George Santos threatens to quit Congress if GOP works with Dems on speaker deal: reports

Embattled Rep. George Santos, the New York Republican who is currently under indictment for alleged fraud, reportedly threatened Saturday to resign from his position if Republicans reach a deal with Democrats to elect a speaker of the House.

Santos has been a supporter of Jim Jordan as speaker, and admitted he felt spurned by the earlier GOP nominee, Steve Scalise, who Santos said never called him to jockey for the congressman's support in a vote.

After Scalise dropped out of the race, Jordan became the nominee, but there are serious doubts as to whether he can unite the conference in such a way that he gets the necessary votes for becoming speaker.

On Saturday, Santos reportedly took his position a step beyond what he's previously proclaimed. Despite resisting calls to resign based on his indictment (and superseding indictment), Santos apparently offered his resignation in exchange for a mere compromise.

Sounds like a good reason for the GOP to work with democrats.  Not that I believe Santos would keep his word on that...

It’s going to be absolutely awful if Jordan gets it. The guy is a certified ass and does not want any part in bipartisan legislation.

I wonder how the sexual molested feel about seeing this piece of crap in our government. Can’t be good and I’m sure they feel betrayed everytime his name comes up.

Also, Wagner, being a team player is not all it’s cracked up to be. We should only have one team in our government. Team United States of America. If you look at it differently and you view a radical like Jordan as part of your team and not America, then you are part of the problem.

Ann Wagner exemplifies exactly what is wrong with Congress. It's all a continuation of Newt Gingrichs zero sum politics, conspiracy theories, pettiness, and generally being a ****ty human. Breaking the system was his goal and unfortunately he succeeded.

Keeping the government open he promises? Okay. Definitely will be a November shutdown if Jordan gets elected.

My feeling is that if we see Speaker Gym, we see:

Government shutdown.

Impeachment vote.

Probably federal law restricting abortion.

Yanking funding for Ukraine. (Using Israel as the excuse.)

Wouldn't be surprised if they try to defund the police unless they get an end to all prosecution of any Presidential candidate (unless he's named Biden).

Watch, the government will come to a halt if Jordan comes in and demands that no negotiations happen until abortion are outlawed.

But, it’s all good he gets paid. We already know he doesn’t care about human rights.

republicans like Jordan and Teletubbyville are going to do their best to handicap this country and make it easier to be attacked.

We will not be prepared and it will be all Bidens fault just like his summer unrest of 2020? You know that was all “Bidens America” at the time.

Speaker fight: Jim Jordan wins over some GOP skeptics https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/16/politics/house-speaker-fight-jim-jordan/index.html

Quote

On Sunday, a senior Republican House member told CNN he believes there are still roughly 40 “no” votes, noting he’d spoken to 20 members willing to block Jordan’s path to the floor in a potential roll-call vote Tuesday. But another GOP source familiar with the matter said Jordan has had positive conversations with members, and believes by Tuesday evening he will be elected speaker.

As a series of one-time Jordan holdouts announced Monday they were now backing Jordan, an ally helping whip votes told CNN Jordan believes he is within “striking distance” of having the votes to secure the gavel.

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas predicted there were fewer than 10 holdouts that remained on Monday. “We are somewhere south of 10 who are still being recalcitrant,” Roy said on the Erick Erickson Radio Show Monday morning.

I think if Roy says there are fewer than 10, then the number is probably in the 20+ range still, and he's hoping those hard-no votes don't really talk to each other.
