Russian Invasion of Ukraine

Given the tech embargo, the corruption by officials skimming off the top, and the collapse of the economy, I really doubt they have much of a stockpile of these. They will shoot their wad here to look badass, but ultimately it will only be a few hits. Most of Russia's weaponry is no better than Saddam's was in the Gulf War, whereas we are giving Ukrainians high tech, albeit purely defensive, weapons.

Ukraine claims that Russia can't build or repair tanks any more because Western sanctions deprived it of components

Ukrainian officials claimed on Monday that Russia is unable to repair ts tanks or make new ones because of the impact of international sanctions.

A Facebook post by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said that work had halted at two Russian factories "due to the lack of receipts of foreign-made components." Insider was unable to verify the claim.

The two companies, Uralzavod Corporation and Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant, "specialize in the manufacture and repair of tanks and other armored vehicles for the needs of the armed forces of the Russian Federation," the Ukrainian post said.

The state-owned Uralzavod is Russia's sole military tank manufacturer, according to the European Union. The bloc announced sanctions against a raft of Russian entities, including the company, on March 15. The modern T-72B3 tank produced there has been deployed in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the bloc said.

Russian Nobel laureate donates medal to Ukrainian refugees

Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov, a co-winner of last year’s Nobel Peace Prize and the editor of the independent Novaya Gazeta newspaper, plans to donate his prestigious medal to raise funds for Ukrainian refugees.

“Novaya Gazeta and I have decided to donate the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Medal to the Ukrainian Refugee Fund,” Muratov wrote in the paper on Tuesday. “There are already over 10 million refugees. I ask the auction houses to respond and put up for auction this world-famous award.”

Ukrainian military capture lieutenant colonel of Russian army

The 128th Separate Mountain Assault Zakarpattia Brigade captured a high-ranking staff officer of Russia’s 58th Combined Arms Army.

"During the battle with the Russian army, the members of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade captured the head of the information and psychological counteraction group of the 47084th military unit of the Russian army," the Brigade's fighters posted on Facebook.

As noted, immediately after Koshel had been captured, the Russians deployed significant forces trying to free him. In particular, they raised aircraft that fired on Ukrainian servicemen.

"Nobody was injured in the enemy fire. The captive was taken to a safe place in the rear," said the soldiers of the 128th Brigade.

Ukrainian forces explain the desperate attempts of the enemy to free the captive by the fact that Koshel had maintained a direct contact with Mikhail Zusko, commander of the 58th Combined Arms Army of the Russian Federation, to whom he had made daily reports personally.

Anonymous Takes Anti-Putin Battle To Russian People With Printer Attack To Disrupt Kremlin's Propaganda

Ever since declaring war against Russian President Vladimir Putin, Anonymous, the decentralized international activist and hacktivist collective, has continued to relentlessly hit the Kremlin with attacks that are undermining the country's leadership and disrupting its narrative on the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. The latest is a printer hack, which allows the collective to send a message across the transcontinental country.

The details of the latest attack against Russia were shared by Anonymous on the micro-blogging site Twitter. "We have been printing anti-propaganda and tor installation instructions to printers all over #Russia for 2 hours, and printed 100,000+ copies so far. 15 people working on this op as we speak," the tweet read.

International Business Times had the opportunity to talk to one of the hacktivists and they confirmed the hack. They also explained that the operation included PDFs printed on the hacked printers with a message telling Russians that its president, Kremlin and Russian media have lied to them.

The hacktivist collective also helped recipients install tor, access "real media" and get around Russian censorship. The Onion Router or simply tor is free, open-source software that allows anonymous communication.

"We hacked printers all across Russia and printed this PDF explaining that Putin/Kremlin/Russian media is lying and then we instructed how to install tor and get around their censorship to access real media," one of the members, who goes by the Twitter handle @DepaixPorteur told IBT.

As Russia moves to nationalize foreign companies exiting its market, the UK prepares to nationalize a major Russian natural-gas supplier

The UK government is preparing to temporarily nationalize the Russian natural-gas giant Gazprom's British retail supply unit, as it is in danger of collapsing and causing supply disruption, the Financial Times and Bloomberg reported on Monday.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia could seize and nationalize the assets of foreign companies leaving the country.

A move by the UK government to put Gazprom Marketing & Trading Retail under special administration appears designed to save the company as its customers abandon it over the war in Ukraine, the Financial Times reported. Sources told Bloomberg on Monday that many major natural-gas traders had instructed staff not to deal with Gazprom's trading arm.

The CEO of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, is sanctioned by the UK government. Gazprom itself doesn't face restrictions.

Gazprom Marketing & Trading Retail — which supplies natural gas to about 30,000 UK business customers, or about 20% of the country's companies — has been trying to find a buyer for the business, The Times of London reported on Sunday. But a person close to the company told the Financial Times that it "would be difficult" to reach a deal.

If Gazprom Marketing & Trading Retail were to collapse, the UK government could find another supplier to take over its client base or nationalize the company, with taxpayers providing the funds to keep it running, the Financial Times reported. Its clients in the UK include McDonald's, Siemens, and the National Health Service, according to the BBC.

So thinking about how this will eventually conclude… it seems like Ukraine can hold its own for some time, and Russia is determined to achieve its “goals” in Ukraine and it doesn’t look like there is enough descent within Russia to stop Putin outright… and both sides are also saying talks are slow but progressing better than they were previously…

I think a possible compromise is that Russia installed a puppet government in the cities east of  a line from Kharkiv to Kherson and Ukraine agrees not to join nato and in return Ukraines government remains in place and Russia promises not to attack or move further west.

If that happens how long do you think before the world lifts sanctions on Russia?
