything they view as unfavorable to white christian preeminence...and male and straight and other characteristics they deem to be "better."

Just curious and I mean no offense, but what word would you like to be called if not black? All the descriptors get confusing to me, not just the black community, but people as a whole. One person hates something and the next person prefers it.

i would think most people believe the term woke originated with black people, but unfortunately, it is now a term used by the righty whities to express outrage for anything that isn’t the white christian right.

Don’t exclude the generalization of the term by the left though.

Note: using the term to make people aware of the treatment of the activists rock band **** Riot in Russia started the course of broad application. Again in this case, it wasn’t about activism as much as it was about mistreatment.

I personally don’t like the terms black or white because they are vague racist descriptors. From a cultural standpoint, maybe so, but then what is white culture?

I haven’t heard the term woke used unironically by a lefty in years.

Heard it last week on a CNN panel.

I guess if people say poopyhead when it comes to self determination….. we will get laws against poopyheadness.

I’m white and I have no idea what white culture is. Ugh….. maybe motorcycles and AC/DC or pickup trucks and Toby Keith?  Not my thing though.

getting ready to do what, down the Rhine. But yes, it’s 99% white

I mean, go on an AMERICAN cruise.  IE, a gigantic vessel that carries 4,000+ white midwesterners, all of whom go on a cruise every year and none of whom ever see the ocean outside of that one week per year.  Said vessel will have unlimited soda, a casino, and will serve lobster exactly one time.
