Will Ron Rivera's job be in jeopardy after the 2022 season?

A lot of people seem to be expecting this without either a new QB or a really great season Rivera will be on the hot seat after this year.

I personally don't think this is likely at all.  It feels like so many fans are living back at the beginning of Snyder's tenure, where we had four coaches in five years; Norv, Marty, Spurrier with Terry Robiskie having a short interim run.  Since then Gibbs has gottern four years, Shanny has gotten four years, Gruden got five and change.  Only Jim Zorn and interim coach Bill Callahan have gotten less than four years.  I don't see Rivera breaking that trend.  And considering Gruden got five plus, I can buy Rivera getting to draft a QB in 2023 if no better options happen for us and Riverboat Ron having two more years

I agree that people look too much at Snyders first decade as owner in predicting what he will do with Rivera. Gruden wouldn't have lasted 5 years under the Snyder of the 00s. That said, after the first 4-12 season (which came after Shannys 3-13, and I think it was more a case of Shanny quitting than anything), Jay did have at around .500 the next four seasons before the terrible start to 2019 really left Dan with no choice. We should be competitive with Ron, but if we plummet to 5-12 or worse in 2022, all bets can be off.

I think Rivera gets at least 2022 and 2023 seasons -- even if the team signs a bridge QB for the 2022 season and had to draft their anticipated "franchise" QB in the 2023 draft.

Frankly Rivera's team will be adequately competitive in 2022, and it doesn't seem likely the team would have some 3-14 meltdown that would heat up Ron's seat for the 2023 season.  But by the end of 2023, Ron will need to have the team showing it has all the pieces in place to get into the playoffs in the 2024 season.

Not that the organizations are comparable, but look at Doug Pederson in Philly. Dude wins a SB his second season, then has a couple of just over .500 seasons (but both playoffs), before the bottom falls out in 2020 and he's gone.

I think the poor reputation Dan and Jerry got for axing coaches in the 00s has made them a bit gunshy about doing the same now.

If he goes from 7 wins, to 7 wins and then 7 wins or less next year - you have to consider it.  Basically three straight years of not improving should absolutely be considered for removing him. He has full control. Its his team. We need to see improvement.

last year was seven wins with a harder schedule though

Will?  Don't know. Do know it COULD.

  1. Year three is the critical juncture. All coaches who got 3+ years with non-expansion teams and failed to produce at least a playoff contender by year 3  (save 2) have never produced more than a mediocre team. Even one of those that did succeed only got one SB even though he arguably had one of the best QBs of all time.
  2. All Washington coaches who swept the Giants in a non-playoff year had a bad ending with the team. OK, Pardee was pretty much already gone when he did it and Rivera is only one of two guys who got to the play-in game at least despite getting swept by them (of course, Gibbs got all the way to the NFCCG).
  3. Dan Snyder either goes away and we have new ownership or doesn't and continues to be Dan Snyder.
  4. Zac Taylor was on the hot-seat earlier this year and is off now for obvious reasons. Belichick was on the the hot-seat at NE as late as November 2001.
  5. Sean McVay is a former Redskins assistant. Took over a 4-12 franchise with nothing to a SB in year two. He did it without a franchise QB made obvious with his later actions.
  6. Kyle Shanahan did it in year 3, another former assistant here. He looks to have done it without a QB he truly considers franchise.
  7. Zac Taylor took a team that hadn't had a winning record since 2015 to the SB in year 2. This period of losses included 3 straight 10+ loss years.
  8. Bruce Arians took his team to the dance in year 2.
  9. Raiders made the play-ins despite a CF going on in the front office.

A decent season, even if it is really just luck (if your honest, you would agree that we were just 5 plays out of the play-in game this season), gives him another year. Take the team into the playoffs (not just the play-ins) and he probably could even get another suck year the next.

What else does the NFL stand for besides National Football League?  It also stands for NOT FOR LONG.  No coach in the league except for maybe Bill Belichick and Andy Reid can be presumed as safe if they happen to have a bad season, or show no signs of major team improvement.

Next year is Rivera’s 3rd season coaching this team.  We’ve won 7 games both seasons, and won a fluke division title in the process.  Unless this team upgrades the QB Position in a major way next year by drafting a QB or trading for a big time veteran QB, Ron’s job status shouldn’t be a slam dunk either way.  He botched the QB situation big time last year by not drafting a QB.  That would’ve bought him at least 2 more seasons minimum.  Now he’s operating from a mindset of panic and urgency to get his QB.

If Ron busts on improving the QB situation this offseason, you’re damn right his job status should be in jeopardy.  We’re a mediocre 7-8 win team at the moment without one.  All the bottom feeder teams that used to occupy space with us are now winning playoff games and getting to conference championships (Cincinnati, Cleveland, Buffalo etc).  Pretty soon we’ll have the longest streak w/o a playoff win and a conference championship , unless we get the QB situation rectified.  Nothing else matters until then.

why do you think he will be held to different standards to Gibbs, Shannahan and Gruden?

Ron didn't botch the QB situation last year (2021). He was going off what our D could do and wanted a vet to lead the team. He was also not expecting Fitz to get hurt after 6 snaps. That is not a botch.

The first year of Ron he couldn't go QB because he had to babysit Dan's son pick in Haskins.

If it takes Ron 4 years to find the perfect QB then extend him another 5 years.

Gibbs got to the Playoffs two out of his four seasons here.  He retired, but could’ve coached a lot longer if he wanted.  Shanahan also lasted 4 season, but he drafted his QB (2 of them actually), which gave him a longer leash.  No idea why Gruden lasted as long as he did.  He should’ve been fired after the home loss to the Giants that kept us out of the playoffs.

No coach wanted to come here while Bruce was still in charge. That is why Gruden lasted longer.

The fact that he settled for a mediocre 38 year old QB, who had never taken a team to the playoffs in his 17 seasons, after NOT drafting a QB in a class that was MUCH better than the QB class this year is a serious red flag.  That is a botch.  I know they tried to trade for Stafford and struck out, but that shouldn’t have led to signing Fitzpatrick as the next best option.  That makes no sense quite frankly.  If you were going to sign Fitzpatrick, it should’ve been as a bridge QB for the rookie they should’ve drafted last year.  Why they didn’t draft a QB, I’ll never know.  Now they have to draft a QB from an underwhelming draft class, where there is no clear QB1 out of the bunch.  The 6th QB taken in last year’s draft (Davis Mills), might be better than the 1st QB taken in this year’s draft.

He didn't go QB in the draft because he wanted a vet. At the time Fitz was the better vet that he could get. Now if he had traded up to get Mac Jones last year that would have been nice but again he wanted a vet to lead the team since we were a QB away from going to the playoffs again based on the results from the previous year.

Once we struck out on Stafford, our next move should have been to move up in the draft. Our QB room in August should have been Heinecke, Allen and the pick. The signing of Fitz would not be out of the question anyway.

Ron represents much more than the typical head coach for most franchises. He is here to do much more than win games. Besides, I think the team will be good this year and become a contender in the NFC...my answer is "no", his job will not be in jeopardy. JDR...that's another story.

By that logic, Gibbs shouldve been fired after his 5-11 mark in 2006. But reality is that Joe was unfireable based on what he did for this team from 81-92.
